1. The Hunchback of Notre Dame
2. Beauty and the Beast
3. The Lion King
4. Pocahontas
5. Hercules
6. The Little Mermaid
7. Aladdin
8. Mulan
This list of how I would rank the musicals is very different from how i would rank these films normally. Even though HUnchback is my No 1 classic and No 1 musical too, Mulan is in my top 3 films however it's probably the weakest in terms of music.

from that list provided...here's my rank:
1.) Beauty and the Beast
2.) The Lion King
3.) Aladdin
4.) The Hunchback of Notre Dame
5.) The Little Mermaid
6.) Mulan
7.) Hercules
8.) Pocahontas
yea, and if Mary Poppins was a choice, I'd list it up there too! Julie Andrews and Dick van Dyke were a great singing duo.

I was wondering about that. I agree that Mulan's not the strongest in terms of music, but I do think that three of its four songs are masterpieces. "Girl worth fighting for" is the exception.ichabod wrote:Nope not just youDisneyFan 2000 wrote:^Why? It's just so spine-chilling! Or is that just me?

True. It was around this time that Disney started phasing out the musical, I think. Tarzan only had the "background songs", and Lilo and Stitch, Emperor's New Groove, Treasure Planet, and Atlantis didn't have any. Only Brother Bear and Home on the Range had any. I do think it's a reason that the modern Disney movies were less popular. I mean, each of the ones we're listing here has at least one really memorable song that became a pop culture phenomenon.ichabod wrote:I admit it does have some brilliany songs, but would you really call it a musical? The songs are more sort of incidental like with Bambi or Brother Bear etc. It's not like Hunchback or BatB which really is influenced by the music, and the music is a very important part of the film.

5. The Little Mermaid
6. Pocahontas
7. Mulan
8. The Hunchback of Notre Dame(None of the songs stuck in my head, they were ponderous and unpleasant, and only the Hellfire song was memorable at all, IMO)

I have to agree! The songs were awful! The gargoyle songs were cheesy and the rest of the songs were long and boring. And Hellfire was the only good song because Frollo was the only good character.Raydawggie wrote: 8. True the Latin ones were forgettable because well, they were in Latin! If we all did understand Latin, I don't think most ppl would be singing those songs since they're mostly chucrch hymns (Lamb of God, You take away the sins of the world...etc).Timon/Pumba fan wrote:I have to agree! Though I thought "Out There" (Quasi's version) and "God Help the Outcasts" had great melodies and were very poetic. Both characters were basically crying out their feelings and letting loose their strong emotions. I can't believe ppl thought they were boring.

The point is, the characters sing and dance and the songs further the plot and the emotions of the characters, thereby constituting it a musical.ichabod wrote:I admit it does have some brilliany songs, but would you really call it a musical? You can't even compare Mulan to Bambi or Brother Bear because the songs aren't sung by the characters. Two completely different forms of movies we're talking about here.
Let's not forget that this is rank the Disney musicals and not soundtracks. Story and film quality are just as much indicators of a good musical just as much as the musical itself.

Apparently, MovieMusicals.net does not think the Walt Disney era and pre-1980s musicals are not musicals or is only counting the musicals form the Little Mermaid to Mulan (1989 - 1998) or what many consider to be the "Golden Age" or "Second Golden Age". Hopefully it is the latter. Maybe we already had a rate all the Disney musicals thread?Nala wrote:Then why is Pinoccio not in the group, since the characters do some singing.

There are more musicals than those 8. Not only Mary Poppins is missing from the listKram Nebuer wrote:Apparently, MovieMusicals.net does not think the Walt Disney era and pre-1980s musicals are not musicals or is only counting the musicals form the Little Mermaid to Mulan (1989 - 1998) or what many consider to be the "Golden Age" or "Second Golden Age". There are live action and animated classics missing from pre-Walt and pre-1980's and post-1998.
