What Animated Classics do you deliberately not own? Why?

Post by littlefuzzy »

I have held off getting the following:
  • The "Package Features"
  • Saludos Amigos - edited, and I want something better than the Gold Collection.
  • The Three Caballeros - I'd like to see a better version.
  • Make Mine Music - edited, and I want something better than the Gold Collection.
  • Fun and Fancy Free - I'd like to see a better version, although this one may be one of the better Gold Collection titles.
  • Melody Time - edited, and I want something better than the Gold Collection.
  • The Adventures of Ichabod & Mr. Toad - I'd like to see a better version, but I may get this version.
    Other titles:
  • Cinderella - October isn't here yet, so I can't buy the collector's set! :P
  • The Sword in the Stone - I should probably get this.
  • The Aristocats - I'd like to see a better version.
  • Robin Hood - I'd like to see a better version.
  • The Rescuers - I'd like to see a better version.
  • The Fox and the Hound - Non-OAR? and I'd like to see a better version.
  • The Black Cauldron - I'd like to see a better version, that is Anamorphic.
  • Oliver & Company - this sounds like a decent disc, and I will probably get it.
  • The Rescuers Down Under - I'd like to see a better version.
  • The Lion King - I still need to track this down (preferably the collector's set.)
  • The Hunchback of Notre Dame - Where is the mysterious 2-disc version, or the missing Laserdisc extras?
  • Hercules - I'd like to see a better version, that is Anamorphic.
  • Lilo & Stitch - Where is the 2-disc version??
  • Treasure Planet - Frankly, I feel this is one of the worst Disney films... If I find it for cheap, or a 2-disc comes out, I may get it.
  • Home on the Range - See Treasure Planet, above...
I have the Limited Issue versions of Pinocchio, Lady & the Tramp, 101 Dalmations, The Jungle Book, and The Little Mermaid, but I plan to sell them and get the Platinum releases.

My collection is very small because I just started in October of last year. A lot of my answers are going to be the same. Here are the ones I don't have:

Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs: I missed out on it.
Pinocchio: I'm waiting for the Platinum.
Fantasia: I'm waiting to see if the Platinum is better than the Anthology.
Dumbo: I didn't really like it very much.
Bambi: I didn't really like it very much.
Cinderella: I didn't really like it very much.
Peter Pan: I'm waiting for the Platinum.
Lady and the Tramp: I'll need to see it again to remember if I like it or not.
Sleeping Beauty: I'll need to see it again to remember if I like it or not.
101 Dalmatians: I'll need to see it again to remember if I like it or not.
The Sword in the Stone: I'll need to see it again to remember if I like it or not.
The Jungle Book: I'm waiting for the Platinum.
The Aristocats: I'm waiting for a better version.
Robin Hood: I've never seen it.
The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh: The special edition's good, but I'm waiting for about a year to see if a 2-disc is announced.
The Rescuers: I've never seen it.
The Fox and the Hound: I'll need to see it again to remember if I like it or not.
The Black Cauldron: I've never seen it.
The Great Mouse Detective: I've never seen it.
Oliver & Company: I'm waiting for a better version.
The Little Mermaid: I'm waiting for the Platinum.
The Rescuers Down Under: I've never seen it.
Beauty & the Beast: I missed out on it.
The Hunchback of Notre Dame: I'm waiting for a better version.
Hercules: I'm waiting for a better version.
Tarzan: I'm waiting for the special edition.
Fantasia 2000: I've never seen it.
Lilo & Stitch: I'm waiting for the special edition.
Home on the Range: I didn't like it very much.

I deliberately avoid any title that isn't a 2-Disc set unless it's a new release (Treasure Planet, Home on the Range). I don't want to take the risk of buying something that I'll end up double dipping on later. Therefore, my animated classics collection is mostly made up of 2-disc SE's. The only single discs I have are Fun and Fancy Free, Peter Pan: Special Edition, The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, Lilo & Stitch (which will hopefully be upgraded soon), Treasure Planet, and Home on the Range.

Yea, that's kind of the same reasoning with us. :)
Except when the movie isn't out or announced for a 2-Disc, we end up buying it (i.e: Robin Hood). I hate double dipping. :( It's a waste of time and money and it usually means I end up being nice and just give the DVD to a relative or something (i.e.: xXx [wait, that's not Disney. ;)])

Pinocchio
Dumbo
Peter Pan
Lady and the Tramp
101 Dalmatians
The Jungle Book
The Little Mermaid
The Hunchback of Notre Dame
Hercules
Tarzan
Lilo & Stitch

...Because they are all going to get 2-Disc rereleases, and most probably sooner than later.

You could also maybe add the two Fantasias to that list. For a long time, I didn't have them just because I haven't been able to get my hands on them, but now I might avoid them and wait to see if/how they get Platinum-ized.

Beauty and the Beast, Snow White - Missed them... :(
Hercules, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Lilo and Stitch - Likely to get 2 disc sets.
Oliver and Co, Aristocats, Robin Hood, Fox and the Hound - Likely to get new transfers and extras if a sequel is to be made for them.
Jungle Book, Peter Pan, 101 Dalmatians, Cinderella, Lady and the Tramp, Little Mermaid, Pinocchio, Fantasia (+2000) - Plaitnum Editions are in the works.
Package features + Home on the Range - Last on my priority list, and they're expensive as any other classic so I don't bother with them.
The Black Couldron, The Great Mouse Detective - Will be blind buys so I'm hesitant about buying these for now. No store has 'em for rent either! :(
Treasure Planet, Rescuers/Down Under, Winnie the Pooh - Plan on getting this soon.

The only ones that I deliberately don't own at the moment are the ones that I'm not a massive fan of that and may become a 2 discer in the near future (Hercules, The Hunchback of Notre Dame) or the ones that either I cannot stand (Treasure Planet ). In the unlikely event that I own all the other animated classics, however, I would be willing to pick up the ones that I don't like.

My Brother's family has all the Disney classics on VHS, so I don't have any of them!

However, I do want to get Alice in Wonder, Robin Hood, and both Fantasias for myself. I've seen AIN and Fantasia 2005 at used DVD stores downtown, so I might pick them up the next time I have the cash.

The only thing I'm really disapointed in not having is the Silly Symphonies Disney Treasures set. I didn't buy it because I didn't realise that some of my favorite B&W shorts were actually Disney. :(

I only have The Lion King, Lilo and Stitch (which I don't even like that much), and Aladdin...

Beauty and the Beast is my favorite Disney film, I should have gotten it when I had the chance. :( I also might pick up Mulan and Alice... Maybe Bambi.

Saludos Animgos--Not much of a anything at all, just bores me
Alice in Wonderland--One of my least favorites, one that I can just live without
Robin Hood--Poor, recycyled animation a la Hanna-Barbera
The Black Cauldron--Nearly unwatchable attempt to create a serious film aimed at young adults
Oliver and Company--Don't like the whole premise.
Also, anything after The Lion King I do not like enough to buy myself a copy on DVD.

The reason my collection isn't complete is pretty much for the same reason as Pasta. I started too late.

Snow White: Missed it, but I'm going to purchase it online later. Let's hope I don't get a bootleg. I have it on VHS.
Pinocchio: Missed it, but I'm going to purchase it online later. Let's hope I don't get a bootleg. I have it on VHS.
Fantasia: I do not collect Disney cartoons
Saludos Amigos: I do not collect Disney cartoons
The Three Caballeros: I do not collect Disney cartoons
Make Mine Music: I do not collect Disney cartoons
Fun and Fancy Free: I do not collect Disney cartoons
Melody Time: I do not collect Disney cartoons
Cinderella: I'm going to pre-order the Collector's Edition from amazon.com in August-ish. I have it on VHS.
Lady and the Tramp: I have to call amazon.com and switch in my crappy bootleg for a real (or at least a bootleg that LOOKS real and plays properly) copy.
101 Dalmatians: Missed it, but I'm going to purchase it online later. Let's hope I don't get a bootleg. I have it on VHS.
The Aristocats: Once I get the money, I'll buy it on dvd. Right now I only have it on VHS.
The Fox and the Hound: Once I get the money, I'll buy it on dvd. Right now I only have it on VHS.
The Black Cauldron: Bad movie
The Great Mouse Detective: Not so good movie...but it was decent.
Oliver & Company: Terrible movie!
The Hunchback of Notre Dame: Once I get the money, I'll buy it on dvd.
Hercules: Bad movie
Tarzan: Not so good movie..but it was decent.
The Emperor's New Groove: Once I get the money, I'll buy it on dvd.
Fantasia 2000: I do not collect Disney cartoons
Lilo and Stitch: Bad movie
Atlantis: Not so good movie..but it was decent.
Treasure Planet: Once I get the money, I'll buy it on dvd.
Brother Bear: Not so good movie..but it was decent.
Home on the Range: Bad movie

I think there are 2 or 3 more cartoon-type dvds that I don't own that I forgot to put on this list.

Perhaps they mean they are animated features to them, but rather a collection of animated shorts. Though Fantasia is offcially considered a feature I believe.

I'm suprised they aren't idiots for not wanting them

Pinocchio: I missed out on this, but I do want the Platinum version
Fantasia: I didn't have enough money and I reallly liked the 3 disc set. I have both on video though.
Dumbo: Escapay has one and they're still in stores but I remember reading about a 2-disc 65th anniversary edition
Bambi: Escapay has it, I want it, he's letting me hold on to it for now
Saludos Amigos: Not sure if I want it or not
The Three Caballeros: Not sure if I want it or not
Make Mine Music: I have the VHS and I like it but not enough for the DVD that's out now
Fun & Fancy Free: I need to find one with a reasonable price rather than the SRP
Melody Time: I need to find one with a reasonable price rather than the SRP
Cinderella: It's only July :)
101 Dalmations: I have the original VHS, I can wait for the Platinum
The Jungle Book: Good gravy I haven't seen this yet! I need it!!!!!!!
The Arisocats: I need to find one with a reasonable price rather than the SRP
Robin Hood: I need to find one with a reasonable price rather than the SRP
The Many Adventures Of Winnie The Pooh: Not sure if I want it or not. Escapay might get it...
The Rescuers: I haven't seen all of this yet but I'd like a DVD but maybe I'll wait for something better
Fox & The Hound: Good gravy I can't seen this one either! All my friends who arent Disney freaks have seen it but I haven't. I need the DVD!!!!
The Black Cauldron: I have the GC VHS but I hope they make a better DVD. There's a lot of history to this movie and I want some features about it!
The Great Mouse Detective: I need to find one with a reasonable price rather than the SRP. If I win the latest screencap contest I won't have to worry :) .
Oliver & Company: Haven't seen the whole thing yet. Not too excited to, but I'd like the DVD.
The Little Mermaid: It's still 2005... :)
The Rescuers Down Under: I need to find one with a reasonable price rather than the SRP
Hercules: I need to find one with a reasonable price rather than the SRP or wait for a better edition.
Tarzan: YAY! Special Edition October 18, 2005 but it is still July...
Fantasia 2000: Have the VHS, I need to find one!!!!
The Emperor's New Groove: I need to find one with a reasonable price rather than the SRP
Treasure Planet: I need to find one with a reasonable price rather than the SRP. My cousin has a copy.

Luckily I started collecting when Snow White was released so I already have whatever wasn't listed though I'd double dip for:

The Adventures Of Ichabod & Mr. Toad
Peter Pan
Lady & The Tramp
Sleeping Beauty
The Sword In The Stone
The Hunchback Of Notre Dame
Atlantis: The Lost Empire: I wish I got the 2-disc Collectors Edition rather than the 1-disc
Lilo & Stitch: Heavens to Betsy, when is the 2-disc coming????

I really think that most of the excuses listed by each title are pretty lame. Either you are a Disney collector or you are just a Disney liker. You need to get off the fence.

Brownie needs to define cartoon and animation a little better. All animation is a sort of cartoon, cartoons are really animation. You need to explain what you mean a little better.

And those of you who say you don't get it because you think that it is edited, or you are waiting for a two-disc set are just not true Disney collectors at all. To the best of my knowledge, having been a projectionist for over 30 years, I can tell you that "Melody Time" is not edited for DVD. Yes, it was edited for VHS, but the DVD version is the complete theatrical version. Make Mine Music is actually an extended version on DVD and there are no edits. There are additions, yes, but no edits.

Not all Disney movies will be given the two-disc treatment. And if you missed it the first time around, it may not come around for some time. And what do you mean waiting for a better version. You want them to remake all of these classics?? I don't think so.

And Robin Hood is as far from Hanna-Barbera animation as you can get. That seems to be a not very well thought statement.

I will not buy any direct-to-DVD movies of Disney. If they aren't good enough for the theater, then they aren't good enough for my collection. Why do they insist on making sequels? Why do they not put them in theaters before coming to DVD? G-rated animation is already hard to find nowadays in the theater.......most of the animated films that are coming out are PG-13. C'mon Disney, give us the sequels in the theater first.
