The only musical I've gone to is The Phantom of The Opera
Twas GORGEOUS!

You're missing out! Some would say PHANTOM is one of the worst shows on Broadway right now.

Go see THE LION KING and WICKED and AVENUE Q (I have a feeling you're gonna LOVE Avenue Q!!), and SPELLING BEE and SPAMALOT!

I wish. I'm not near NY and have never been there or London so haven't had the opportunity to see anything on Broadway or West End. Therefore, I'm stuck with off-Broadway productions, soundtracks, TV specials, and DVDs.

I was in the rotten apple last month and there were so many shows I wanted to see but my girlfriends mom got us tickets to see little women. They were expensive tickets and I wanted to sell them and try and get into the new Monty Python show or The Producers or Streetcar or something but it was the night we got down and our flight had been delayed 3 hours because they couldnt get clearance at JFK so we just had enough time to drop our stuff off at the hotel, eat and head over there. I wasnt expecting it to be good, but holy shit that was by far the worst thing Ive ever seen in my life! We stayed till intermission, only because we were right in the middle of a center row and didn't want to disturb everybody but I was so restless. I kept flipping my cell phone to check the time and than I started playing rock, paper, scissors with my gf. I haven't been to that many plays, but this was by far the worst.

The only thing Broadway show I saw was The Lion King but it was at Hollywood instead of New York when I saw it.

Hey! Better than nothing. A tour is basically the same production on Broadway.

As for LITTLE WOMEN - I'm sorry you didn't enjoy it. Bad news for you - the tickets were expensive, but no other show would have been cheaper. Especially SPAMALOT. That is sold out through next year!

At least I didnt end up paying for the tickets, her parents tried to do something nice for us even though it didnt work out that way.

I saw Jesus Christ Superstar last year which was really amazing though, that's another play I wasnt expecting to enjoy and I got really into it.

I remember seeing Sunset Boulevard the last time I was in New York also and it was really good.

I also saw that Evil Dead musical last summer in Montreal and it was super fun. I was sitting next to some girl who got dressed up to go out after and she was sitting in one fo the front rows and got toally drowned in fake blood. she started shrieking and throwing a fit and everyone was laughing so hard, it was great. Nothing like cultural arts.

Anyway, I don't live in New York, but I live in the home city of Theater Under the Stars (I bet MovieMusicals.net can figure that one out

), so there's always a good amount of musicals each year here. We also get a lot of Broadway tours. I was even privileged to see the world premier of Beauty and the Beast here. This season, I'm expecting to see Wicked and The Lion King! Yes! I have only seen one show on the actual Great White Way, and that was Bombay Dreams last summer. Regardless of what people say, it was a charmer! Definately for the younger crowd. (Oh, and awallaceunc, Off-Broadway refers to shows that are in New York, but aren't being presented in one of the Broadway theaters. You must be referring to regional productions.) You're right, The Phantom of the Opera is one of the worst shows ever! It's only a big hit because tourists aren't necessarily the best judges of good theater. I'm from the Andrew-Loyyd-Webber-is-the-death-of-the-American-theater school of thought. You should have seen me last year in December when the movie came out. I was arguing tooth and nails that the movie, while pleasant to listen to, was not really a good movie.

I love theater, even though I don't go as often as I should. My city's university has a very fine theater program, and playwrights like the likes of Edward Albee teach there. It's amazing people think us down South are so unrefined...

I have seen a couple Broadway Plays in my time. Phantom of the Opera, and one other that I cannot remember the name of right now. To see a Broadway Play, is truly an awesome experience. Also there are so many great sites to see over there, like the Helen Hayes Theatre, and many other beautiful sites.

I've seen a number of shows over the years; though not in New York. Many of them come to Toronto, though, so at least I get to see them without really going far from home. I've seen Phantom of the Opera, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Beauty & the Beast and Tommy. I'm also planning to see the Lord of the Rings show that's coming to Toronto later this year, though I don't know how good it will be. I think Les Miserables is coming back to Toronto next year, so I may see that.

Yes, the are fundamentally different concepts. The idea of musical plays is erroneous because that suggests that any play could be made a musical simply by inserting song-and-dance numbers. That's not the case. When a playwright makes the decision to compose his story in the form of the play or a musical, it's just as drastic a difference as choosing between opera or ballet.

A play signifies a theatrical performance. Although it is more accurate to use the term "musical" to avoid any confusion over which performance includes singing and dancing, there is really nothing wrong in using the word "play" to describe a musical.
