Nemo's Lost It; SHREK 2 the #1 Grossing Animated Movie Ever
The first Shrek has been pushed down a notch in the top-grossing animated film rankings, going from third to fourth, but you won't hear the big green ogre complaining. That's because the film doing the pushing is its sequel, DreamWorks Pictures' computer-animated comedy Shrek 2, which has become the top-grossing animated film in history (domestically) with a cumulative domestic box office gross of $346.5 million as of Saturday, June 12. The film crossed the previous record set by Finding Nemo ($339.8 million) on June 12, only its 25th day in release. The announcement was made today by DreamWorks Pictures Head of Distribution Jim Tharp.
The achievement added a new record to the already multiple record-breaking run of Shrek 2, which has shattered virtually every record for an animated film -- and several for any film in history -- since its May 19th opening. In addition to now being the top-grossing animated film of all time, Shrek 2 now holds the records for the biggest mid-week opening day for an animated film, the largest opening weekend for an animated film, the largest five-day opening for any film, the biggest single-day Saturday gross for any film, and the biggest single-day Sunday gross for any film.
In making the announcement, Jim Tharp said, "To say that we are amazed and thrilled would be a huge understatement. We have celebrated every record, but this latest hurdle -- to become the top-grossing animated film in history -- is something we hardly even imagined. Everyone at DreamWorks and PDI shares in this accomplishment. We are all very, very proud of 'Shrek 2's' extraordinary success."

What exactly are we celebrating here? The gullibility of the public? A successful but over hyped marketing campaign? Inflation at the box office? That can old rubbish can do well if dressed up in silly voices and "clever" pop-culture references? That Dreamworks were right to throw millions upon millions of dollars away on the voice artists for mimimal work?
Yes. You're right. I don't like Shrek. I hate everything it stands for!

OK, it was one thing to have Nemo take Lion King's spot (not that I really liked Lion King, but it's better than Nemo), but Shrek 2? WHAT?!?!
I can't believe it's beaten out films like The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, or even Lilo and Stitch.
Yes, Shrek 2 is probably funny, and hopefully it has what almost all Disney movies have, and Shrek 1 lacked in-HEART.

Well, it's not surprising that it beated The Little Mermaid, because at that time Disney was just beginning to go better, and Lilo & Stitch was easy to surpass.Prince Adam wrote:OK, it was one thing to have Nemo take Lion King's spot (not that I really liked Lion King, but it's better than Nemo), but Shrek 2? Gotta remember one word when these newer animated films are surpassing old ones: Inflation
If they showed straight figures on how many people walked through the door I'd be more impressed, but comparing how much the Lion King took in 1994 to Shrek in 2004 is like comparing apples and oranges. Nemo is tough too since it did well for a looooong time instead of just having an insane opening weekend.

People, remember, it took Nemo 2 months to make it to the top. This happened in LESS THAN 1 MONTH. And it's still going strong! I don't think Incredibles is even gonna come close. Heck, if this thing goes strong through July, it could be competing to be number 2 or 3 in the all time chart.
Cheers,

Well...

...that's a list of films after they've been adjusted for inflation to the present standards. Not only is Lion King still far ahead of that damn ogre, but several other old classics as well.
I agree with the sentiments expressed here - Shrek 2 is just not that good. It's an uber hyped-up juggernaut that's just spun out of control. I don't care that it's not Disney, either. The film itself is just a mediocre story with a few funny spots spattered along it (Puss-in-Boots especially), wrapped up in a thick layer of capitalistic gluttony. The commercial tie-ins alone are just insane! It's on a level I've never seen before! It's one big reason why I'm avoiding the TV right now. -_-
I have confidence that if such a schlockfest as Shrek 2 can gross so much money, then a quality, Brad Bird-directed Pixar film is sure to pull it in.

Life often leaves us standing bare, naked and dejected with a lost opportunity. Over the bleached bones and jumbled residues of numerous civilizations are written the pathetic words: "Too late."

The Incredibles is definiitely a risk, as it's the first Pixar movie to deviate from the basic formula.
"Take one part adult nostalgia and mix with equal part child's POV characters"
The Incredibles is different, and although they hit Point A with superheroes, the choice of super-powered humans as protagonists don't hit the same "child's POV characters" like bugs, fish, monsters under the bed or toys did.
Those gave us a peek at "another world" which engrossed viewers of all ages, and hooked the adults hard on the nostalgia angle.
I don't doubt The Incredibles will be popular, but due to the lack of a "new world to explore" for kids, there's no way it matches Nemo.
