Little Mermaid PE Cover Art in the works! (no pics, sorry)

Post by Disney 181 »

I was doing some internet searching and came accross a very interesting little tidbit. I guess an artist, Phil Barnhart, who worked on animation for promotion and advertising for The Little Mermaid has been assigned by Disney to come up with cover art for a quote "2006 release"! This is further proof and hope for us TLM fans that it will be the October release :D . It's still more than a year away but every day is a bit closer and we have Cinderella and Lady and the Tramp to keep us occupied haha. Anyway, here's his site, it's very interesting. He did A LOT of work on animated features:http://www.superstaff.com/Philo/PhiloRes.html
Here's a small glipse of the Little mermaid art that he has done (looks like it was for books and what not). I really like the style that has a lot of character but still lets it look animated, I don't think he'll let us down :) :

here's his film credit for TLM "Started as a Character Designer on The Little Mermaid and continued as a Character Key Assistant Animator throughout the film's production. Participated in the development of the characters Ursula, Sebastian and Ariel." I'll let you guys look at the rest. I got a little excited and felt the need to spoil  lol.

Nice find, RB! I think this picture in particular is really cool. It's sort of a peek at what The Wizard of Oz could've looked like if it were the first Disney animated film. I like this guy's artwork very much. He does a good job at keeping the characters on-model, even someone as difficult to draw as Snow White. I trust his Little Mermaid cover will be fantastic.

I am VERY excited with what Disney could do for cover art! I would really like them to work upon the scene where Ursula steals Ariel's voice, but hey, that's just me! :)

The Wicked Witch and Munchkins in that drawing look an awful lot like the ones seen in Ted Turner's 1992 Wizard of Oz cartoon, but it doesn’t say he worked on it... interesting.

Not just you. I always thought that scene was the most beautiful, tense and important one in the entire film. Of course, they'll probably go with something like Ariel in the PoYW (Reprise), when the wave splashes behind her. Who knows, this artist looks like he tries to be unique, so maybe we'll get something interesting for a cover. It'll probably be a while though, since we haven't even gotten Lady and the Tramp's cover yet.

So much for my hopes of the style that went on the original 1989 movie poster :( . But I doubt Disney would use any references to the kingdom of Atlantica in its advertising - there was a lot of controversy back in the day, lol. People just don't shut up about things. I think the picture of Ariel's splash from the Part of Your World Reprise would look really neat! I hope they include as many characters as possible in the art (Scuttle, Ursula, Flotsam, jetsam, Triton, Sebastian and Flounder).
I think the original movie poster has such great blend of colour and character...it's absoultely beautiful! stunning!

Even though it would be better if there were lots of great bonus materials on Disc 2, I would like to see the platinum cover with Ariel in the top left corner with her red hair swaying across the top half of the cover, with the castle and Sebastian on a rock with Flotsam and Jetsam lurking below it at the bottom half of the cover.

Random thought (a bit off topic but this isn't worth another thread). You know the scene in Poor Unfortunate Souls where Ursula shakes her, well...Front side... Do you think Disney would edit that out? I'm very worried they might!

I doubt it. And if they do, I'll be SO pissed off. The part I could see them editing is the part with the priest and his suspicious knees. Just to shut up all the spectators LOOKING for something wrong in their movies.

I'm less worried about that since a moment later you can see for certain those are indeed his knees (when Scuttle flies from above to attack Ursula).

I don´t think it`ll be edited.
Just because some sick person imagined as something else that knee, is not good reason to proceed and modify something

Well, yes, it was proved it wasn't what that person thought, but there was still plenty of controversy over it. Much more than "body language" anyway. Besides, since the comment came from the villainess, it was meant to be a negative view anyway.

I'd like to see sthing more sophisticated as a cover. The whole cover could be deep blue to pepresent the ocean and a mermaid-shaped shadow-that would be Ariel- swimming on her way to the surface. Only the light coming from the surface would let us see a little of her colours and her facial characteristics. The lettering for the title also could be silver, glowing and shiny, 3-D like.
In the bonus feauters section I'd like to see a sneak-peek of the LITTLE MERMAID 3, Interviews with Jodi Benson, 1989' trailer, Making of and so on.

Yeah, that's the one!!! Isn't it so thrilling? But I'd prefer the lettering to be silver-coloured, but 3-D like, like having silverdust in it!
By the way, what does "purdy" mean? I'm not American, so I'm not very good in English.

Purdy=Pretty

Purdy is basically the way some Country Folk ("people") would say pretty.

Very stereotypical...
