Marlon Brando, the great actor from such films as "The Godfather", "Apocalypse Now", "Guys and Dolls", and "The Island of Dr. Moreau" has passed on at age 80.

Anyone in the top 10 films of all time is immortal, but we all know how memorable Vito Corleone is. Unfortunate that Mr. Brando was so ruthlessly picked on by comedians in more recent times.

I only came to know and appreciate Brando's work in recent years, but I remember thinking that it was amazing that an actor from such classic films as "On the Waterfront" and "Streetcar Named Desire" was alive and not really at all in the limelight anymore. For someone who didn't make too many films, Brando has an amazing body of work. Three of my favorites are "The Godfather", "Apocalypse Now", and "The Freshman."

"The Godfather" is an everlasting image in cinema due to him, and he was so wonderful at doing the role for comedy in "The Freshman."

Yes, he probably wasn't all there the last few years, or maybe he was just always odd. But he was an amazing actor, and he will be missed.

I've not seen the Freshman, so I'll have to check that one out now.

As I've said many times here, The Godfather is quite possibly my favourite all-time film, so this is sad news indeed. I was only discussing (with Netty) last night how so many famous faces are dropping off these days - none of us are getting any younger.

While I never bought the whole "Brandon as the actor's actor" thing (his last 20 years of work have been patchy at best), the roles that defined him are certainly some of the best pieces of work he, or anyone else, has done. A real shame he is gone.

On a personal note, its been reported that Brando died from pulmonary fibrosis, a disease that, for a little while we, and our doctor, thought my brother was in the early stages of. We were even warned he could only have as little as 3-5 years of his life left. Thankfully, after a series of tests, it turned out to be a false alarm. My brother is now in A-1 health. After studying the condition, I can only imagine what it would be like for Brando in his final days.

Basically the lungs are filled with more and more scar tissue - the body treats the initial scar tissue as an invader and builds more scar tissue around it. This makes extracting the oxygen from the air when breathing harder and harder. The rate of this growth varies from person to person. Eventually, not enough oxygen can be absorbed into the bloodstream, resulting in many negative effects (the body's organs need oxygen to continue functioning at peak efficiency), until finally death. Pulmonary fibrosis can be inherited from certain genes, but it can also be caused by smoking or working in a dusty environment. My brother worked down a coal mine for four years.

I'm sad Brando has died, and I'm also sad he died in such a way, a slow decline for the man and one which for all purposes stopped him from taking on more acting roles in his later life. This is likely to explain his erratic roles and performances in later films

I never liked Mr.Brandos films that much but I will have to say that my pesonal favorites were On The Waterront, The GodFather Trilogy and the Fugitive Kind. R.I.P. Marlon.
