Dumbo. I love the song "Baby Mine" as well as the song at the beginning when the storks bring all the babies.

Was pretty good. I just got it in the mail from the DMC and had never seen it before. I was a little distracted during watching it so I'll have to sit down and watch it again sometime. I'm excited to get through all the bonus features!

I watched 2 widescreen Disney DVDs on a new widescreen TV!
Howdy!
Last Friday, I watched my Beauty and the Beast DVD and my family's Love Bug DVD on my family's brand-new Toshiba 26 inch widescreen (tube) TV. The player used was a Toshiba DVD/VCR combo with HDMI output (sorry, I used the yellow video cord for viewing, though I would like to bring back the component video; probably on my next visit), a photo card reader, etc. I am amazed at how anamorphic widescreen DVDs look on a widescreen television - AWESOME! NO ANNOYING BARS! And BTW, I was visiting my family, but not for the TV, though I do love it! There's BBE Digital, which sorta provides 5.1 like sound through the speakers. I was amazed at how BatB sounds through that television! I have yet to play that musical challenge game on disc 2 on that TV, but only for the sound as it's 5.1...
The TV (Late Sep. 2005) and DVD/VCR (Late Jul. 2005) were purchased from Best Buy. I got the BatB DVD in March 2003 at Sam Goody (now closed in favor of iTunes and all that stuff), and the LB DVD in June 2003 at Best Buy (funny thing, the day before Buddy Hackett died!).
I was able to stay up all through 2 A.M. for those movies, thanks to my TexaSize Coca-Cola from the Dairy Queen!

Pocahontas - Truely an underrated masterpiece. While it has many faults and a few story issues, this movie is interesting, mature and quite different in story from what we're used to get from Disney (tragic ending and all that). I really hope that the new 10th Anniversary Edition [which is leaps and bounds better than the theatrical release, I might add] will put this movie in a more positive light.

Cinderella, in my second time today; and probably today was the first time I watched it.
Now I must say that I understand what Luke said of the movie. I understand the movie is very charming, the characters and makes for a movie you can watch endlessly.
But there are certain things here that makes you think if Disney actually put that much effort into it:
1) the lack of interesting songs/music
2)the very boring backgrounds. The movie looks very empty; as an example, look at the ultimatedisney logo on top of the page.
3) there are very important scenes that you'd think need more attention: when Cinderella enters the casltle feels very lacking of importance, how come when the prince sees Cinderella she's just there in an empty black space?, when Cinderella is dancing with the prince: very boring and filled with darkness.
4) I don't think the mice scenes were too much. I believe that they used them in order to attract and interest boys into the film; the same way the dwarfs were used in SW. What I do believe is that certain scenes are too long and end up being not that funny.
5) I would have added more scenes with Lady Tremaine and her daughters but not that much. I mean, LT is already cruel enough as to have too much of her in the movie. But they needed more screen time.
PS
The movie in general is not that great. I believe the reasons of how popular it is are: going back to the Disney classics, the story itself, the scenes that stay with you and how much merchandising Disney has put into Cinderella herself.

On Tuesday, when Cinderella came to DVD, my friend Katie bought the disc and we watched Cinderella, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and Sleeping Beauty. We only had the VHS version of Snow White... available to us (she only owns the VHS; my DVD is at home), and we also opted to watch Sleeping Beauty on VHS just for kicks, even though I have my DVD here. We got a good laugh out of the fullscreen crop that neither of us had seen in a while. ("Look! They're dancing, and you can't see Prince Phillip's head!")

Last night Kram and I watched Cindy. We did a side-by-side comparison of our old 1987 VHS and the new 2005 DVD, and strangely, we found the VHS more...warm than the DVD. Sure the colors are darker (and correct in some parts) and the audio has a lot of noise. But comparing it to the cold new version, the VHS has a more personal feel to it.
Anyone notice the following:
In the VHS, the first scene with the King and the Grand Duke, GD is wearing blue. On the DVD, it leans more towards green/teal. However, everywhere else in the film he's wearing blue.
In the VHS, the horse (does he have a name?) appears gray or flesh-toned in some parts, though on the DVD, he's always a dull gray.
In the VHS, several of the dancing sequences are in a soft blue. On the DVD, it again leans towards green/teal.
Lady Tremaine was kickass in both versions, though.

Cinderella's Altered Colors
I finally watched Cinderella on DVD, and I noticed quite a few changes. You are right, Escapay, the colors in this movie seem wrong, and too different from the VHS. Cinderella's hair is too bright, a part of the fairy godmother's dress is the wrong color for some scenes, some sparkles in Cinderella's dress transformation are missing, and I figured out that they must've recolored some parts, because some of the outlines of the characters are either partly colored over or have vanished. Basically, I can see that Disney recolored some animation because they didn't color in the lines! This Cinderella is altered.Escapay wrote:Last night Kram and I watched Cindy. I didn't notice this change, but I can tell you that the horse's name is Major.Escapay wrote:In the VHS, the horse (does he have a name?) appears gray or flesh-toned in some parts, though on the DVD, he's always a dull gray.Escapay
By the way, where is Kram Nebuer? He hasn't posted in a while.

Cinderella; despite the lack of effort into the movie itself, I can see why it is so popular. Is a very charming movie.
...and as said before it makes for repeated viewings.
Sleeping Beauty; now I get to see why isn't as popular as other Disney movies. If you compare it to Cinderella the setting in general is very dark and as established in the review, you can't relate to Aurora at all (especially in comparison to Cinderella).
Plus... the way the whole movie is portrayed, it maybe a "little girl" story but the tone is very Black Cauldron; aka a "boy's movie".
And there are quite so many parts in this movie that don't move the plot one bit and what gets filled in is by no means interesting/entertaining.
PS
I just noticed an "homage" to the actress that plays both Lady Tremain and Maleficent in SB.
If you remember in Cinderella, when Lady Tremaine finds out that Cinderella is the one the prince is looking for, there's a close up to her face and everything goes black except her green eyes. Well, the exact same thing happens when Maleficent shows up before Aurora in Sleeping Beauty.

Re: Cinderella's Altered Colors
I wonder if they really recoloured some parts or that is the way it looked on the screen when it first premiered. I don't know for sure since I haven't read much about the restoration of Cinderella yet but I'm reminded of the animated version of 'How the Grinch Stole Christmas'...Disney Duster wrote:I finally watched Cinderella on DVD, and I noticed quite a few changes. For years most of our generation and ones previously grew up watching this on television and The Grinch was green but the quality wasn't too great so when it was restored for the DVD the colour of the Grinch was restored and he was yellow-ish... some didn't like that even if he was supposed to be that way.

Cinderella...watched parts of it.
Evil Genie Jafar, I'm happy you do at least find Cinderella charming and rewatchable. I understand all the faults you have with the movie, even though I find the Lucider scenes to be quite funny. I love that cat.
I recently watched the "Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo" part and the ending of Cinderella(starting where Lady Tremaine wakes up her duaghters) and the part where Cinderella pulls the shoe out of her pocket and the stepmother reacts made me shudder, as it sometimes does. I think in my second watching I was a tad more used to the restoration, so I enjoyed the movie better. I also watched some of the second disc for Cinderella, and found the menus on it much better than the first disc's menus. But the music is still bad!
As for the restoration of the movie's recoloring, thanks for the information orestes, but I can see that Disney recolored it because they colored over some of the outlines of the animation. I will try to post pictures some day, comparing the restored version to the unrestored version...
And Escapay, I still want to know what happened to Kram Nebuer.
