Showgirls V.I.P Edition!

Image

Supplements:

- Screen-Specific Audio Commentary
- Video Commentary
- Featurette
- Video Diary
- Theatrical Trailer

- Deluxe Packaging: the V.I.P. treatment would not be complete without the lavish packaging, and MGM actually has delivered on this count. The new artwork draws on the familiar Showgirls iconography but is nicely redone, and there are some hysterical goodies in the oversized box. Feast on two Showgirls shot glasses, a deck of playing cards, a foldout Berkeley poster with a blindfold and two paste-on tit tassels (what a fun drinking game!), plus eight bonus game cards. These DVD-sized cards each has a cool PR photo on one side, and the other a fun party game "The ABCs of T&A," "Sip 'N' Strip," etc. One even has some movie facts, which tell us that "Verhoeven and Esterhaz extensively researched the film by visiting real Las Vegas strip clubs." I bet. The packaging is the best part of this set.

I just hope having it shipped over to the UK doesn't result in broken glasses. Still, my Schindler's List Gift Set survived without breakage or cracking... something I gather most US deliveries didn't, so there's hope!

I had't thought about that, but I think I'm looking forward more to the tassles than to the shot glasses.

Although a combination of bourbon and tassles could prove interesting on a weekend.

Might make me view the film in a whole new light.

I think it should have come with a dancer's pole. It is meant to be a good workout...

I thought the NC-17 comment was a joke. Thanks for the warning. lol! The VIP edition is only $27 USD. That's not a bad deal.

I heard that Showgirls is an awful film.

I gotta go now! Storms are coming.

Well, it depends on what you call awful. If you think it's a serious drama, then yes, it's awful. Take it seriously and it will only be seen as stupid and worthless.

But it never was intended to be a serious drama. Like most of Verhoeven's other films (Robocop, Starship Troopers, even some would argue Basic Instinct) it's a satire. It makes statements about a slightly exaggerated version of today's society with an underplayed dry, sardonic humour (and more than a little camping-it-up up too).

Personally, I think it's great - its a subtle pervertion of the American Dream (everyone wants to become rich and famous) - Naomi just takes what she thinks will be a 'shortcut' and learns that perhaps it's not worth it after all, and perhaps other things are more important. If there is a fault with the film its that Elizabeth Berkley isn't a strong enough actress to walk the fine line between the drama, wit and the camp (some would argue she's not a good enough actor to actually 'act', but I don't think she's that bad). However, a lot of the supporting cast can handle the material correctly.

Oh dear. I feel so dirty now.
