Anamorphic Question

I am the proud owner of the 2-Disc Set of Aladdin and my family is the proud owner of a new widescreen HDTV. We've hooked up the dvd player and made the proper adjustments and it looks spectacular, but I noticed when testing the Aladdin disc, although it looks fantastic and properly enhanced (as indicated on the cover), the picture is filling the entire 16:9 (1.78:1) screen, though the movie's ratio is only 1.66:1. Is there a problem? Should there be thin black vertical bars on the sides of the image?
What would this wretched world be like without Disney?
