I want to see the storyboards and rough animation for "Part of Your World." I also wanna see the video conference of Glen Keane explaining what makes Ariel. . . well, Ariel. Oh, and an interview of Glen Keane (kinda like what they did in Beauty and the Beast with the transformation sequence) is a definate requirement.
Hmm. . . something tells me I'm partial to the works of Glen Kean!
I also expect the usual commentary track and lots of deleted songs (more than what the Aladdin DVD gave us) with matching storyboards if available.

I'm partial to the creations of Andreas Deja (who did King Triton in this film, I believe) myself. ^-^
Those extras you listed are fabulous. I'd love to see a storyboard and rough animation for "Part of Your World" (a very emotional and touching piece)! Glen Keane in particular is so good at conveying character emotions even when his rough animation looks its... well, roughest.
And a fantaaaastic commentary track with 2 seperate commentaries from The Little Mermaid's filmmakers and animators (like in the Aladdin PE would be ace. And the usual (but practically necessary) making ofs, vocal talent pieces, early promo reels, and whatnot.

Here is a track listing for disc one of "The Music Behind the Magic," with lots of Little Mermaid rarities (demos and work tapes). Somehow I was remembering more deleted songs other than "Silence is Golden," but it's been ages since I've actually listened to this CD.

2. Fathoms Below [Final] - Howard Ashman
3. Main Titles [Final] - Howard Ashman
4. Fanfare [Final] - Howard Ashman

28. Eric to the Rescue [Final] - Howard Ashman
29. Part of Your World/Happy Ending [Work Tape/Final] - Howard Ashman
Something else of interest is that one of the other versions of Part of Your World has some alternate lyrics:
". . . now there's a dream
now there's a goal
now there's a need I'll never control
I won't get free
till I can be
part of your world. . ."
". . . I'd give my life
I'd sell my soul
cuz I can feel I'll never be whole
but I can see
I'll never be
part of your world"

It sounds like "Silent is Golden" is more of an earlier version of "Poor Unfortunate Souls" and not a cut song. Am I correct?
No problem.
And yeah, it pretty much is an early version of "Poor Unfortunate Souls." Some of it survived into the final version, but the song itself is a lot different. I haven't listened to it in a long time, but I think the lyrics go something like this:
Silence
Silence is golden, my dear
Up above they chatter
so what does it matter
if you become mute?
(Nobody likes a loudmouth)
I mean it
Silence
silence is golden, my dear
Don't you think you should try it
they'll say she's so quiet
so shy and so cute
Well, take it or leave it
that's all
that's the bargain
go on
take a stand
make a choice
remember you'll get the legs
and the lungs
and the prince
all I get is the voice
And you'll be silent
but silence is golden, sign here
There's no choice for you since
you're in love with a prince
but relax, I've been told
Silence is gold
(A spoken spell is cast here, very similar to the one in the film)
Now here it goes. . .
ankles and toes. . .
almost complete. . .
legs and feet
Enjoy it
deploy it
this form, yours to keep
Dear, I've done it
you're human
good luck
and breathe deep, dear
Silence is golden. . . ha ha ha ha ha
Hmm. . . now it'll be running through my head all night!
Sounds terrific! It was probably difficult to decide what version would end up in the finale version. I personally like the words of the final version a bit more. Seems more related to the story and progresses it and the characters!

I really love that line. the "sell my soul" verse should have been kept because it captures how strongly she felt about joining the human world. thank you so much for the information on the cd, im going to see if i can preview a few tracks on the net since i cant buy it. i guess it's out of print.
i really hope they restore all of this for the dvd!
Yeah, that's the original ending. And she basically does sell her soul.
Actually, even though it's out of print I think that you can buy used copies really cheap at Amazon.com these days. I happened to get mine off ebay at a pretty good price after it was out of print. It's really worth looking for, especially with all the Aladdin material. It also comes with a nice book. I'm not sure where mine is at the moment; it got lost when I moved. I know it's around here somwhere. . .

From what I remember, the older version was actually discarded before the one we're all familiar with was created. Alan Menkin had only recently rediscovered it when he was about to record a new demo. He had popped an unmarked tape into the recorder and decided to hit play to see what the heck was on it instead of immediately recording over it. I'm sure it was a real treat for him, since Howard Ashman had passed away by then.
I also prefer the final version, but this one provides a little insight into the process of developing a song. Neat stuff there. I really like the "there's not choice for you since/you're in love with a prince" line for some reason.

I've been singing this to myself all last night, and all day today! I can't get these new lyrics out of my head!!
I can't wait for this DVD either! I've yet to see TLM in it's full glory. I've only see a poor-quality cropped version of it. 2006 actually doesn't seem too far away, really. Since we have a great line up of DVDs for this year. Bambi, Pocahontas, Incredibles, Cinderella, Lilo and Stitch. I love Disney movies!

That is very true but, no movie- even Cinderella, can take my baby's place! I know EvilGenieJafar has an idea on what I'm talking about ...
* An extensive "making of" (either branching together various video features ala Aladdin or something more straightforward ala Snow White) that has:
- Both recent and archival interviews
- Footage from the recording studio
- Live-action reference footage
- Tests
- Inspiration for the music
-Mandatory 2 Hour time or over!!!...
* Some sort of general Disney feature. Possibly a Howard Ashman-esque feature like Beauty and the Beast's, but longer...
* Storyboard to Film Comparison...
* Song Demos...
* Deleted Scenes and Songs
* Extensive Galleries
- Concept Art
- Character Design
- Layouts and Backgrounds
- Ad Campaign
- Theme Parks
*Muliple Trailers and TV Spots
Here are things I'd also love to see:
*A music video featuring Olivia Newton John's cover of "Part of Your World" (From the WDW 25th Anniversary album) they could do it like they did with Barbara Streisand for Snow White
*The First episode of the Little Mermaid TV series The one featuring Spot the Killer Whale, it had an awesome song in it called "Just A Little Love"
*A Howard Ashman Tribute
*A Feature explaining The Little Mermaid's importance to Disney Animated Features.
