Google Ads at bottom of the pages

Post by Luke »

In a short while, you'll probably notice a banner of ads at the bottom of each page. Certainly better than pop-up ads or those intrusive things that come over the screen, I think.

They're ads through Google's system and UltimateDisney.com earns a certain number of cents each time you click on one of the ads (depending upon the source of the ad). So, if you come across something that interests you, don't hesitate to click. Obviously, you're not allowed to click just for the sake of clicking and fradulent clicking will prove useless, as they just won't count clicks from your clicker if you just keep clicking the ads.

But your support is necessary to run and maintain the site - so this provides a nice alternative way to help out without buying anything. You're still encouraged to use our affiliate links when making purchases from e-tailers like Amazon, Overstock, BestBuy.com, Half.com, DVD Empire, etc. (see the Support Us Page), as I'm sure those will continue to be the most effective ways to cover the site's costs.

But hopefully this will help, too. If it's no good, I'll get rid of it. You'll notice that up til now, this forum has had no advertising of any kind. I'd like to keep it to a minimum, since you're all over-exposed to it everywhere else on the web with pop-ups, pop-unders, pop-overs, pop-throughs, links that actually take you to an ad before you can get to where you want to go, random Amazon department pages opening up, scumware, spyware, sponsored search results, etc.

At the same time, this site needs money to run. Bandwidth is as high as it's ever been, and it will continue to soar as traffic and content increases. I must depend on the few savvy site visitors to help cover this.

Thanks for your understanding and support!

Just wanted to remind you all that if you come across anything interest, you're encouraged to explore it. But be careful, some of it may be bootleg stuff - such as the in-stock Finding Nemo.

Nonetheless, clicking is as low as it's ever been, unfortunately. :(

It is. No one was clicking them below. Presumably people weren't seeing them. Harder to miss now.

Everyone should make a point of clicking the ads at least once every visit. Just try to remember that when you are done reading all of the posts, click on an ad before you leave. Every little bit will help with this bandwidth issue.

Also, this is just a suggestion, but would it help to take older posts, say ones that are over 6 months old, and remove them? They could be archived on a free site, like the ones with all of the pop up ads, thus freeing up bandwidth on here.

Well, I don't think the older posts are having a big effect on bandwidth. Disk space, yes, but that's one area where we appear to be okay for the time being, but I foresee as being a bigger issue as we put up more reviews and the news archives grow. So, deleting old threads, I think, is inevitable...but I don't think it'd have a drastic effect on bandwidth.

I could lower the number of topics per pages and that could reduce some, but I think it's a good number for General Discussion as it is.

Shouldn't Google take care not to publish ads from dubious companies? While I'm sure that we all would like to support this site, we certainly don't want to support bootleg DVD merchants.

One site comes up all the time:
www.limitedmovie.com

It seems to shout "bootleg merchandise" all over it.

- They use special cases, and they can't provide the original DVD cases, even at cost.
- They don't provide any chapter inserts.
- They have lots of rare and discontinued Disney DVDs for sale at suspiciously low prices.
- They claim that their discs will play in any region.
- They don't disclose their address, phone number, or country.
- Their shipping policy mentions that they don't replace "confiscated packages" sent by courier. (!)

I think that what we all should do is report bad ads to Google. Click the "Ads by Google" link, and you'll get a form that allows you to send comments to Google. Remember to check the box that relates to the ad you wish to comment on. If you find anything illegal or suspicious, don't hesitate to report it to Google. Perhaps we can get rid of the illegal stuff altogether.

Well, I reported the limitedmovie ads to Google, and they've promised to take a look at it.

However, they also point out that each individual webmaster can block ads that he doesn't want on his pages.

So, Luke, would it be possible for you to block out the limitedmovie ads? I find it very, very obvious that they offer bootleg merchandise.

Some members at this board have already been exposed to fake copies of The Little Mermaid and other rare Disney DVDs. I wouldn't be at all surprised if some of those came from limitedmovie.

it would be nice to block some of the ads that are bootlegs. I got tired of clicking on them because they are bootlegs so now i have a smaller amount to chose from. Maybe if we get rid of some, then other good ones will come in its place

Hey, Anders, I don't know how I missed your post from a week ago, seeing as how I was on the forum a lot over the Thanksgiving weekend. Nonetheless, I'll block them. I don't think that blocking lots of the bootlegs will get us more legitimate ads - probably PSAs that don't pay anything at all (literally). But I'm going to try to remove www.limitedmovie.com from appearing.

Thanks for the feedback, Anders and poco.
