I am extremely satisfied with "Mary Poppins." All of the documentaries on the second disc are fantastic and I loved the commentary. Especially when they would play excerpts of Walt Disney. I wish more DVD's would be treated this way. About the only thing I haven't done yet are the pop up facts and the game. However, I am disapointed with "The Princess Diaries 2" DVD. I like the movie, but the bonus features are nothing great. They are all very short and don't tell you very much. However, the commentary is very good. Did you know that the composer John Williams and comic book legend Stan Lee have cameos?

Being the big Julie Andrews fan that I am, I am simply happy to have them both on DVD. I have always had a soft spot for Mary Poppins in my heart. I really enjoyed the Princess Diaries 2 even though it pales in comparison to Mary Poppins. Both movies I believe are wonderful and I would recommend them to most of my friends.

As far as the extras, I have only had the time to rummage my way through the Mary Poppins extras. Although I haven't fully explored every bonus feature as of yet, what I have seen was interesting and entertaining. I am not expecting the features of the TPD2 disc to be overwhelmingly nice but I think that I will enjoy most of them (provided Raven doesn't take up too much of my time).

I cannot really comment on A/V quality because anything is better than my old beat up, barely runs without ruining the VCR video of Mary Poppins.

Overall, I am glad I bought the DVDs. My $32.76 was well spent.

Well I got Mary Poppins for Christmas and I just finished watching it. There are a few things that I wish were on the DVD instead of others. All the things from the Gold Collection DVD that sound very interesting would have been MUCH better than the set-top game and the "cat and King" featurette. i am very hapy with the restoration, the paintings especially show no grain, odd texture etc. but they are clean and flat. the sound is also very good!
it's a great dvd but it could have had more of the "On-set" featurettes and footage. That was the most interesting part, for me, of the behind the scenes things. i wish to see more of what went on in a typical day of shooting.
just some thoughts :)

I got both of these titles for Christmas, but have only watched Poppins so far. The DVD features are excellently produced, making this by far the best DVD for a live action title Disney's ever done. It was surprising to see Disney be so revealing and honest about the film's production (including the problems with the book's author) but also very refreshing. I was slightly disappointed in the transfer, though. It looked great, no doubt about it, but I was expecting something a bit more dazzaling considering this is a Lowry transfer. At times the film did look as dazzling as I could ever hope for, but there were some scenes where colors looked flat and kind of murky. I'm pretty certain this has to do with either the print used or simply the way it was shot, but it's bizarre having one scene sparkling and leaping off the screen and then the next looking flat and dull. As others have said, the DEHT mix was also rather odd due to its very obvious modern sound effects. It was a little distracting at times, but not as abominable to me as it is to others. All in all, though, it's an excellent DVD. The movie has never looked or sounded better, and the supplements are deep and informative without getting dry. Bravo, Disney!

After a couple of Disney releases that were less than stellar, this DVD reminded me of just how good the studio can be when they put their minds to it. The movie itself is simply amazing, but the presentation and extras really blew me away. Each bonus feature gave new information and stories with barely a trace of overlap. I was also pleasantly surprised by the text commentary; it equalled the quality of those on the Star Trek movies.

After hearing about P.L. Travers on this DVD, I'm not quite sure what to think about her. At times she gave some valuable input, but other times it seemed like she was hindering Walt and his team. It is interesting to speculate about how the movie would have turned out if she had given the rights away immediately or if she had not participated in the production. However, I am extremely pleased with the final product that we did get.

What I demanded from this DVD were Julie Andrews, Dick Van Dyke, and penguins. I got those and plenty more. This is one for the whole family.

The movie itself is great, of course, but I was hoping that the extras would have been larger and more deep. But I was pleasently surprised to see footages of the premiere and plenty of trailers. 7 stars out of 10.

The only question I have that wasn't answered by the DVD: how did they get the different colors of medicine to come out of the bottle in the same shot?

I was actually wondering that, myself, Brandon. They constantly mention that special effect over and over on the DVD, but never say HOW it was done. The only logical conclusion I can come up with still makes no sense. The only way I can see it being done is if the spoons had powder in them that colorized the water or whatever was in the bottle, but that doesn't work because you can clearly see that the spoons are empty. I guess they wanted to leave some mystery to the film!

I also had the same question.

Mary Poppins was awsome, hadn't seen it in ages and couldn't remember the second half. Feed the Birds was simply awsome, don't understand how Chim-Chim-Cheree could win over it. The documentary was great, the mment about Sherman singing the song for Walt at Disneyland, when the single bird came swooping down     Good Stuff!!

Both the Julie Andrews films were wonderful! :D
Mary Poppins was overall GREAT! I've only borrowed the Mary Poppins DVD from a friend because the cheapest it was being sold here was $19.99  (but I'll be buying it from Suncoast since they offer 2 Disney DVDs for $32.00. :) )

As for Princess Diaries 2, it was fine...
but I'm just hoping they'd release a 2-disc set like they did for Princess Diaries! 8)

I realize I'm very late in posting my thoughts on the Mary Poppins dvd, after all it came out over a month ago, but I have just now watched it with the DEHT (Disney Enhanced Home Theater) mix. While I was very aprehensive about it, because of the addition of new sound effects and the re-recording of old ones, I must say it didn't sound as bad as I feared it would. The most glaring difference was the fireworks sequence which was a tad over the top and took me out of the movie for a few minutes. The other additions were subtle and not as noticable. In doing an A/B comparison between the DEHT mix and the original mix, I agree that the orchestrations sound cleaner in the original mix. The DEHT mix seems slightly muffled due to noise reduction enhancements. But listening to the DEHT on it's own, it sounds pretty good and was not quite the desecration everyone was making it out to be.

 I sadly have not yet purchased the Mary Poppins: 40th Anniversary DVD, but I got the Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement DVD for Christmas from a friend. I am thoroughly satisfied with the movie, but the special features are to say the least, mediocre.....
