The Ultimate Matrix Collection

Post by Loomis »

Digital Bits and HMV seem to have posted specs for a Matrix Trilogy set on December 6.

Nobody can tell you what the 'Matrix Boxset' is...except retailers, apparently...

I've cut and paste the report I did for DVDBits as a summary...

A few months back, we reported that a 9-disc Matrix Trilogy boxset had gone up foor Future Alert on EzyDVD. It was a 9-disc boxset with a number of groovy features. Then, not long after, Village Roadshow dropped a cone of silence on us, saying that no official word was to be made (yet) on the box. Now it would seem HMV UKhave posted specs for a 10-disc boxset, according to DigitalBits.

For full details, visit the HMV link, but essentially the box seems to be broken up in the following way:

Disc 1: The Matrix (new transfer & commentary); Disc 2: Matrix Revisited (180 minute doco that was released a few years back); Disc 3: Matrix Reloaded: Extended Edition (somehow they've managed to make this even longer, with another 55 minutes, taking the total to an excruciating 190 minutes. However, features remain the same as current release); Disc 4: Matrix Reloaded Revisited (the titles get worse, don't they?); Disc 5: Matrix Revolutions (same crap film, brand new features); Disc 6:Disc 5: Matrix Revolutions Revisted (guess what this is. Go on...another 180 minutes); Disc 7: The Animatrix (existing DVD - why couldn't the sequels be this good?). The remaining discs offer the most new content for fans. Disc 8 offers The Roots of the Matrix, another 180 minutes. This one looks interesting as it seems to cover influences, philosophy and plausibility. Disc 9 is the Burley Man Chronicles which seems to have the people behind the Matrix discussing their work, but couldn't be covered in the other 9 hours. And Disc 10 (just to outdo the Alien Quadrilogy) is the Zion Archive with Production Assets Developed For The Matrix Universe, including Concept Artwork, Storyboards, Drawings, as well as ROM features. Phew.

Seems like a good set, with a little bit of filler. Also disappointing that the theatrical cut of Matrix Reloaded (as bad as it was), won't be in the set. Still, Matrix fans should be quivering with pleasure

It definitely sounds like a good set, but I'm hoping WB takes the Alien route and releases each film in its own separate special edition. Why? Because the only film I'm interested in double dipping on is the original. I thought the sequels were decent, but nothing more, and certainly not good enough to re-purchase (though I must admit the Reloaded extended cut sounds intriguging). The list price for this will undoubtedly be insane, which is another factor keeping me from double dipping. Hopefully someone will be nuts enough to buy me it for Christmas or something.

10 Discs for such a reasonable price! The content is unusual, but looks great! I can't wait!!!

I think outside of the first movie it really was a load of crap. Really bad movies.

Same here JJJ, but I can't help but buy it (I've had the UK set on order for about a week now).

I'm looking forward to the commentaries by film critics who hated the movies! (on all three films) That will make the set just for me!
Most of my Blu-ray collection some of my UK discs aren't on their database

Oh well. I love that so much it looks so cool. I would love to buy it but that isn't going to happen. My parents think they are bad movies. But this is great for the people who are going to get the set :)

Well I know I'm probably in the minority, at least on this board, but I absolutely loved all 3 movies. I'm a little surprised they asked 3 critics who hated the movie to do commentary, though. I wonder why they opted for that. It'll sure be interesting! (Maybe that's why).

The Matrix Boxset looks great but I don't see why I should double dip for this excellent Boxset.
Who knows I might just give it as a gift to a friend or just keep it for myself. :D

Well, even if you have all 3 current Matrix movies and the Matrix Revisited and the Animatrix, it's still 3 new discs of extras, and all of the discs have better features in the new set, and I believe the transfer is better, as well.

I loved Matrix, I liked Reloaded, and I disliked Revolutions.

However, the set looks fantastic. I sold my original copies a little while ago to save up for this. The commentary with critics sounds like a load of fun - may be the first commentary I acutally listen to all the way through.

They ALL suck and Animetrix was SAD and BLOODY......and VIOLENT......Yay violence! (Jk, violence is ok).

Acording to the guy at Blockbuster, he said the Animetrix is suppose to help make the other movies make sence............I didn't watch all of it, considering.........it was those 3 I said before. I couldn't take it (for some ODD reason :? ).

I like the way they talk tho. Like m47rix i5 57upid..........hehe.....I can READ that stuff too............But yeah, they all sucked. I personally never saw them, just the video game. Yeah, it sucked.

Although I'm not a huge Matrix fan, I liked the films (especially the original, of course) enough to buy them. I guess it's time for yet another upgrade. I'll probably only go through the features once and only watch the ones related to the original repeatedly, but I still want it. The list price sweetens the deal for me: 60 bucks for 10 discs? That's a great deal. especially when you can find for probably in the 40's range thanks to Christmas sales. I'm slightly disappointed that they're not in Amarays, though, but that's just nit picking.

Extended cuts?
I can't imagine how anyone would want to subject themselves to LONGER versions of Reloaded and Revolutions. :o

As you could probably guess, I'm not a fan of this trilogy, although I thought the first Matrix and the Animatrix were incredibly cool. While a 10-disc box set does sound very cool as well, the last 3 discs sound like filler to me. I can't imagine what would be on there that wasn't already covered in the 3 x 3 hour documentaries.

I'd have to say, from the two lots of box art, the non-gift set one looks better, as the one with the statue is quite plain. A combination of the two would have been ideal.

It will be a tough call. I already own The Matrix, The Animatrix and The Matrix Revisted (doco). I'm nit sure I want to actually buy the box set that contains extended versions of films I don't like.

Extended cuts? I thought it said there wouldn't be any, as the Wachowskis are so unLucasly pleased with their films that they didn't want them.

Ok, I was going by the original specs released on the net that said:

"Matrix Reloaded Extended Version – New Cut With 55 Minutes Of New Footage Inserted Back Into The Film", but I now see they were just rumours.

Even so, god knows why you'd want to own the sequels forever.

Ok, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something. Well I'm glad the cuts aren't extended so that I can sell the ones I have now.

I wouldn't be too hasty...

"...the Wachowskis said that none of the special features from the original DVD releases of the trilogy will be reproduced except for what you find on Discs 2 and 7. You may see some of the same footage re-edited, but if you want to own all of the extras you'll need to keep your original DVDs too."

Interesting. Which discs are they referring to as the 2nd and 7th, I wonder? I must have the MTV Movie Awards parody on the Reloaded set!
