First day sales of Bambi: Platinum Edition!

So what kind of indication is this for the amount it will eventually sell? Im not an expert on dvd sales

I think that's because even tough Aladdin was great at the time, The Lion King surpassed it and people eventually forgot about it.

Sadly now, history repeats itself. The Lion King came first, Aladdin later (people just forgot about it) and now Bambi. And people buy Bambi more for 2 main reasons: adults now remember it as children and people who didn't know about the movie before still fell for the name (that's always remembered).

Actually, like EGJ, I think people were saving their money to buy The Lion King because they heard it was going out of print. So there was a rush to buy ALL THREE before it headed to the vault, rather than buying Aladdin or its sequels.

I mean, it's pretty obvious right? People would just rather buy the soon to be OOP, than what was just released.

And now that Bambi is out, which is considered to be a CLASSIC, Aladdin is just forgotten...

Aladdin is magical, but not as powerful as TLK or Bambi!

*sigh, oh well; I still like my Aladdin Gift Set + Sequels!

How did Mulan do? I forget if I have read how well it did. I know more people who bought Mulan than any other Disney DVD recently. Everyone I know pretty much has a copy and in my house we have two... one of my sisters and myself.

I think I remember hearing that they were slightly displeased with Mulan as well, but not so much as Aladdin.

Please don't misunderstand... that doesn't mean that Aladdin didn't sell well! It just means that sales numbers fellow below Disney's expectations, which I would imagine were just underneath that of TLK. Therefore, Aladdin could have sold more than Mulan and still have been more disappointing.

The general opinion is 60% of sales on a DVD are made in the first week. There's various reasons for this: the desire of people to get films when they are "hot", opening day sale prices, store shelf space etc.

Now this is mainly for the latest modern movies. I don't think the "hot" factor will be that big an issue for Bambi, and family films do have longer legs than other films.

Perhaps in Bambi's case, the first week sales (not day) will be more like 20%-40% of the total sales, rather than 60%.

interesting, let's hope Bambi has long legs wich will lead to big sales. When all platinums are released and all is said and done it will be interesting to base the top10 on sales and see wich one sold the most and wich the least. But that's still far far away. My bet is on Little Mermaid to be BIG. For now, good to see Bambi (wich I've heard lots of people respond to with "I'll pass") selling good.

I have the numbers somewhere for Disney's %s of home video sales (how much gets sold and when; how Disney compares to others and DVDs in general, etc.). We had to learn them all in training, but I forget a lot of them now. I'll try to hunt them up a little later.

I find with most Disney movies you have to get them ASAP. Sometimes they hang around for a while but now it's even hard to find 'Brother Bear' and 'Home on the Range' seems to becoming rare. Plus some places love to raise their prices high pretty fast. At one store 'Mulan' wa already going for $40 by January.
Some places the Disney DVDs are very slim picking and you can't find much of anything except the newest release and one or two stragglers.

Yeah that's bad to me. I still haven't picked that one. I know it's not one you like.

I like it but it's certainly in my bottom 10 picks if I had a bottom 10 list.

I find that two of the three Wal-Marts in my area have on okay selection but one has a great selection.

The greatest selection I ever saw was way up north in Ontario at an independent store. It had everything, even one or two out of print like Fantasia.

Sorta off topic but anywho.. I love this movie to but what allways got me is the bi pollar'ness of the movie... it goes from being so totally dramatic to super happy... maybe thats there way of taking kids minds off the depressing parts?

I think Bambi shows a great lesson for life to everyone...

and have you noticed that this release has caused more fuzz on this forum than Aladdin or even the Lion King???

We're dicussing the DVD itself, its sales, its characters, and many aspects of the movie... wow... It's all worth it!!!

Here is an article from Movieweb, concerning Bambi: Platinum Edition.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the remastered animated classic Bambi was the nation's top-selling DVD and VHS last week and the remake of the actioner The Flight of the Phoenix was the top-renting home video during the same frame, according to Nielsen VideoScan and Home Media Retailing magazine, respectively.

The Walt Disney classic Bambi sold an estimated 1 million combined DVD and VHS units during its first day in release March 2nd, according to the studio's video distribution arm, Buena Vista Home Entertainmen. BVHE declined to say how many Bambi home video units were sold to consumers during the film's first week in release, but industry sources believe it sold more than 3 million combined DVD and VHS units.

Huzzah! I actually went to Target right after my 8am class that ended at 10am on March 1st to get my copy.

Nearly ran through the store... but, instead, decided to powerwalk to the DVD aisle.

A mother was pushing her toddler in a cart and when she picked up the dvd the kid yelled out, "BAMBI!" It was SO cute. I was thinking, "Spread the Classic Disney love!" Hehe.

I'm so glad that Bambi's doing well! o^^o

Not that I was thinking it wouldn't do well or anything. The amount of people at Best Buy buying the DVD were plenty and not to mention Bambi's a much-loved classic. I also saw a lot omre commercials for Bambi on TV than I think I did for any other Platinum title so yeh, I woulda been bummed if it had been doing poorly.
