Tex Avery Box Set R2

Post by DEREKG »

Now that I'm putting together my Looney Tunes collection. (Vol 1 and 2) I remembered Tex Avery. I love these cartoons. I went on ebay and saw they offer a region 2 box set. It's complete! I don't know if they have plans to release this title stateside? I was considering buying a region free DVD player for this reason alone. The set is pretty pricey also! $179-$225.
Does anyone own this set? Is it worth the money?

I don't have that DVD set (I do have the Complete Tex Avery Laserdisc box set) but I think that is a French release and i've seen pics of it on a beautiful tin box edition. The review I read (which was translated from the French) said that a few of the shorts were censord (about 6?) (i have them uncensored on the LD. I think.) and maybe one short was not included (Tom's Cabaña?) but otherwise that it was an great set since so little Avery is on deeveedee, before WB gets around to releasing it here. That was like a year or two ago I think. If you're interested in the R2 set itself i can move this to the International forum where you'll probably get more info from our French members (or you can try this web site's Amazon.fr link to look for it) http://www.amazon.fr/exec/obidos/redire ... tguidet-21

If you want to have more of a general Tex Avery discussion we can leave it here :)

Only one of the cartoons on the LD set is edited: "Droopy's Good Deed."

But as for the R2 set, I don't know a whole lot about it except that I remember people remarking that there may be a better restoration for it when they finally release it in the US. However, I'm a little skeptical of that after seeing what happened with Tom and Jerry.

I, myself, have a region-free player, but at the price that set goes, I'm content to just wait things out.

Man, I miss these cartoons. I grew up on them and it pains me to see them edited on Cartoon Network.

That Tex Avery boxset isn't complete. The thought police wouldn't let them release cartoons with black characters. :x I'm starting to think the censorship on the Tom & Jerry set was intentional.

Me, too. It seems there's still no word on a the replacement disc. Isn't it awfully convenient that the majority of the buyers won't see any controvercial material to complain about? Only the people that know about and really want to see the cartoons unedited are going to send off for that replacement disc. . . either way, they escape any racist comments. But my real question is this: why is this replacement disc thing taking so long?

But to get back to the Tex Avery set, I wonder if any of the cartoons on it are edited (and not just absent altogether).

Thanks Sunset Girl for that LD info. What was censored on "Droppy's Good Deed"? Some of those cartoon explotions? it's been awhile since I've watched my LDs

I'll try to find the link where i read the review of the R2 DVD. i might have it somewhere in the caverns of my HD or maybe not.
I just recall reading it and saying mmm i'll have to take the undedited scenes of the 6 shorts from the LD and paste them into this DVD if they never release the cartoons unedited. The site had a list of the censored stuff on the DVD

No problem, deathy mousie. :)

Remember the scene in which Droopy fetches an old man's hat that Butch had hidden a bomb in? The old man starts to reward Droopy with money, and Butch forgets all about the bomb and shoves Droopy aside. There is an explosion, and suddenly, Butch is on the roof of a building dressed as a baby. Huh?

What we are missing is the bomb gives the old man a "black face," and he suddenly has a Steppin' Fetchit type voice. Something like that, anyway. And apparently Butch dons the baby outfit in the same sequence. It's been years and years since I've seen this, so my memory is a little hazy.

Seems awfully strange though that this would be the one thing edited out of the LD when all those other gags apparently passed with flying colors.

Thanks again Sunset Image mmm.. maybe they didn't have a complete print and went with what they had. Since the other stuff is there.

Ok got info on the censoring of the DVD. ALSO found our very own UD thread started by 2099net :) on oct 2003 about the DVD: <a href="http://www.ultimatedisney.com/forum/vie ... =1533">Tex Avery Boxset (France) December 10th</a>. He got the set.

The censorship info is from from a couple of articles in the news section of DvDFR

the articles are
<a href="http://www.dvdfr.com/news/news.php?id=2595">15 dec '03</a>
<a href="http://www.dvdfr.com/news/news.php?id=2597">22 dec '03</a>
<a href="http://www.dvdfr.com/news/news.php?id=2599">6 jan '04</a>

If i undertand it correctly, it's 7 shorts censored and 2 missing:

The censored:

Blitz Wolf
Daredevil Droopy
Droopy's Good Deed
Garden Gopher
Happy Go Nutty
Henpecked Hoboes
Lucky Ducky

Blitz Wolf has eliminated all reference to Japan and the Japanese, the other 6, explosions and their results.

I probably was remembering it was 6 censored cus of the 6 that are not censored on the LD (while Droopy's Good Deed is) or because 6 were censored for the same thing...

annnnnd
The missing:

Half Pint Pygmy
Uncle Tom's Cabaña

:(

Well there you have it

Actually, there were 2 shorts censored from the laserdisc box. Garden Gopher was censored as well. I have a copy taped from TV in the 80s, uncensored, but I have don't have Droopy's Good Deed uncensored.

That's a nice tin. Oh how I would love this set. It's not perfect but it sure is better than nothing.

Well, it looks like a tuff call! Thanks for the quick links to the other discussions. I guess it looks probable that Warner will release a better set in the us shortly? Who knows? Anyway, the R2 set is hard to resist. I love the tin. It would be nice to see these cartoons completly uncut though, so maybe I should hold off for awhile? Knowing my luck, has soon as I buy it, Warner will release a fully remastered, fully uncut set here in the states. If I hold out, it will go OOP forever.

That's just my luck! :brick:

So what is missing from Gardern Gopher? Wow, I didn't know about that one. . .

The usual blackface gag, when dynamite explodes.
