Lion King DVD: all that bad?

Post by Miss Jo »

I was wondering if the Lion King PE is really as self-promotional, fluffy, and skimpy on bonus features as some people say it is. I have read extremely varied reviews on it, some saying it has everything you ever wanted to know about the movie and more, some saying it's very disappointing. TLK is such an amazing movie, I really want it on DVD, but I've heard such discouraging things and am quite upset. But it does have some good stuff, right?

Well, I think the bonus features were fine. But even if they weren't, it's worth it just for having the movie on dvd! :D

Bad enough that I didn't bother buying it. I much preferred Disney's "2-disc Collector Edition" line from a few years ago that produced such DVDs as Atlantis: The Lost Empire, Dinosaur, Tarzan, etc. Those were much better than most of the Platinum Line, which is already starting to go downhill in the area of kiddified crap-content and god-awful music videos.

I agree. I was just grateful to have it on DVD. But I dont think the features were TERRIBLE. The DVD wasnt comparable to say Aladdin or Snow White but IMO I enjoyed it more than Beauty and the Beast's features.

I really think you guys need to consider buying this DVD (It has already gone into the vault but stores still carry it on their shelves). Although the Platinums do contian corny music videos and even worse games, the movie has a great transfer, great sound, and the bonus features are enojyable to watch whether in your opinions it is or isnt enough. Get it before its too late! This movie is a classic and definetly a must-have for any Disney fan!

oh and one other thing...
TM2-Megatron : You say that the features are so bad that you didnt buy the DVD. I suggest getting or renting it and watching it for yourself before you come to your own conclusions. :)

There was a lot of footage, but it was just really poorly-organized and often promotional and not about the movie. But I can't imagine anyone not owning <i>The Lion King</i> on DVD!

I did rent it. I can wait for a better release on Blu-Ray or HVD a few years down the road.

I agree that the extras were kind of poorly organized. You pretty much need the insert to navigate around them. Then again, I don't really care too much about the extras and so on since the actual movie is my main priority. It's really worth buying if you enjoyed the film though. They transfered it really well, and the sound is amazing.

My bad. 8)

Do you think when they do release it again on Blu-Ray it will be with new features or the same thing with maybe a new cover slapped on it?

Hopefully it'll be a new release; otherwise there'd be little point in a re-release at all. By that time, I'd imagine HDTVs still wouldn't be that common. It all comes down to how cheap Disney becomes under this new management, though; many people don't seem to be holding out much hope for the company.

It will be the same DVD
Althoug they "find" evr seen before songs---and ad all the songs than were added to the Brodway musical--

Anyway, the movie it´s what it counts to have isn´t or did you see the extras on the movie theater?
the important to me is to keep what make history, and that´s the movie, not the extras

I'm probably one of the few people who don't buy a dvd for the special features. Yeah, I watch 'em once.. but the main reason for me in owning a DVD is to have the movie.

So, you can wait a few years and purchase a new line of TLK or you can get it now and decide wether or not to return it if you do not like the features. :D

I think the Lion King PE is a great DVD and well worth the money.
I usually don't even watch all those extras and I was happy with the DVD.
Even if you don't enjoy the extras atleast you'll have the movie on DVD.

Keep in mind, for most DVDs of older movies (Not the Lion King I guess, since it was presented in IMAX) Blu-ray will not offer a large benefit. You don't want Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in Blu-Ray... the quality of that film can only go so far... Unless the movie is completely re-finished with brand new cells for every scene, it's not going to look much better, if at all, on Blu-ray than the already released PE. Just something to think about. :)

And any Blu-Ray players will be able to play the older DVDs. :)

Overall, the Platinum Edition of The Lion King is a great DVD. It was the first one I picked up and I was pleased with the bonus material at the time. However, after watching the documentaries etc on some of the other 2 Disc Sets from Disney (such as Aladdin, Mary Poppins, Alice in Wonderland and Pocahontas*), the ones on The Lion King's DVD aren't quite as good.

Yet this isn't the main problem for me. The menu layout is the number one problem as it's pretty messy. There's two options; a worldwide journey of bonus features and a little menu at the bottom. The problem with the worldwide function is that it repeats a number of bonus features (such as the multi-language clip). At the same time, the little menu doesn't contain certain bonus features found on the journey, so the whole experience is a little confusing.

Needless to say, this is still a great DVD and well worth a purchase. And since it's gone out of print and is pretty much vanishing, you must pick up a copy now if you want it or you'll have to pay huge prices on E-Bay which I'm sure is what you want.

Buy it online here (I take it that you're from the USA? :?): phttp://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00003CXB4/qid=1112954314/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl74/104-2725754-2031148?v=glance&s=dvd&n=507846

*I'm from England and this has already been released here, two months before USA! 8)

I don't have this DVD, nor did I like the movie either. But to counter the people who said the movie is more important than the special features- in a way, to a certain extent, the movie with the extras as an equally important pair, is the whole justification for the 2-disc Platinum Edition. But hey, I can't pass up the chance to say... Crappy movie = shabby DVD treatment.

Well my main beef with this DVD has already been mentioned by others here. The Lion King was released on the heels of Atlantis, Snow White, The Emperor's New Groove, The Fantasia Anthology and Beuaty and the Beast and the Vault Disney collection and all out strip it by leagues! If Disney could do such a wonderous trearment for "Old Yeller" why was their most profitable film Ever given such a sub par slapped together release.

Also as has also been mentioned the navigation of disc 2 is horrendous! It is a mess you don't know what you are doing, where you are looking, the same bonus features appear more than once in different places! It is something to be ashamed of!

the only part that i am disapointed with the DVD is the missing "voice part" for the roles! the movie has such a wonderful cast but it doesn't mention at all in the DVD !
