Most Anticipated DVDs

Post by Satoshi »

Now I was pretty sure that there was another thread like this from earlier in the year, but after searching through numerous pages of results from the search engine without finding it, I've decided to just start a new thread.

List your most anticipated DVDs which are being released during the remainder of 2004.

1. Star Wars Trilogy - What else could be at number one?
2. 24: Season Three - I own and love the first two seasons, but haven't seen a minute of season three yet. I'm greatly anticipating doing so.
3. Shrek 2 - Absolutely loved the movie. I just hope that the rumors of it being a one-disc set aren't true.
4. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban - I believe this is my favorite Potter film so far (which is saying alot). So while the DVD probably won't have much useful in terms of special features, the film itself will be more than worth it.
5. The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King: Extended Edition - My third favorite movie of all-time will get even better with the extended version, I'm sure. And the bonus features are guaranteed to be extensive and wonderful.
6. Mulan: Special Edition - I haven't seen this movie in quite a while but I remember loving it the last time I saw it. I only wish there was still going to be a gift set available.
7. Spider-Man 2 - Probably my favorite movie of the summer, but I've already seen it more than I've seen Shrek or Harry Potter, so I'm not as eager to see it again.
8. Alias: Season Three - While this season wasn't nearly as wonderful as the first two, it was still good, enjoyable entertainment. I'm looking forward to adding this to my Alias collection.
9. Gone With the Wind: Special Edition - This would probably be higher up on my list if only I had seen the film before. But nevertheless, the DVD sounds spectacular, so this will probably be a blind buy for me.
10. Batman: The Animated Series: Volume Two - I've gotten much enjoyment out of volume one so far, and it sounds like volume two may be coming before the end of the year, so this makes the list.

Oh yes that's it. The episodes you were looking for? I hope they release them. It is said that if the Star Stealer does well, we can expect more RB releases. They said the same of Care Bears but so far no SE releases. :(

Being a "most anticipated" dvds thread, there's a few here and there that i personally am excited about, but by no means is this what i am going to buy or what's on my list; although I'm about to start a bi-annual (isn't it bi = 4 times a year) each season thread of whats of your list. I hope it isn't too close to what Satoshi has already started, thus I will hold off till this thread dies down in a few days, as I'm sure DVDs don't have such a large impact of the forum as the Bible does.

As for me:

Star Wars Trilogy
Spider-Man 2
Fahrenheit 9/11
Mulan
Aladdin
Mary Poppins
Walt Disney Treasures Wave 4
Shrek 2
Harry Potter 3
Gone with the Wind (moreso for it's historical value, as I as well have yet to see this "pretigious" film)
Looney Tunes Spotlight Collection Vol. 2
Seinfeld Seasons 1, 2, 3 Giftset
Frasier: The Final Season
The O.C. Season 1
That 70's Show Season 1

There's certainly much more I'd love to get, but for now these are my must-buys i suppose. I guess you'll see my full-list in a few days.

Like Paul, this is def not a "to-buy" list, as purchases always depend on how much $ I have at the time, lol. I would love to have them all, eventually, and will get as many as I can when they come out.

(Oh, and Paul, I like the season/quarter idea)

Listed by month, and then in order of priority:

August

2. Touched By An Angel Season 1
3. The Passion of the Christ (Hmm, if DK is right about a SE, I may rethink this)
4. The Princess Diaries: SE
5. The Lion King 2 SE
6. Mickey, Donald, Goofy: The Three Musketeers (rental, purchase if I like it)
7. Ella Enchanted (rental- haven't seen it)

September:

3. 7th Heaven Season One
4. Ellen Season One
5. Home on the Range

October:
1. Aladdin: Platinum Edition
2. Mulan: SE
3. Road To Avonlea Season 4 (I can't find a release date on this, but I'm hoping for October)
3. Shrek 2 (I need to buy the first one too)
4. The Stepford Wives
5. Fraggle Rock
6. Troy (for rental)

November:
1. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
2. Friends: Season 8
3. The Golden Girls: Season 1
4. Spider-Man 2
5. Gone with the Wind 4-Disc CE (so glad I held out on the first one)
6. Seinfeld Seasons 1&2

8. Home Improvement Season 1
9. Mickey's Twice Upon A Christmas

December:
1. Mary Poppins: 40th Anniversary Edition
2. The Matrix Boxed Set
3. Wave 4 Treasures
4. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King - Extended Edition

2005
1. Cinderella: Platinum Edition
2. Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith
3. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone: SE (hopefully)
4. Pocahontas: Masterpiece Edition
5. Friends Season 10
6. Lilo and Stitch: Masterpiece Edition
7. Friends Season 9
8. Bambi: Platinum Edition
9. Titanic SE (just learned of this from Nedakh- wish I hadn't bought the first one )
10. Grease: Special Edition (hadn't heard of this 'till DK posted it)
11. The Incredibles
12. Batman: SE (Woah, DK, I didn't know about the Batman SEs either!!)
13. Batman Returns: SE
14. Beetlejuice: SE (another exciting news bit I picked up from DK!)
15. The Bourne Supremacy (I need to get the first one too)
16. Frasier season sets (I will begin collecting these soon)

Here's the breakdown on those:

DavisDVD had reported a few months ago that Mel Gibson was working on extensive supplements for the Passion DVD. When it was found out that the DVD would be barebones, DavisDVD reported that sources had said a SE was planned, possibly for a December release. If a SE's coming that soon, I can definitely wait for it.

When the original Grease DVD was released, DVDFile conducted an interview with the director who said that he was recording a commentary track for a SE due out in 2004. Well, so far we've heard nothing about a SE for this year, so either it's coming in December (since many November titles have already been given press releases), or it's coming next year.

WB held a Q&A session online (I think it was with TheDigitalBits) and they were asked is the Batman films will be released as SE's. WB confirmed that the first two Burton films will come out in 2005 to promote the new film. They were also asked about a Beetlejuice SE and they said that Beetlejuice is one of the titles being considered for SE treatment and that's it's pretty likely it'll receive it. My guess is that'll come out in 2005 to coincide with the Batman releases since they're all Burton films.

I won't even get into the whole Harry Potter thing because that release has been all but confirmed. Basically, Chris Columbus said he's recording a commentary track, some of the cast mentioned that a director's cut is being released, and someone from WB a while ago mentioned in passing how they're currently looking in the vaults for behind the scenes footage that was shot everyday on the set for a future re-release. Because there won't be a new HP DVD next year, I think it's pretty likely we'll see a movie 1 SE then, and hopefully movie 2, as well.

Awesome! Thanks for that, DK, great info! Yeah, HP1SE is pretty much a given, and all the others sound like they are either confirmed or all-but-confirmed too, which is great!

Unfortunately, I'll be double-dipping on the Batmans, HP, the Matrices, and Titanic. Oh well, it's worth it, and it's been worth having these (except Titanic) up until now.

Same w/ Grease... my sister has the original release, so it won't technically be a double-dip. I'm sure the SE will be worth it, though.

But yeah, if Passion is being rereleased in December, I can definitely hold out, especially in a jam-packed fall & winter like this one. I just hope the SE comes sooner than later.

Wow, this is a really tough thread! Every since I've had a DVD playing device, I've alway come up with a "list" every six months or so and I almost never pick up more than two titles from it. I just don't have that much cash, and when I do have it, it's hard for me to part with it. However, here's what I must have!

Ella Enchanted

THis is a live-action Shrek, and regardless of what reviews say, I loved it!

Mean Girls

Really good movie, especially for a Chick Flick. This could end up on my Top 10 of the year. Very smart, very witty, very good.

The THree upcoming animated classics, of course!

De-Lovely

It's obvious I'm not going to get to see this in theaters, so I hope the DVDD comes out sometime this year! I love musicals!

The Twilight Samurai

This was one of this year's foriegn-langauage Academy Award nominees. It should be noted that it's the first film from Japan to be listed for 30 years!

Spider-Man 2 (Collection?)

I never got the first Spider-Man on DVD, so I might pick it up if it comes in a "collection" edition.

I would also like to pick these up at an affordable price:

Beauty and the Beast Platinum Edition
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Platinum Edition
Sleeping Beauty Special Edition

Non-Disney related:

The Color Purple

For being an Oscar freak, I have yet to see this supposed masterpiece. I would like to get my hands on the newly released Special Edition DVD version instead of the plentiful cardboard cased one you can find at Wal-Mart for 8 dollars!

Also:

Gone With The Wind Special Edition

I'm so glad I saw this on the forum today! I love this movie!

Well I'm thrilled that you want to see it. It's hands-down my favorite movie, my love for Whoopi Goldberg's acting aside. Definitely spring for the special edition. I have both, and the snapper is a waste of money. It has a couple of special features (surprisingly including the trailer), but you have to flip the disc over half-way into the movie! The 2-Disc has great features, but no commentary, unfortunately. Whoopi got robbed for the Best Actress Oscar here, but at least she got the Golden Globe.
Nedakh wrote:The Matrix I will pass on, hopefully they will sell a two disc amaray cased The Matrix and I am all set. Not buying that boxed set.
Well supposedly it's going to have the Wachowski brothers explaining the philosophy behind the Matrix movies in detail, which is something I'd love to hear straight from the horse's mouth, rather than from bickering fans.
Nedakh wrote:Titanic SE will be amazing, it is rumored to be a 3 disc all inclusive ultimate edition. Well worth the double dip.
That sounds awesome!!!
Nedakh wrote:HP's I am a little annoyed with. The only thing that will make me buy them over again if they do a extended cut like LOTR, otherwise I'll live without the few frills. The original two discs is plenty for me. Not a huge fan of the cardboard packaging *sigh*
I hate everything about the current HP DVDs (except the movies themselves, of course), so almost any improvement will be welcomed. I'm hoping for substantive features this time around. It's not often that 2 disc sets get upgraded to 2-Disc Special Editions, but in this case, it's needed.

I don't think that they will go into much detail on the new disc(s) as doesn't the contract with Rowling insist on minimal behind-the-scenes content being released? (she doesn't want the "magic" of the films to be spoiled for young children or something).

As for my post anticipated DVDs, I have my own selection:

Freaks (which hopefully Amazon will be sending out any day now)
Harvey Birdman vol 1
Bo' Selecta Vol 3 (plus Ho Ho Ho Selecta)
Looney Tunes Golden Collection Vol 2
UK Tom and Jerry HMV exclusive set 3 Then I will have all T&J theatrical shorts (I found the Million Dollar Cat on the Wiskers Away! compliation DVD).
A Very Peculiar Practice Series 2 Must be coming out soon.
Shaun of the Dead
Donnie Darko Director's Cut 2 disc DVD includes the original edit, which I have the US version of, but this includes additional UK specific extras, plus a disc with the new cut, new extras and new UK specific extras!
Most Haunted series 3 pt 2 and Most Haunted Live Vol 2 Poor Yvette.
Most of my Blu-ray collection some of my UK discs aren't on their database

There's a 4 disc twin pack in the UK, so it seems likely.
