Question about CE DVDs

Post by Kayleigh02 »

First a comment - I have to say that you all know a lot about Disney DVD/videos and I have been reading these boards (through all the 'confusion' for about the last year) and finally registered b/c there have been so may times I wanted to ask a question or put in a comment - although usually if I wait a day or two someone asks & answers my question!

My question now is - In your description of release types, Luke, you mention Monsters, Inc. being the eighth and final CE, but you also mention up until you say Monsters, Inc. that the CE's were animated classics. Are these the eight that are considered the CE's : Monsters, Inc., Toy Story 1 & 2 together, A Bug's Life, Dinosaur, Tarzan, Fantasia box, Emperor's New Groove, and Atlantis? Or are there other classics that were issued? I don't see them in any of your very complete (and very helpful) lists, so I think this must be the eight.

The only reason I ask is when I bought my first Disney DVD (BnB last Oct) I figured I'd just eventually get all the classics - but now I'm hooked and as a compulsive collector I know I'll eventually end up owning all four or whatever versions of 'A Bug's Life' for no apparent reason...lol...as well as everything else animated...well that's what I thought up until I watched 'Tarzan & Jane' the other day...uhhhhg...I've seen beter on Sat morning cartoons for free...but I guess that's another topic....

Thanks for the great site, Luke, and watch out - now that I've got my first post in I plan on keeping 'em coming!

Welcome to the site, Kayleigh!

The "Different Types of Releases" section is somewhat outdated, and I don't mean for it to be. It's just that every few months, Disney seems to change everything. Even the "Special Edition" moniker they throw around doesn't mean the same thing for "The Lion King" that it does for "Peter Pan" or "20,000 Leagues" or "The Santa Clause." It's like they just WANT to confuse.

So, my write-up on release types is appropriately, confusing, too I imagine.

You've got the 8 Collector's Editions correct. Disney's printed material (the catalogue they used to include in some DVDs) had a special section with all of those. They're all pretty similar in design, too. If I do say that prior to Monsters Inc, the CEs were only the "animated classics", then I lied, because clearly Toy Story, Toy Story 2, and Dinosaur don't count as "animated classics" in the Disney feature animation sense of the phrase. Sleeping Beauty would seem to fit the design, as would Nemo, but since Disney's thrown their nomenclature to the wind, we can all be left scratching our heads trying to figure out how to categorize these things now.

Re: "Tarzan & Jane" - yeah it was pretty much a stinker. Designed like a bad animated sitcom. And what was the deal with the shadows covering up the characters? Guess something wasn't properly communicated to the foreigners who did the animation.

Anyhow, I look forward to many more posts from you! Welcome aboard! :eye: :)

Thanks for the explanation. Yeah, it is all pretty confusing - oh well...

That was the first thing I noticed when watching T&J - those shadows not moving! Like I said - Saturday morning quality! I was suprised - even though I'd seen a lot of people talking down the 'cheapquils' as I've seen them called - because I didn't think that 101 Dalmations 2 (the only other I've seen) looked that bad or had such a horrible story...

That's because Tarzan and Jane is not a sequel. It is episodes from the Saturday morning animated series, with some new 'bridging' animation.

So you were 100% right when you said Saturday Morning Quality :)

There is a proper sequel - imagnatively called Tarzan II, due in 2004.

Hey no such thing as a BAD Seinfeld clip show :D
I bought that Tarzan and Jane disc because it was on sale or something at the time.
Have watched bits of it, but didn't really do anything for me.
The Atlantis equivalent, on the other hand, I really enjoyed. I wish they had pursued that...

Hey Loomis, remember that time you posted a response to Kayleigh02 when she compared Tarzan and Jane to a Seinfeld clip episode?

It went something like this [picture fades to flashback]

:D

And that just about sums up the Tarzan and Jane invention when it transitions from episode to episode. No skill what so ever. Atlantis seemed to be better, but ultimately the bridging animation in Atlantis II was pointless too.

I would rather Disney actually released complete episodes from the television series. It would have been just as worthwhile. Don't Disney know that people on this forum are screaming for televison releases? We don't need them dressed up as movies.

It will be interesting to see how Disney release their Kim Possible DVD - like Tarzan and Jane or as complete episodes. From what I have seen of their publicity it seems to indicate episodes. I know that they are promoting it has having a never-before-seen episode, but I think the same was true with Tarzan and Jane at the time of it's release (one episode, I think the flying ace one had not been seen on television)

Could the Kim Possible DVD be marking a change of attitude at Disney (and thus meaning Season Sets of other cartoons shows could be more likely)?

Hee hee hee....you crack me up...
Just like the time when you last cracked me up.

It went something this.... [Fade to]

(Edited for time)

[Fade up]... and we laughed, and laughed until the night was through.
The gerbil never walked in a straight line ever again, though...
