Extreme Sports Fun UK DVD Problem

Well I got my new copy of Extreme Sports Fun and watched the "Sport Goofy in Soccermania" short. The problem is all the way through the image was moving! slightly swaying from side to side throughout. Anyone else come across this problem?

It may be your TV. Sometimes, my current TV likes to move the image up and down, sometimes to the point where the TV turns itself off, period.

Well, I have the same problem with my copy, which I've finally got a week ago, but I believe it's a fault of the master copy, from which the transfer to DVD was made. Looking at this short, I get the impression that nothing was made to improve the quality of the video.

Oh, this is my first post here, but I have been following the discussions here for quite a long time. So... I'd like to say hello to everyone here!

Yes, I thought it was probably the master copy that was at fault as the rest of the DVD was fine, but I thought I'd just check anyway. It's very disappointing as I found the movement very distracting.

Ichabod, althought i haven't seen that DVD, side to side movement on a video or film presentation may indicate projector weave. (And up and down movement is called projection jitter) Sometimes equipment, is out of whack, or the error is printed permanently into the print/internegative when duped. When the Soccermania short was discused here previously it looked as it was a ntsc transfer into pal, etc.

That sounds like a synch problem, maybe something is falling out of tolerance on your equipment?

Also, this may not be related, but mmm if you watch an extremely well done transfer (no vertical video filtering) on an interlaced display or you watch interlaced video made into progressive in a progressive display by using the "Bob" method (bobs, or "merges" video lines up and down) you might see a vertical twittering or instability instead of a rock solid image but since your TV seems to be turning off by the instability looks it's like a equipment synch problem ;-P

Yup, when the Aussie edition came out back in August last year, I commented:

"Ironically, it is the most recent short – ‘Soccermania’ – that seems to have suffered the most. The picture on this particular short is ‘wobbly’, and is evidently from a problem with the source."

So I assume, then, that this IS a problem in the master source.

Believe it or not, I still have it on VHS when I taped it in 1987. I just checked it, and it does not have that problem, so it's not a problem with the master source. I also checked my Japanese laserdisc from 9 years ago, and it does have the problem. How strange that they seem to have used the same flawed transfer from 9 years ago. I just checked the Japanese NTSC DVD, and it has the same problem
