Will the Smurfs ever come to DVD?

Post by DEREKG »

Just wondering if anyone knows, will we ever see season sets or a complete box set of the smurfs? Since Peyo died in "92" (creator of the smurfs) who has the rights to them? Hanna Barbera? I thought for sure we would see or have heard something by now! My friend bought a bootleg set from ebay and they were poor in quality, taped from TV. As popular as they were in the 80's they need to be on DVD.

Bring back the Smurfs, or go Smurf yourself!!! :P

I can't remember where I read this but I am almost certain that the Smurfs are coming to DVD in season box sets.

I don't know if this is of any use to you, but Australia is releasing them in 6-episode single-volume discs:

http://www.ezydvd.com.au/item.zml/229281 (Volume 1 from Ezy - Now Available!)

Or from Empire DVD:

Volume 1 - http://www.empiredvd.com.au/buy_dvd_info.asp?iid=13689

Volume 2 - http://www.empiredvd.com.au/buy_dvd_info.asp?iid=23969 (Coming January 19)

Can't find an episode listing as yet, but I'm pretty sure the one where they are trying to build a dam is on the first disc. I nearly bought it last week, and I may do so today.

The Complete first season is available in Canada:

http://www.amazon.ca/exec/obidos/ASIN/B ... 92-1560344

Although it looks as though they are in French only!

Your right, they are in french only. I signed the petition though. Hopefully since Canada has them, the USA is next. I'll keep my fingers crossed!
Thank both of you for your time and info! :)

Well, there are evidently people who disagree with you. :P And regardless of which, it IS on DVD so it is too late!

As well as people who disagree with your stance on National Treasure

However, I will go and see NT regardless, simply because of this (negative) Rolling Stone review:

"Rancid cinematic cheese."

actually, there are lots of great 80´s cartoons that deserve a really good dvd seasons release....

like the smurf of course, and (please, pleeeeease) Thundercats, or He-man (here in America), Silverhawks or the real gohstbusters
I'ts enough for this restless warrior just to be with you...

The AV Channel/Madman here in Australia seems to be getting a lot of exclusives lately, with box-set collections of classic 1970s and 1980s series: Voltron, Battle of the Planets, Star Blazers, and perhaps most importantly, the complete 1980s Astro Boy. Not sure how they are doing it all, but they are. Bless their cotton socks.

Check out their general website:

Or their dedicated "Retro" site:

I thought Astroy Boy was going to get a big spalshy release in 2004 because of Astro Boy's anniversary. If it happened I sure didn't hear about it.

I grew up watching the 80's version of Astro Boy and I wouldn't mind checking it out on DVD to relive some childhood memories.
