DVD Terms & Technical Things

Post by Pasta67 »

I was going to search for a thread like this, but I didn't really know exactly what to search for. I looked for about 10 pages, though, and on the main site, but found nothing, so I hope it's okay. If any of you mods feel this thread is bad or simply just stupid, I apologize and you can close it if you feel it is needed.

Here we go. I don't want to sound like an idiot, but sometimes when I'm reading a review of a DVD, I don't quite understand all of the technical terms used and I can't make an opinion of the DVD. I made this thread so that anyone who doesn't understand a specific term can come here and ask what it means. If you don't exactly understand what I'm talking about, here's a question I have that confused me:

"What is edge enhancement? I read that this was the main problem with Beauty & the Beast's DVD, and I'd like to know exactly what that term means so that I can understand what exactly the problem is."

I hope this thread can help a lot of people who aren't very familiar with this kind of stuff.

It's not a bad idea at all, but for your first question, let me refer you to Wonderlicious' thread "What is edge enhancement?", which includes my humble attempt at an answer, and deathie's comprehensive guide to The Enhanced Edge and Why It's Bad.
"Fifteen years from now, when people are talking about 3-D, they will talk about the business before 'Monsters vs. Aliens' and the business after 'Monsters vs. Aliens.' It's the line in the sand." - Greg Foster, IMAX chairman and president

Thanks, that helped a lot. I forgot to do a search for my specific question and just did a search for a thread about DVD terms in general.

Here is a great thread at DVD Talk with tons of links about DVDs, hardware, aspect ratios, etc...

Also, there is a link in that thread to the DVD FAQ:

This page also serves as a glossary for various DVD terms:
