W :o W. If that's legit, then that's a pretty big deal. I certainly haven't heard of them being released. Can you provide a link for where you found this?

It looks legit

Post by ValenciaJoe »

I found it on Amazon, but only as a used copy:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/ ... 76-6423035

It sounds legit.. the address given is right down the street from where I grew up (the Atwater Village suburb of Los Angeles). This is just a stone's throw away from Disney's first studio on Hyperion (which is now a Gelson's Market).
It's more fun when we're number 1!

Well it has to be legit - the trademark on the Alice comedies was not renewed way back, so they are public domain. I have no idea what the source material is but anyone has the right to distribute them.

These are public domain films so as Jimmy said, yes they are legitamate.

Ray Pointer is the person responsible for this and all other home video releases through InkwellImages.com. He is a recognized cartoon and silent film historian with a vast knowledge into the productions of golden age studio animation as well as a veteran animator and director himself with much experience in the field. All of his home video productions are sourced from the very best available existing film prints and the quality displayed is among the finest I've had the pleasure of seeing in many years. He has done a fantastic job with the Fleischer Inkwell series and I strongly suggest that those of you who are interested in these titles show support, as this is all done as a labor of love and recently Ray has voiced plans to eventually release his entire existing video catalogue and transfer a good portion to digital form so it would be great if we could all support his ventures. Not only is he devoted to the art, but also in a position to make it accessible which is important. I believe Ray is currently in the process of working on an anthology of early George Herriman silent Krazy Kat shorts, which I am really hoping falls through!

Rest assured that you will recieve top value with these products!

Ray Pointer has posted on another forum some info on the upcoming expanded editions of his 2 oop Disney DVDs. I'm glad I held off buying the old version of Before Walt. I'm going to have to double dip on the Alice disc though.
As for the new verison of ALICE, I am presently having to deal with family matters that will be taking up a great deal of my time. I can only say that I would like to have it out in three or four months. Although I have all of the material, I have had to wait for better weather because I intend to do some location shooting at the original sites of Disney's uncle Robert's house and the store front where the Disney Studio began. The building is still there, and functioned as the studio from 1924 until 1931, when it moved to the famous Hyperion location at the corner of Hyoperion Avenue and Griffith Park Boulevard.
2/28/05
I am also starting an expanded two part program on the ALICE COMEDIES that will focus on the role of Margaret Winkler as the mother of Walt Disney's animation career. The second part, "The Four Faces of Alice," will focus on the different girls who portrayed the character from 1923 to 1927.

Finally, watch for an expanded version of my initial entry, BEFORE WALT. This new version will include a more intensive history of animation, including recently acquired footage demonstrating early animation concepts from ancient Egypt, experiments by daVinci, Emile Reynaud and others leading up to Disney's initial efforts in Kansas City. I think that is about enought for now, don't you think?

Yes, they are legit! And I have both of them! And you can check my DVDaf link too!

I was sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo excited when I saw these DVDs that I ordered them immediately, unfortunately despite the fact that I love Disney and love seeing the early stuff I find the Alice shorts a big let down! They are just so dull I mean it took me about 6 months to force myself through the 2 dvds. There is just no interest factor in them for me. It's nice to see a couple but more than a couple is just torture! Alhtough the shorts have been restored by Inkwell images, it's not Lowry job and there is still some grain, but all in all they are a vast improvement over what the unrestored print would look like!

If you are desperate for them, you will probably get them anyway, but I think that if you've seen the "Alice's Wonderland" short of the Alice in Wonderland DVD, that will probably be enough, that is probably the most exciting one of the lot, and you're not missing much if you don't see any of the others!

The Alice pilot on the Alice in Wonderland DVD is not the most exciting Alice short. The shorts staring Virginia Davis as Alice are very good. They have a higher live action budget and remind me of Our Gang shorts. The post Virginia Alice shorts focused more on animation than live action so those are not as entertaining to me. Plus I'm trying to collect all of Walt's cartoon shorts on DVD.

I was over at TheDigitalBits, and Barrie Maxwell's column mentioned a new "Alice in Cartoonland" DVD coming from VCI on February 27. So I dug up this old thread since it'd be a worthy bump.

Image

VCI Page, SRP $19.99

Description:
Walt Disney produced 57 “Alice” cartoons between 1923 and 1927. The series owed its success to both its clever special effects – cartoon characters interacting with a live young girl cleverly superimposed within the frame – and its breezy humor. The cartoons on this DVD have remarkable clarity because they were transferred direct from 35mm nitrate negatives.

1. Alice’s Orphan - also on the Inkwell DVD
2. Alice’s Tin Pony
3. Alice in the Jungle - also on the Disney Rarities and Inkwell DVD
4. Alice’s Balloon Race
5. Alice Chops the Suey
6. Alice the Whaler - also on the Disney Raritites and Inkwell DVD
7. Alice Rattled by Rats - also on the Inkwell DVD
8. Alice’s Egg Plant - also on the Disney Rarities and Inkwell DVD
9. Alice the Jail Bird
10. Alice Solves the Puzzle - also on the Inkwell DVD

11. North of Nowhere (Life Cartoon Comedy)
12. Hitting the Trail (Life Cartoon Comedy)
13. Whales Everywhere (Life Cartoon Comedy)

Bonus:
Extra Features:
1. “Alice in Hollywood” by JB Kaufman, co-author, with Russell Merritt, of “Walt in Wonderland: The Silent Films of Walt Disney"

2. Three cartoons from the seldom seen “Life Cartoon Comedy” series, re-titled “Krazy Kid Cartoons” for their 1930 sound reissue.

3. Synopsis of each of the cartoons on the DVD with a click to play feature.

It's also available on Amazon for pre-order at $17.99, and the link here supports UD! :D

And since the InkwellImagesInk link originally provided doesn't work, here's their homepage for their Disney materials:

I kept meaning to post the Legendary Laugh O Gram news here. I know Ray put incredible amounts of efforts into restoring them as best he could. Ray is also working on a revised version of Alice in Cartoonland with way more cartoons and way better restoration now that smaller players can do a better job of restoring. He has 5 of the 7 laughograms(six still exist but he could not get access to the last one in a museum)

Hmmmm... I wonder if Disney will be doing any Laugh-O-Gram or Alice Comedy DVDs as part of their new Legacy line?
