DVD Recomendations Please

Check Hollywood Video or other rental places for Snow White, Beauty and the Beast, and Sleeping Beauty. I found Snow White and B&TB at Hollywood brand new a few months ago, just took some calling around. B&TB was 19.99 and Snow White was around 24.99.

I would get as many Pixar films as you could, There is also a new Toy Story DVD coming out later in the year.

Ok, well many of us have already recommended:
Alice in Wonderland
Pocahontas

Those are "animated classics" and I consider Mary Poppins a Disney live action classic.

How many DVDs were you planning on getting?

I think I will just limit the amount of DVD's I'm getting to about 5 or 6

Here are a few things of which I would recommend which are currently available in the UK (your profile says so, I believe) and are good DVDs;

Mary Poppins: 40th Anniversary Edition The movie is undoubtedly a classic, and the bonus features are equally amazing. Also available for cheap prices in the Woolworths summer sale for around £10, I believe.

Pocahontas: Special Edition Although a bit of a cheesy film in places, it's still a good one and with an extended version of the film and wonderful bonus features, it's a great buy and like Poppins, it's in a few of the summer sales.

Sleeping Beauty: Collector's Edition The UK 2 disc edition has actually gone out of print recently, however you may be able to find it in some of the high street retailers which charge the full price (HMV, Virgin etc), which although is pricey, is still worth it as to see the film in widescreen glory (unlike the wretched pan and scan single disc edition in the UK, see the OAR page on this site for more info on why widescreen is better) along with lots of goodies. If you still can't find it, this online retailer has it for even less.

The Rescuers Down Under The movie is good yet I must say that the disc is actually fairly craptacular. Sadly, it's unlikely to get a reissue and with it being £7.99 at the moment on www.play.com, it's well worth a purchase, unlike the £15 to 20 one would pay normally.

The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh Although a 1 disc edition, it's still got a lot of nice bonus features and the movie is cute.

Freaky Friday Ditto what I wrote for Pooh.

Any 2 disc edition of a Pixar film Nuff said!

If you have a multi-region player (like myself), I'd also think about getting Alice in Wonderland and Dumbo from Region 1 (USA or Canada). The Region 1 DVDs are pretty good, but the Region 2 equivalents are terrible, with lots of bonus material missing. If you really want these movies and don't have a multi-region player, then possibly go the Region 2 versions. If your player is multi-region, however, go for the Region 1 versions!

What is the Black Cauldren about? Is it any good? I was looking at the Disney DVD's in WHSmith and I saw it, and I've never watched it before but it looks quite good, not very Disney style but y'know

I've heard that the Black Cauldron is the worst Disney movie ever made.

I watched it myself about a month ago, and I disagree with the above statement..It's okay, but I was expecting it to be way worse than it sounded.

I don't know if I would recommend that you buy it..you should rent it though. It's good enough to watch.

Now Oliver and Company..that's the worst Disney movie!

Well, today, about 2 hours ago I bought Pocahontas DVD, I havent watched it yet but I chose it over Alice in wonderland... mistake?

Depends if you prefer old school or new. Both films are good, not great but still both are classics in my opinion.

Yes and no. Yes because I (of course) find Alice to be a better film, plus it'll go out of print way before Pocahontas will, but no because Pocahontas is still an excellent film and is a better DVD than Alice. As long as you plan on picking up Alice sometime soon, all is well.

You have to pick up Alice in Wonderland too because it might go out of print soon.

Should pick up Alice first because like the others said, it'll be the first of the two to go out of print. Aren't they the same price?

BOTH, however, are extremely great films!
