What happened to Saturday Night Live?
I used to look forward to watching SNL every Saturday night, but it really sucks now. Their cast members are not funny anymore, and the skits are so cheesy. Sometimes I catch myself watching it just to see how dumb it is going to be.
I miss the old days of Chris Farely, Adam Sandler, Will Ferrell, etc. this is the cast that I grew up watching. Plus the writing was a lot better then, and the skits were actually funny.

Yeah I use to love SNL, I especially like the one with Kelsey Grammer and they were doing the 20000 Leauges under the Sea Sketch.
What's our depth?
Ummmm, 20000 leauges under the sea.
I also liked the "if it's not scottish its crap!!!" sketch when Patrick Stewart was the host.
And who could forget the Wayne's World Sketches.
Ahhh the good ol days.

The best sketches were the celebrity Jeopardy sketches.
My favorite is when Norm MacDonald plays Burt Reynolds, and he changes his name to Turd Ferguson in the middle of the sketch. That was one of the funniest sketches ever.
The other thing is that they don't really have anyone funny enought to play the presidents anymore, it's really not the same.

Ohh, I also like the sketch with the resturaunt and the guy comes up to ask for more juice and they're like "you like the juice, the juice is good yeah?" I laughted my head off on that one.
Yeah and I remember the Jeopardy sketches those were great too.
And I like that Story Time Train Station or what not and they have uniforms with letters on them.

U-Stands for unity
C-stands for caring and...
Stop!!!
Yeah Dana Carvey was the best George Bush.

I haven't seen too many shows from the '70s and early '80s (usually only the highlight clips in specials), but I thought the late '80s/early '90s was great, and the show was also quite funny with the new cast in the mid-late '90s. When Will Ferrell left, the show lost its great talent, and even 1/2 of the Good Burger clan can't save it too much. Even Chris Kattan and Jimmy Fallon provided more laughs than pretty much anyone still in the current cast, in my opinion.

I agree and the sad thing is that I didn't think that either Chris Kattan or Jimmy Fallon were all that funny.Luke wrote:I haven't seen too many shows from the '70s and early '80s (usually only the highlight clips in specials), but I thought the late '80s/early '90s was great, and the show was also quite funny with the new cast in the mid-late '90s. Except for when Chris Katton played Kippy Strug, now that was funny.

I must admit that I have not seen the last few seasons on a regular basis (the transmission of it out here being what it is), and I couldn't even tell you who was in the current cast.
However, I think it has always been hit and miss. Don't get me wrong, I love the show and the concept and the show, and some of the finest comedy on TV - or anywhere - has been on that show. But even its "inspiration" Monty Python could miss just as often as it would hit, it just so happens that when it does hit, you get something like "The Blue Oyster Cult" sketch, which will forever remain one of the greatest moments on television.
Anything involving Bill Murray was always good, but the recent stuff I've seen has been incredibly patchy.

I never really got into SNL until 2000, and by then those glory days of Sandler, Farley, and whatnot were already over. I was never a big fan of Chris Kattan so I wasn't that sad when he left.
The only reason I ever watched SNL was for Weekend Update.
Having seen only those highlight specials or old repeats at like 2 or 3 am, I don't think I'd have liked the 90s SNL. Sandler and Farley ham it up too much to make the skit funny. And they're just plain annoying.

I think it has a lot to do with your age and what you are used to. Everybody said the same when Chase, Belushi, Ackroyd and Murray left. I said the same when Murphy, Piscopo, Miller, Brown and Kazurinsky left(there I go dating myself again). Never watched it much again except when Meyres and Carvey hit their groove.
I think Saturday Night Live just had a limited shelf life for any particular viewer. Now In Living Color and SCTV never gets old for me.

Cheri Oteri + Will Ferrell...bring them back!
(of course they show the OLD SNL, but not the ones with Cheri Oteri.)

I have to agree -- not really enjoying today's SNL. I loved the late 80/90s cast.
My favorite skit is the COWBELL!! I even have a real cowbell thanks to a friend of mine.

Do you know when I noticed that this show sucks now? When they had Lindsay Lohan as a guest, and all they did the entire time, in every Goddamn sketch was talk about her boobs. That's not comedy, that's exploitation, unintelligent, and depressing. Also, on Megan Mullally's guest episode they kept constantly trying to glorify marijuana usage. I never minded the odd Jimmy Fallon and Horatio Sans skit at the college, because then they'd play "Can't Get You Out of My Head" even when Kylie Minogue wasn't the musical guest. But this was like they were on a real crusade to get all the viewers toking up. And that felt awkward and just plain, as though they were raping humor.
I somewhat agree with what you say, but the new stuff is really the worst. I have tried to like it, but it just isn't funny. I am not blaming totally on the cast, because I think that a lot of it has to do with the writing.Mr. Toad wrote:I think it has a lot to do with your age and what you are used to. HAHA, that is soooo sooo funny. I was just yelling that at work the other day. Everyone thought I was crazy. I kept picking things up and yelling "if it's not scottish, it's crrrrap!"Zoltack wrote: I also liked the "if it's not scottish its crap!!!" sketch when Patrick Stewart was the host.

SNL is at another low period. Part of it is the lack of females on the show. Maya Rudolph is the only funny female left. I'm afraid the show is going to lose Tina Fey since she's got a deal to star in an NBC comedy pilot which will proably end up just like "The Tracy Morgan Show" last season: Dead on Arrival.

I think for myself I can sum up SNL's genius with two quotes..
"I'm gumby damn'it"
&
"buckfutter"
After that.. it's controlled humor that's not funny in the slightest.
Original cast is where the real SNL humor is.. Some came along that were good.. But I don't even turn it on anymore.. why be disapointed. I can watch reruns of Johnny Bravo and get better laughs.
