Any news of Brother Bear coming in its OAR to England?

Post by Wonderlicious »

Brother Bear is one of the rare Disney movies I've yet to see; apart from Home on the Range and a good number of the package features, I've never experienced this movie. Unfortunately, as we all know, BVHE UK released a piss-pooh 1 Disc release; not only did they miss out huge bunches of bonus features but they didn't present the movie in its OAR. I really want to see Brother Bear but I'm too scared of watching a pan and scan version.

Does anyone know if the uncropped version will surface in the UK or at least somewhere in Region 2? As I said, I want to see Brother Bear, but how am I supposed to watch the movie if there's no way to see the movie in its proper form?

The 2 disc set that was released in the US but not here, was released in France 2 weeks ago! It includes all of the bonus features that the R1 version did plus it's in it's original aspect ratio!

Also because it is R2 the DVD is PAL as oppsed to NTSC, so it's thumbs up all around!

you can check it out here:

And the new French 2-Disc set also features a whole Publicity Section on Disc 2, not be found anywhere on the Region 1 DVD. This is why I bought the 3 editions :D (3 'coz I've also bought the pitiful French "Deluxe Edition" 3 months ago which was bare bone but with a stunning pakaging !) !
Chandler (to Phoebe, over the phone) : Listen, Joey isn't gonna be here tonight so why don't you come over and I'll let you uh.. feel my bicep; or maybe more...

I would have thought that amazon.fr would have supported switch/solo becuase all of the amazons are linked, so if you're registered at one, you can use the same username and password at any of them and it comes up with your details. Also I have used my Switch card at Amazon US in the past but strangely I can't do it any more, but it doesn't appear it can be used at France either sorry!

Well, I finally could get Region 1 DVDs, and Brother Bear was one of them, yet I am wondering if I should pick up the French edition. I hear that there are more extras on it, and considering that PAL speedback can kill some video artefacts, I assume that there is less colour banding, edge enhancemant etc. Is it worth picking up? And randomly, does it contain the 1:66:1 cropped version also?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it's not possible to see BB in the exact AR as the cionema version due to the change of the screen width that occurs after the transformation (Kenai as bear can "see more" and so can we - the AR changes). I think I read somewhere that this nice little detail didn't make it to DVD - even the R1 one.

No, the US release and the French release both included this aspect ratio change, those were the only two though.

Yep, I've got the R1 and it includes both the 1.66:1 version and the OAR 2.35:1 one. In the OAR, the film is always in 2.35:1, but the opening 20 minutes or so have black bars on the sides, thereby retaining the original OAR, then these black bars on the left and right disappear for the remainder of the movie.

:-P

The theatrical OAR of Brother Bear is 2.39

The US widescreen DVD version measured 2.40 on the Bearvision part and 1.74 (or 1.75) in the opening pillarboxed segment and also on the Pan Scan version according to NTSC standards. (i can't recall if both were 1.74, or one was 1.75 and the other 1.74; the measurements were made many many moons ago :-P)

The UK PAL Pan Scan version measured 1.75 according to PAL standards and was showing a sliver more image vertically (mainly on the top) than the US version, probably due to NTSC's mpeg2 480 video specification chopping off 6 pixels from NTSC's 486, which PAL's mpeg2 576 doesn't do. :-P

Don't have the measurements of the French PAL widescreen edition cus i haven't seen captures.
