Beauty and the Beast on Broadway

Beauty and the Beast is coming to Denmark in the beginning of next year... what are your thoughts about this play, and where can I read more???

The theatre where it wil be shown, has hosted some of the high grossing Andrew Lloyd Webber plays, so I expect quite a lot... Will my expectations be fulfilled?

I'm very happy! I discovered today that in 2005/2006 Beauty and the Beast will have it's tour through The Netherlands (Dutch version). I can't wait to see it. I haven't seen the Dutch version of The Lion King, because it's too far a way (ticket + trainticket = something like €90,-/€100,-. That's too expensive for me). But Beauty and the Beast will be the National Tour of Joop van den Ende Theater Productions. So I can see it in a theater near me!

Last Tuesday, Fred Johansson and Annika Edstam, stars of the Swedish stage production of Beauty and the Beast appeared on Swedish tv.

She looks like she would make a really good Belle. Her picture looks very similar to Belle in the movie. Of course, as you said, we don't know how she sings, but I'm sure if she's getitng Belle in Beauty and the Beast, she must be good. haha.

No, seriously, that's a joke. You'll enjoy it if you like stuff along the lines of Stephen Schwartz and Andrew Lloyd Webber, neither of which produce what is considered "good" theater. It's enjoyable fluff that's all.

Yeah, I do. I've only seen them at the local theatre in my town though, nothing on Broadway yet.

I'm surprised that my local newspaper hasn't said anything about it yet. If she went to CCM, and is now on Broadway, you would think Cincinnati papers would say something.

Well, replacemetns for musicals really don't generate much publicity. It's the original Broadway cast that gets all the attention. They usually originate (or create) the roles of the characters, and they're performance is usually what future actors model theirs off of. Also, since Beauty and the Beast has been running for ages (and hogging up a beautiful theater), it's really not big news. If she had landed the part back in 1994 as the original Belle, she'd be in major newspaper headlines. I mean, even big celebrities who play in musicals aren't really mentioned. Just look at Toni Braxton. She had a stint on Aida (a Disney musical that has now closed), and she really didn't break any national or local news.

Yeah, I heard about the new Tarzan coming out. I bet that will be pretty good. I dunno know, I think there could be better Disney movies they could make into a Broadway show.

It's currently in the workshop phase of production, meaning they're working out script problems. In this case, it's probably related to how they are going to contrast the underwater/land scenes. However, a workshop doesn't necessarily mean it will ever be made. Take that back, they're PLANNING the workshop, so it will be awhile until it's fully realized, if ever. This is supposed to show that comes after Tarzan and Mary Poppins.

I agree, I think there are better films for a Broadway show. I just don't know how A Phill Collins score will work. I'm personally tired of pop scores in terms of musical theater. Who knows, though? It could end up being something brilliant like The Lion King show. Just as long as they avoid the production team of the dastardly Beauty and the Beast, I'll be fine.

Speaking of all these new shows, the folks are actually fearful that the Great White Way will turn into a mini-Disney world, and a lot of industry people have Disney on their hit lists. They breathed A HUGE SIGH of relief last September when AIDA closed. Still, if everything works out to plan, they could actually have five shows runninng simultaneiously. I'm hoping Disney is the poision that finally brings down The Phantom of the Opera.

I found this interesting bit of news on the playbill.com website. This is apparantly the description of what the producers are looking for in their Tarzan lead:

"Caught between the world of gorillas and the world of humans, he is a human raised by a family of apes in the African jungle. We must identify with him and care about him and his emotional journey. Charming, sexy, vulnerable, lots of humanity, animal-like. Physically lean but toned, a swimmer’s body — NOT a muscle man. Strong upper body strength, physical, agile, fearless, must be very comfortable with movement. His body must be at one with the environment. Will fly. Needs a terrific pop/rock singing voice."

Anyone want to give it a go? It's obvious this will be somewhat of a rock/spectacle musical, rather than a traditional one. I hope we can have more traditional stuff in the future.

I would rather see The Little Mermiad adapted to stage than Tarzan. I like The Little Mermaid show in Walt Disney World so I think they could pull it off.

Today is/was the premiere. Fot this version director Glenn Casale went back to the original story to put more depth in the show. Someone from Disney who is present at the premiere today, said that this version should have a tour through America. That good was it in his eyes. On www.beautybeast.nl you can see some photo's of the Dutch cast. And yes, our Belle is blonde... But it must be a great show from what I've seen on TV. On november 6th I'm going to see it. Can't wait!
