Interesting Philisophical Question Concerning Disneyland.

Post by I Am Clark Kent »

I read in a book called "Legends, Lies and Cherished Myths of American History" In it the subject of parks came up.

Originally the first types of parks were established in the late 19th century. But their original purpose wasn't to keep us entertained, but to "make us behave better" Some of the first people to establish the parks actually believed that they could reform the local population by doing so. :D

The thought that they could get rid of the prostitution, drunks, and other foggies by letting them have more recreational activity in the parks. But while their intentions were well meaning, they obiviously did not come to pass.

Now when you go to a park, people do all of their drinking, lewd acts and other disgraceful behavoir in parks. And if you read an artical on the Save Disney Website, this one guy who played Moglie at Disneyland in the 1960s, he states that his favorite spot to have sex with the girl customers was Snow White's house.

That and the fact that Disneyland went up at the high point of the Cold War, when the world almost came to an end. So maybe Walt Disney had help from the government to assist in creating a theme park to make us behave better, when we obiviously couldn't tell jokes about the Russians at that time.

That's truly fascinating, Clark. I've never heard of such a theory before. And being I'm such a cynical misanthropist, I really do relish such an anecdote as this!

Well, it's common knowledge that Disney, and his studios, were "usurped" by the government during WWII in order to aid in morale by producing <strike>propaganda</strike> entertaining, educational animated shorts (:P)... so! If you're a smart, analytical monkey, you might also theorize what other kinds of ties Disney could have with the powers-that-be...

The Disneyland idea always seemed, in some weird way, a bit random to me, personally. It's claimed that building the ideal amusement park was a longtime dream of Walt's, but the sudden surge of interest in it was quite unusual. At least in my perception. I could be misinformed... or ignorant of other facts... or something. ;)

But anyhoo, I think the Cold War idea just might have some merit... I mean, I'm not putting a ton of stock in it, but I wouldn't dismiss it, either. Whether or not Disney really had wanted to build a nice, family-friendly amusement park for years... who knows how much involvement the government had in "nudging him along"?

And uh, by the way... you've piqued my curiosity. Where is this supposed article you found on Save Disney? I tried several keyword searches there, but I couldn't find it...
Life often leaves us standing bare, naked and dejected with a lost opportunity. Over the bleached bones and jumbled residues of numerous civilizations are written the pathetic words: "Too late."

Of course. We needed a Magic Kingdom with a castle to protect Sleeping Beauty from evil spells >_<

i believe some of the animators may have gotten walt interested because of their fascination with model trains rubbed off on him. also, he went through the experience of taking his daughters to amusement parks and must have figured that his type of entertainment could go hand in hand with it. he knew he could make something the whole family could enjoy instead of having bored parents watch from the benches.
