Disney Rareties Tin: SPECULATE!
Well, personally, I have no idea what it is, but we can already eliminate several possibilities. It's not an animated feature; all of those are covered. It's probably not anything to do with Mickey, Donald, etc. because those are already released. And it's probably not a live-action feature because those generally get their own releases. So what's left? Well, I guess it'd have to be RARE, hence the title. But is it rare animation? What do they consider rare? Ben and Me? Goliath II? The Small One?
Maybe it's the long-speculated release of pre-Mickey shorts, like the Alice comedies or other extremely vintage animation. That's certainly rare.
Well that's my speculation, time for yours: All right, go for it!

SOTS
Because it would likely get its own fabulous tin set, not be hidden away in a theme set.

orestes.
I'm thinking it could be a variety of things like very old animated shorts like Alice, some Walt Disney footage not seen in decades, old trailers, clips, studio tours... anything old and rare. That's a pretty broad guess but I've only known about this set for a couple ghours so I'm still speculating.
Re: SOTS
Not necessarily. Disney's two earliest live action films, The Reluctant Dragon and Victory Through Air Power, have both only been released as part of Walt Disney Treasures tins with other content. Now, Song of the South is far more popular than either of those two. But it's pretty rare, and could conceivably be included in this fashion.Owlzindabarn wrote:Because it would likely get its own fabulous tin set, not be hidden away in a theme set.
But we'll find it, I suppose. I wonder if "Ben & Me" and "Donald in Mathmagicland" will be included. I don't think those are too rare, since they were on VHS and can be ordered on DVD from Disney's Educator sites, but they were planned for an earlier wave.

Perhaps it could include old Walt interviews with the BBC and the like (though that raises rights issues).

If "rarity" factor should be of any concern, I guess nothing beats some of the material on the "Front Lines" set anyway.
As long as I hear nothing else, I assume that this is a collection of animated theatrical shorts that don't fit into the other sets (SS, MM, DD, Goofy, Pluto).
Among those should be:
Ferdinand The Bull
The Pelican And The Snipe
The Brave Engineer
Morris, The Midget Moose
Lambert, The Sheepish Lion
Susie, The Little Blue Coupe
The Little House
Adventures In Music: Melody
Football Now And Then
Rugged Bear
Toot, Whistle, Plunk And Boom
Pigs Is Pigs
Casey Bats Again
Grin And Bear It
Social Lion
Bearly Asleep
Beezy Bear
Jack And Old Mac
In The Bag
A Cowboy Needs A Horse
...and a few more (slightly longer ones) from 1957 and later.
From the top of my head I'm not sure about all the "Bear" shorts - some of them might be DD titles.
Ben and Me (rather long)
The little handful of Figaro and Chip & Dale titles could be included.
And maybe more that I forgot to mention for no particular reason.

I'm really hoping that this one is the collection of "Special" shorts that we've been waiting for, i.e. "Ferdinand the Bull," "Lambert the Sheepish Lion," "Ben and Me" etc. To me that would make the most sense since they tend to balance the waves (for the most part) between animation and live action. With "Spin and Marty" and "Legendary Heroes" this wave will have 2 Live Action, plus the "Chronological Donald" - we need another animation one.
If it is the old "Alice" and/or "Oswald" shorts I will be really disappointed, because I'm not sure about "Spin and Marty" as it is.
WHERE IS TRUE LIFE ADVENTURES???

I would think the Donald in Mathmagic land/Ben and Me.
We call them the miscellaneous cartoons but from a marketing point of view that isnt a great word to use. Rare woud be far better even if they were not in fact rare.

Could this be the "assorted shorts" Treasure we've waited for? Could it include Chip & Dale? After all, they wouldn't likely use the name "Assorted Shorts."

animation
I'm starting to feel that it is indeed the obscure and/or miscellaneous animated shorts like Lambert, etc. What? No one but me remembers Goliath II? That, they should have included as a bonus on the Jungle Book dvd. Maybe they did. I don't remember.

While I agree with everyone else that it's probably just assorted shorts and unfinished animation, I've got a couple other ideas as to what it could be:
-Academy Award footage: Since I doubt anyone will ever release "The Academy Awards" DVD series, maybe Disney will put some footage on this set (stuff like wins, montages, presentations like Mickey-with-his-grandpa-glasses-from-a-couple-years-ago, etc.)
-Talk show footage: Any Walt interviews done on talk shows could go here.
-Promotional footage: Perhaps any old electronic press kits or promo reels. Maybe some newsreels relating to Disney (before they did away with newsreels before/after the movies)

I honestly don't think I would buy an Alice set, they sound really interesting and It seems like a really interesting peek into Disney's past, but the truth is I found them so boring!TheLittleMerman wrote:I would enjoy seeing the Alice comedies, but even if they were on the discs, I don't know if I would buy it...
I have the two current Alice DVDs which anyone who is interested can see here:
http://www.inkwellimagesink.com/
Also it looks as though a new "expanded edition" is on it's way.
IMHO a Alice set would be an absolute chore to wade through two discs!

Disney Rareties Tin: SPECULATE!
I'm thinking the Rarities is the previously described "Donald in Mathmagic Land" and "Ben and Me" as well, hopefully with other things added--that would make a darn short "Treasure"! So perhaps we'll get "Ferdinand" and "Lambert" and others--and perhaps my favorite, "The Truth About Mother Goose."
What Wonderful World of Disney things do you want, MousePal? I for one would love different sets based on the animal adventures the series used to have. A "Dog" set with "Little Shepherd Dog of Catalina," "Greta the Misfit Greyhound," "Legend of the Two Gypsy Dogs," etc. A "Horse" set with "Run, Appaloosa, Run," "The Horse With the Flying Tail," "The Tattooed Police Horse," etc. A "Wild" set with "Flash the Teenage Otter," "The Wahoo Bobcat," "Run, Light Buck, Run," etc.
And of course I'd like "Gallegher" and "Kilroy," too...but that seems like wishing for the world.[/i]

Rarities
I would like to see Wonderful World of Color/Disney footage. I'd like a collection of all of the intros and special presentations that Walt gave before and throughout his shows. You'll find some of these included in various DVDs: his intros and commentary for the televised release of Pollyanna; the promotion of Old Yeller; Silly Symphonies Treasure has at least one Walt item; Pirates of the Caribbean has Walt's presentation of the development of the theme park ride.... He must have done intros every week, right? (I wasn't alive, or alert, at least.) Obviously, I'd like to see more!
I'd like to see Alice comedies and the like; I've never seen them before... only in photographs. I'm sure they must be hard to sit thru, but I'd like them for historic value.
I'd also like to see something on the development and construction of Walt Disney World, but that's for another discussion topic
