I'm annoyed too, when I 'walk into' a thread about a certain film, hoping to be able to discuss the film, only to find the thread cluttered with debated over aspect ratios, colors, BluRay etc. By the way, there IS an excellent thread named 'Is Disney done with DVD?' , where these issues can be disc...

Incidentally, the "best" quality for Disney films would be just giving out copies of the original 35mm film masters (or for digital ones like Pixar and the CAPS movies - giving people a 1:1 copy of the original source). Well, in the *real* world, people don't have 35mm projectors in their...

2099net, I agree. Let's all agree to disagree about the dvd/blu ray thing. Because the funny thing is, years ago I had the same discussion over and over again, with people who said the laserdisc would be the new format because it was superior to vhs. I said that the general audience just wasn't int...

Re: Pinocchio: Platinum Edition

Thank you Disney Duster. You hit the nail on it's head. It's very true what you say about the softness, blending of things, colors, shadows, brush strokes and textures, that's just gone.... And yes, it's mostly about the older films. To reiterate, with emphasis: Loss of detail on DVD releases is a ...

Re: Pinocchio: Platinum Edition

Also, some video critics have noted that brush strokes and other elements of the hand-painted and inked artwork are often flattened out into smooth blocks of color on DVDs. This could be getting rid of the textures or even a blended looks intended by the original artists. I even read that Snow Whit...

Look at the Blade Runner box set. The Final Cut was color timed differently, but every other cut was left alone, color wise. So you'd still have the original version. I don't know why other directors and artists still aren't able to do this. You've supplied your own answer by citing Blade Runner as...

Which is precisely why Disney has never shot a feature on any format larger than 8mm film.

When DVD was released you didn't have to worry if discs would not play, and players bought in the late 90s can still play new DVDs. That's inaccurate: compatibility issues and firmware upgrades have definitely been a part of DVD's history. (I've personally owned 2 players bought in the past 6 years...

Animated films, whether hand-drawn or CGI, just aren't edited in the traditional sense...which makes the choice especially remarkable.

When I was in first grade the teacher stood the class in a line against the wall and whispered a "secret" to a student at one end of the line with instructions to "pass it on" in the same manner. The results were illuminating. I haven't thought about that exercise since I was in ...

He [Spielberg] used the same digital restoration service as George Lucas, but yet nobody's complaining about Indiana Jones. Interesting, if completely off-topic: About this time last year I actually said out loud to my next door neighbor that there'd be an Indiana Jones boxset on Blu-ray by Christm...

No, you don't understand me. What I mean to say is "I don't care what people say the original look was/is" because we don't have real proof (although it's quite obvious). I firmly believe I know which version is closer to the OTV... Why? What's your baseline reference for the OTV: ...

I'm all about Walt. That's all you need to know about me. That, and Blu-Ray kicks ass. +1 on both counts. Mostly. I'm probably a little more generous with select post-Walt titles that I can enjoy without necessarily noticing how they suffer in comparison with Walt's work or deriding them on their o...

Without the creators there's nothing to watch and not a hint it's missing. But without an audience Disney would never have become a household name. Face it, the creators need to give respect to the public that have made them what they are. As a result they should not tamper with their films that, i...

Which is what Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise wanted, regardless of whether you like it or not. You know, I think it's rather a strange way of thinking to say the creators have the ultimate say on a film after it's already been released before. After all, the audience is the one that watched the film ...

It'll be interesting to see what Disney does with their Blu-ray/ DVD combos, will the Blu-ray and Disneyfile discs be full colour and a bland grey disc for the DVD (as the stand alone DVD will surely have just grey labels). The only bland grey discs I've ever gotten have been from Paramount, and th...

Excellent! Have Sid's "creations" been made available before? We just watched Toy Story a few days ago and I said I'd love to have a few of these...bet there'll be no spiderbaby though.
