Nausicaa.net has plublished an interview with the Ghibli English dub writers. Totoro, Whisper & Howl might be coming next spring. Still no word on Ocean Waves.

Interesting read. Thanks for posting the link! <i>Totoro</i>'s delay is a legal issue. That makes more sense than the 'technical problems' one, since the film isn't that old and all of BV's Ghibli transfers have looked pretty great. Dakota F. doing another voice - oh man!

I would have to say 3 things:

1) I am suprised Only Yesterday has not been started yet.

2) Hopefully Disney recieves the rights for I Can Hear the Ocean Waves and Ghiblis Episode 2.

3) I can't wait for all the Ghibli movies. Happy days!

Thanks, that was an interesting read. I loved the fact that they included all the major Ghibli films, even The Cat Returns was briefly highlighted.

Also, seems that Disney did in fact have the upper hand in a lot of the dubbing. I also love the way they praised Disney for the voice dubs.
It's true, Studio Ghibli has released some VERY magical films, with breathtaking animation and good scripts, so it's no wonder they'd team up with Disney. I'm hoping Howl's Moving Castle gets the same praise and with a better DVD release than some of the other Ghibli/Disney releases.

Disney bought the rights for I can Hear the Ocean Waves after the original deal, they said so in a press release. Nausicaa.net never updated it though.

They dont actually say its not part of the deal there. They just say there is no plans to dub it. I imagine Only Yesterday, I can Here the Ocean Waves will be packaged with a new movie somewhere down the line.

Thanks for posting that, Henski! It was quite an interesting read. Miyazaki + writing stuffs = happy me!

I've actually been curious before at the screenwriting/translating/dubbing process for the Ghibli films... it's nice to know that there's some consistancy amongst the films with the same couple working on them. I think my favorite part was about the inevitable frustration that comes with the task of smooth translation/interpretation...

We discuss what we'd like to clarify or underscore, then we start writing dialogue. We count the number of syllables available for each line, and then we write three, four, sometimes ten different options with the correct syllable count for every single line. By this point, we usually have wicked headaches, get really crabby, and start wandering around our home muttering lines in Japanese (after Totoro, we yelled Mah-tay! at each other nonstop.)

As an aside... anyone know what mah-tay means, anyway?

A quick internet search says it is a term used in Karate meaning wait.

Does that make sense in the context of the movie?

Matte is Japanese for wait. Mei always says matte when she is following Satsuki or a Totoro around.

I hope Disney didn't hold Only Yesterday back because of the female period jokes.
