Better than Region 1 releases..?
Better than Region 1 releases..?
I'm only concerned about the animated classics when I ask this...
What international Disney DVD releases are better than the Region 1 release? And, of course, which region specifically?
Thanks!

If you're talking discs:
Pocahontas - the International single disc edition had a surprising number of supplements that are on the new 2 disc set: The making of Pocahontas (30 mins). Character design featurette. The music of Pocahontas featurette. Storyboard to film comparison. Deleted sequence. 'If I Never Knew' - deleted song. Multi language reel - 'Colors of the Wind' sung in several different languages. Follow your Heart - a destination trivia game. Of course, now the 2 disc is coming this water under the bridge.
Alice in Wonderland - Again, the single disc release had lots from the 2 disc release (and a few more than the US Gold Edition): 'All in a Golden Afternoon' sing along song. Featurette 'Operation Wonderland: The Making of Alice in Wonderland'. Alice in Wonderland still frame gallery. 'Escape from Wonderland' interactive game. 'Through The Mirror' cartoon.. I find it odd we're not getting a new 2 disc set, because the upgrade is missing the most substantial new item - One Hour in Wonderland. Again, this doesn't really matter now.
Not an Animated Classic
101 Dalmatians (Live Action) - This has some supplements not found in the US, but they are all sort of fluffy: Theatrical trailer. 'Dog Stars' featurette. 'Cruella De Vil' music video by Dr John. 'Connect The Spots' interactive game. 'The Magic Is Real' special effects featurette.

Thanks for the info... Although I have seen some of the terrific artwork from around the world, I'm only concerned about the "quality and quantity."
It is kind of disturbing that we don't all get equal quality/quantity. I hope there's a good reason some places get more (and yes, I know the USA gets the most sometimes).
And I did make a boo-boo... I realized I meant the animated classics AND any collections of the animated shorts (like the Treasures or the smaller volume releases).

This site may be of some use to you:
http://www.dvdcompare.net/
If you search for the titles of DVDs it will compare the differences between different regions. Alhtough some minor DVD titles are not included.
Also another difference, although it has nothing to do with content is that DVDs in Europe and Australia are PAL, whereas R1 DVDs are NTSC, and PAL is widely considered to be superior in terms of picture quality.

Sure the new European rerelease hah lots from the US 2 Dsic set but it was asked to say for what titles Regions 2 or 4 were better. So writting that has no point since Alice is definitely better worth buying in region 1 for the 2-Disc Masterpiece Edition release.2099net wrote:

Well that's even worse !2099net wrote:I was talking about the old UK Single Disc release and comparing it with the US single disc release.Jordan wrote: Sure the new European rerelease hah lots from the US 2 Dsic set but it was asked to say for what titles Regions 2 or 4 were better. The better set existing of Alice is the new region 1 2-Disc Masterpiece Eition which allies quality with quantity (with a terrific and gorgeous picture resotration !)
What I mean is that Alice is better to be owned in region 1 and not in any other region so its place is no in this tread.

I'm surprised that nobody mentioned Pinocchio. The restoration is much better than the U.S. DVD, and it includes 2 I'm No Fool shorts, and other extras.

I don't think Pinocchio was much better in Europe as it was in the US.. It's a weak release which deserves a much better release in the future. Hopefully in a form of a Platinum Edition (I can't think about it as anything else).mvealf wrote:I'm surprised that nobody mentioned Pinocchio. Well for a single-disc elease, the extras were fine. And that's true that the restoration was beautiful.Roklie wrote: I liked the restoration too, but the extras could've been so much better with more than trailers and other small stuff.

Hi
Yeah. France deffinately has better Artworks, and DVD Packaging. And the UK has the ultimate best DVD Menus. I absolutely love the menu on the UK DVD of One Of Our Dinosaurs Is Missing, and In Search Of The Castaways. They are very creative.

A few region 3 DVDs that I got from Taiwan have included DTS tracks that were not present in the region 1 release. The three that come to mind are: Monsters Inc., Finding Nemo and Lion King.
In the case of Monsters Inc and Finding Nemo the Taiwan version omitted the pan and scan version for a widescreen only presentation with DTS.

I would just like to point out that even though Europe and Australia and other counties occasionally get better releases, most of the time we get screwed over!singerguy04 wrote:I think they need to improve the region 1 releases, i mean we are the birthplace of the company in the first place!
A few exmples:
Sleeping Beauty - no audio commentary and a few other bonus features missing
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs - Cut down documentary. no DVD Rom stuff, missing Goddess of Spring Short
Fantasia - We do not have the remastered 60th edition of the film, outside R1 we only have the 50th anniversary edition which means no audio commentaries
Fantasia 2000 - missing commentary and no Melody short
Dinoasur - missing commentary
Alice in Wonderland (This is the killer) - Only US and Canada have a 2 disc the special edition evrywhere else only has 1 disc meaning no "One hour in Wonderland" no "alice's adventures" short and a couple of other things missing.
Dumbo - No audio commentary or Walt intros
Brother Bear - Apart from France nowhere has a 2 disc and all DVD have the p+s 1:66:1 version
Tarzan CE - No audio commentaries
The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr Toad - No Susie short
The Sword in the Stone - No "All about Magic" show
A Goofy Movie - Not one bonus feature whatsoever
The Hunchback of Notre Dame - No commentary
And there are some more too!
So even though we do win out a couple of times, most of the time we get screwed!

Although Touchstone, the UK Roger Rabbit DVD was also reduced to a 1 Discer in the same (unfair) way that Alice in Wonderland was. We've also got hardly any of the Americana Treasure sets, which is just plain mean; I'll probably never see material like Behind the Scenes and On the Front Lines. We also haven't got any Vault Disney releases. Yes, Pollyanna and the rest did get a DVD release, but had little or no extras! And then there's always the wonderfulness in customer relations that is BVHE UK. So please, look at our point of view sometimes; comments about good releases in the UK makes me laugh/cry.
Sometimes I wonder if Disney views Europe and Australia as second class citizens...
