Awards for Disney Movies?
Since Finding Nemo and Pirates of the Caribbean have received both critical and commercial success, I was thinking that they might receive some award nominations. Nemo will hopefully get a Golden Globe nom for muscial/comedy picture and an oscar nom for animated movie. But do you think Pirates has any chance of getting any nominations. I would hope maybe some Oscar noms for costumes, cinematography, but I don't expect anything else. But the Golden Globes generally give other kinds of movies noms, not just the heavy dramas. My main question is what category would they put it in: comedy or drama? I think Johnny Depp deserves some sort of recognition for his outstanding performance, but the movie being sort of a mix might hurt his chances. What does everyone else think?

I doubt PotC will win any awards for costume of set design - the Acadamy is famous for overlooking all films that they don't deem 'worthy'.
However I would imagine it's in for a good chance for Special Effects - the only category they 'lower' themselves to honour 'popcorn' movies.

I haven't seen Pirates, but I think as a Bruckheimer film, it'd have a decent chance for a Sound nomination of some sort. (Assuming Disney actually submits For Your Consideration stuff...they didn't for Santa Clause 2 Makeup and they could have had an easy nomination and possible win.)
Then again, that's assuming that the Academy can remember all the way back to July when it's voting time, which is never a safe assumption.

Er. They're not English MMBMickeyMouseboy wrote:the Academy suck. bunch of old farts with no sense of humour, who just sit around in a widescreen shapped tape with blank expressions in their faces drinking tea and cucumber sandwiches.

If I was on the Academy board I'd give Johnny Depp a Best Actor award in an instant. Not for PotC as I've not seen it, but for all the other wonderful performances he's done in the past (I still can't believe he wasn't nominated for Edward Scissorhands or Ed Wood)

i havent seen Pirates of the Carribean yet since i not interested in Disney's live action movies. i'm more into animated movies. most likely Finding Nemo will win Best Animated Film and might get nominated for Best Original Screenplay and maybe Best Film
and also maybe one of the songs from Brother Bear might get nominated for Best Song.

I agree with you guys about the Academy Awards. They would never nominate a movie like Pirates for non-tecnical awards.
BUT WHAT ABOUT THE GOLDEN GLOBES. They nominate a much broader range of movies. For example I love the movie Kate and Leopold, but that is not really an Oscars sort of movie. But Hugh Jackman got a Golden Globe nom for best performance in a musical/comedy picture. I mean Legally Blonde got a nom a few years ago. If they put Pirates in the musical/comedy category, I'm hoping Johnny Depp might have a shot at a nomination.
And for those who have not seen Pirates, go see it! You are depriving yourselves of a great time.

Golden Globe people are weird they sit in this Stitch shaped table eating Veggiemite and crackers. and trying to avoid been too british and trying to avoid using Mate in their sentences. but over all their pretty funny in their weirdness and have great hearts!indianajdp wrote:Yeah, Golden Globes seem to be more of a "popular choice" award show rather than a "traditional" one. I could see that scenario playing out for a film like PotC.
