On double-dipping cartoon shorts....

Post by Mouseketodd »

Reading various posts over time, I see that some people don't like the occurrence, or possibility of, double-dipping cartoon shorts -- which probably only occurs with the Walt Disney Treasure series.

-- Pluto's Vol. 1 had cartoons found on Front Lines and MM Treasures
-- Will future Donald Duck volumes include his cartoons found on "On the Front Lines?"
-- "Victory Vehicles" with Goofy is on both "Complete Goofy" and OTFL

Of course, people have a right to disdain double-dipping, but please consider this:

The DD volumes (Note: the notion is about the complete works, right?) wouldn't be complete if certain WWII cartoons were missing, just as the Treasure of the Disney war effort would be incomplete if Donald was left out. And, "Wise Little Hen" is in both DD Vol 1 and "Silly Symphonies." Now which theme should be denied this cartoon?

Some may not buy every Treasure because of financial reasons. So, why give up on the definitive Donald collection because one couldn't buy, or find, OTFL?

I think these stand-alone "libraries" of Mickey Mouse, of Donald Duck, of Silly Symphonies -- the list goes on -- should be kept as complete as possible.

I agree completely. They cant advertise the sets by theme or character as complete without some double dipping. And it has been limited to stuff that makes enough sense that I am not upset.

Very good points. Mind you, the Donald sets are called "The Chronological" and not "Complete". Thus, they could, theoretically, leave the WWII shorts off of the next collection and not have people screaming bloody murder because it's not "complete" like the title says. However, more than likely you will see some repetition (which doesn't bother me any because it'd be nice not having to switch discs if I want to watch say, Commando Duck and another that is not contained on the OTFL). However, I doubt you will see complete repetition (Indeed, I'd be very surprised to see Der Fuhrers Face on DD2. Instead, you'll see only a few selected ones I believe. Like I said, no problems here though.

Some "double-dipping" is quite alright. I've been "dd-ing" Disney shorts on laserdisc for several times the price of all the Treasures combined.

The thing is, with the Treasures it seemed right from the start that we were getting a serious release of the shorts with a somewhat consistent idea behind. And some of the shorts logically belong in more than one set.

The only thing I somewhat have a problem with is the Pluto collection. It doesn't seem quite in keeping with the spirit of the Treasures line that they included a seemingly random selection of Mickey shorts with Pluto appearances just to flesh out the set so much that they could make it two volumes instead of just one, which some of think they really could and should have done.

Still not a big problem, though.

As long as there isn't a huge amount, can't see it being a problem.

I take the attitude that every DVD is someone's first DVD, and not everyone has been obsessively collecting the DVDs like some of us. Especially given that all of the Treasures are OOP as soon as they go on sale (essentially), double-dipping is welcome.

And as everyone seems to have said already, it is either double-dip or have incomplete set. As some people may only choose one or two treasures, and not all, it is preferable to have all the toons in one place if possible.
