Well for me I own all the Disney Animated Classics except Cinderella. I do hope for more future 2 Disc DVD treatments. I have friends that don't even buy one disc Disney DVDs.

Hey you have a big DVD collection. I'm also a member on DVD spots.

As far as the smoking thing goes, I think that it should be changed, smoking is bad for your health and it has been proven that it causes cancer.

What is the big deal if they changed that?

I checked my Video Disc and early VHS and those scenes have not been edited. And only my DVD seems to be missing that little bit which is not enough to spoil it for me. From what I read, most of you have never even seen "Melody Time" much less had it on DVD or VHS, or whatever form.

To really show my age, I even have to this day the 8mm silent film of the Pecos Bill segment from "Melody Time". It is in black and white and has not been altered.

If you are holding out for undedited releases, I would say that is a pretty lame excuse for not owning the title. They probably will never take out the smoking alterations of any of the early films.

By the way, on the Mickey Mouse Treasures Collection Black and White Vol. 1, the scenes of Peg Leg Pete rolling his smokes is still there. So it seems that there is someone playing favorites here. Also I have never seen the Goofy smoking scene in Saludos Amigos.

That is so true Peg Leg Pete does smoke. Then why can't Goofy smoke maybe cause he's a hero and Peg Leg Pete is a villian.

I guess because London people like to smoke.
It also could be because 101 Dalmatians is a classic.

dvdjunkie, your statement about collectors vs. likers hardly holds any ground. Most of the people responding to this thread are under 30, they obviously do not have the same size budget you would have to buy DVDs. Just because they choose not to or can't afford to buy every single Disney DVD you find worth collecting does not make them a "Disney Liker". It's like with Star Wars...you can be a die-hard fanatic and dress up like a Jedi on your way to work, or you can be one of those average run-of-the-mill peeps who enjoys watching the movies. You don't need to be a FANATIC to be a fan.
dvdjunkie wrote:And those of you who say you don't get it because you think that it is edited, or you are waiting for a two-disc set are just not true Disney collectors at all.
What exactly is a "true" collector then? Perhaps they go by a "quality over quantity" method. I don't need to have 500 DVDs to be considered a collector. I buy what I like, the quality of the movie itself, not whether or not I have enough to be able to brag "Look at the size of my...DVD collection!"
dvdjunkie wrote:To the best of my knowledge, having been a projectionist for over 30 years, I can tell you that "Melody Time" is not edited for DVD. Yes, it was edited for VHS, but the DVD version is the complete theatrical version. Make Mine Music is actually an extended version on DVD and there are no edits. There are additions, yes, but no edits.
I don't know what versions of Melody Time and Make Mine Music you have, but the R1 version of Melody Time is edited...

From UD's own review, the first is an R1 screencap, and second is the unedited R2 screencap.

And perhaps you think MMM is "extended" because you haven't seen Martins and the Coys and saw it for the first time on the DVD?

Do you even bother reading any reviews on this site? Better version does not necessarily mean "remake". Disney's Gold Collection was a little-more-than-barebones with passable audio/video quality. I'd think a "collector" like you would want to have the highest quality in audio, video, and supplements for DVDs. If people here are passing on mediocre releases hoping for better versions, then let them. Lord knows how long I'll be waiting for two-disc versions of Robin Hood and The Black Cauldron, two of my favorite DAC's.

Anyway...DAC's I deliberately not own...well, I can't deliberately not own anything can I? Cause to own something would mean to have it, and to deliberately not own it would mean to not have it, and since there are many I don't own yet, I deliberately don't own any not in my DVD list in my siggy.

It's not that it's not PC, it's that it is rude, arrogant, and immature.

I've been deliberately holding out on:

Saludos Amigos
Melody Time
Make Mine Music

. . . because as already mentioned here in this thread, they've been edited, and as I've said elsewhere on this forum, I don't want to be in support those edits.

There's a handful of others that I'm hoping for 2-disc sets of (or at least some kind of special edition).

Robin Hood: Really nostalgic for me and probably my boyfriend's favorite Disney movie. Our VHS does just fine for now.

Hercules- Wasn't impressed with the bonus features of the DVD, so I'm waiting for an inevitable special edition or whatever. Again, the VHS is good enough for now.

101 Dalmatians; Had the chance to buy this on DVD, but didn't want to pay the ridiculous SRP for an early Disney disc with the glaring lack of bonus features. That VHS is tiding me over.

The Jungle Book- Same reason as 101 Dalmatians.

The Aristocats- Probably my least favorite of the Disney classics; an ok movie but not one of those I *have* to won. I'll get it if a nice edition comes out, though.

The Rescuers/The Rescuers Down Under- Would make a nice box set, don't you think? I prefer the latter of the two but would like to own a nice edition of both.

The Sword in the Stone- I have it taped off of Disney Channel from like 1986. Would love to get it on DVD but, once again, I'm hoping for a better edition.

Saludos Amigos: Didn't like it
Aristocats: I DESPISE this movie!
Black Cauldron: When did it even come out???? lol
Oliver and Company: Never knew it was Disney
Great Mouse Detective: Meh.
Pocohantas: The beginning of Disney's decline in my opinion
Hunchback: HATED IT!
Hercules: Mediocre at BEST
Mulan: One word: MuShu (or however you spell it)
Fantasia 2000: Never saw it
Brother Bear: Didn't like it. Knew how it was going to end before it ever came out.
Home on the Range: Never saw, don't plan on it

and any of the Cheapquels..... except Stitch the movie, because Stitch owns you.

I want them all but the animated classics I don't own are...

Fantasia - I can't find a cheap version of it offline anymore. I should have got it when I had the chance.

Cinderella - Do I have to explain why? :P

Peter Pan - Missed the boat. I have to wait for the next version which may be a while.

101 Dalmations - Waiting for the PE. (this and Cinderella are the only two animated classics NOT available where I am living now)

The Jungle Book - Waiting for the PE.

The Little Mermaid - Waiting for the PE.

Beauty & the Beast - Missed it but I want it badly. It's now #1 on my list of Disney movies I want that are already out on DVD.

Tarzan - Waited too long. It's #2 on my want list.

Lilo & Stitch - Waiting for the SE. If it doesn't get announced officially soon I'll end up purchasing the edition already out!

Well that's it. I purchased any of the edited animation classics just because I don't want to get old and grey before they re-release them. At the time of purchase I couldn't see a re-release date anytime in the near future.

I am not trying to stir anything up, but people who get picky about these "minor" edits are the same kind of people, in my opinion, who look for things in Disney movies like:

The dust clouds in "The Lion King" that spell "S - E - X"

The rolling and tumbling of Simba which people say ends up in a sexual position.

The fact that Jessica Rabbit is wearing no underwear.

I have always wondered about people who look for reasons not to enjoy movies, whether they are Disney or non-Disney movies. Why can't they just sit back with some popcorn, or the snack of their choice, and watch. Movies are supposed to be entertainment and not some sort of art form that we are supposed to judge as good, bad, or ugly. Walt Disney created the animated film as a form of family entertainment and I think he would be turning in his grave if he knew how we have come to pick apart his movies because of some "powers that be" that think we will be insulted if they show a person smoking, or doing something that seems unnatural. He didn't create "Song of the South" to be a racist film, but look what the NAACP has done with it. He didn't create "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" to make fun of 'little people', and I am sure that he would be very insulted to think that we can't just watch a movie for what it is - entertainment!!!

Enough of my rant, and I apologize to those who aren't as open-minded to our films as I am.

Those people need to get a life!!
