Your thoughts on Summer Magic/That Darn Cat!
Naturally I have read the reviews on the site, but would like some more comments.
Does anyone agree that Summer Magic ends too suddenly, without the story lines being tied up properly ?

I dunno if it really ends too suddenly; it's said all it has to say. The future of Nancy and "the yellow peril" is left to your imagination. I've always loved Summer Magic--just a sweet little study of an ordinary family in a small town. Has anyone ever read the book? There's another sister in the story, Kathleen, and a subplot about a brother and sister who are ignored by their father; Mrs. Carey helps him discover that his children are worthwhile to know. The girl is an artist and restores murals that were painted on the walls of the Yellow House.
That Darn Cat! is also another favorite of mine. I really appreciated that they made the kidnapping sequences serious and didn't have bumbling crooks like in The Apple Dumpling Gang, etc.

mmm, pudding...
That Darn Cat was the only Disney VHS I ever purchased, and I was anxiously awaiting a widescreen release of it. Unfortunately, Disney chose to release a full screen version, and I refuse to buy discs that aren't in the proper aspect ratio.

Well That Darn Cat is about as perfect a live action Disney comedy as they come. I love that film, it just has everything great cast, great comedy, it's actually funny! I just wish Disney had released the widescreen version instead of that Pan and Crap job of a DVD they released, which I will NOT be buying despite the fact I love the film. But wily old Ichabod has a widescreen version tapes from the TV!
As for Summer Magic, I also adore the film! However it always reminds me of the song "Merrily on Our Way to Nowhere in Particular" form the film "The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr Toad". It is merry with great plot points and songs. However like the song it doesn't seem to go anywhere. I haven't seen it in so long, until i got the new DVD, and I saw on the back of the case that it says running time of 109 mins, and as I was watching the film I looked at the clock on the DVD player and it said 107 mins and I'm thinking "Hang on! Surely it can't finish in 2 minutes?" But lo and behold "Bam" there is ends! It's weird because I have visions of a child of the guy who owns the house coming back and getting together with the mother? Or is there another film I'm getting it mixed up with!? Either way they're are both two of the (perhaps smaller, but nonetheless shiny) gems in Walt's crown!

I saw this growing up on 'The Wonderful World of Disney', but remember very little...ichabod wrote:Well That Darn Cat is about as perfect a live action Disney comedy as they come. As for your comments about the running time of Summer Magic... I totally agree as per my original comment at the beginning of this thread.. The movie just ends so suddenly.. I really like the nostaglia of the movie, but the sudden ending just kind of ruins it for me.. I wanted to see everything nicely tied up. It feels like a reel of the movie is missing !

I do prefer my DVD titles in their OAR. When a movie is released in fullscreen and I already own a VHS copy, then I don't bother about 'upgrading' to DVD.
However, when it's a movie I don't own on video, I'll most probably still buy the DVD (if a bit reluctantly).
So that's why I won't be getting "That Darn Cat".

Re: Your thoughts on Summer Magic/That Darn Cat!
I watched That Darn Cat! Such a funny film. We don't get comedies like this anymore.
I haven't seen Summer Magic.
The '60s were a great decade for cinema.

Two favorites of mine, but I confess I haven’t seen either of them in perhaps 30 years!
Farerb, are you bingeing the Hayley Mills Disney films??
Side note: I think it’s interesting that the kidnapped woman in TDC is a pre-Dark Shadows Grayson Hall who played Dr Julia Hoffman among other DS characters.

I plan on watching them eventually, but right now I'm going to watch The Young Girls of Rochefort and then perhaps some Rodgers and Hammerstein '50s films (Oklahoma!, The King and I and Carousel).carolinakid wrote: ↑Sat Feb 15, 2025 1:15 am Two favorites of mine, but I confess I haven’t seen either of them in perhaps 30 years!

I love all the Hayley Disney films as well as The Trouble with Angels.
I love all the R&H film adaptations as well. Enjoy, my friend.
