Dumbo Discussion
Again taking my cue from DDMan26's Snow White thread...
Now that Fantasia discussion has died off, I thought we could discuss the next animated classic, Dumbo!

It's a small cartoon and a lot of fun. A disney film doesnt have to big grand and epic to be a classic like the fairy tales, because Dumbo has all the qualities and its a small production compared to Snow White or Cinderella. But it definitely ranks up there. Baby Mine is beautiful, I thought that made the film more emotional than Bambi. "It's a complete joy" (to quote some of the cliché reviews Disney always has all over their dvd's

Dumbo is one of the shortest Disney animated film.
I really enjoyed watching Dumbo it's very sad and emotional film.
Baby of Mine song is very heart warming and touching!!!
The best part of the movie I like is when Dumbo dreams about the dancing elephants.
This is a very powerful and strong film that will be exciting for generations to come.

You're entitled to an opinion, so it can't really be "wrong", can it?
I used to think more or less the same thing the first time I saw Dumbo quite a few years ago. I found it "absurd" (in a negative sense) and a waste of screen time - it was sort of a step out of the story. However, later I've come to appreciate this section a lot - just like I appreciate most of the other of Disney's "surreal" musical segments from the 40s.

I have only recently begun to appreciate Dumbo as the great classic that it is. I used to think that the animation was not that good but now I realise how much dedication it must have taken to visualise the emotions that the characters go trough. It really is one of the most emotional and dramatic stories that has ever been told in a Disney animated movie.

Although the two sequences are very similar and may cause you to think of one or the other, they are two completely different melodies. "Pink Elephants on Parade" was written by Frank Churchill and Ned Washington, while "Heffalumps and Woozles" was written by Richard and Robert Sherman.Ludwig Von Drake wrote:... Pink Elephants which Disney used in Winnie the Pooh as Huphuluphms and Woozels ...

From what I understand, it already has one. I don't own it, though. There's been rumors of an upgraded version of Dumbo for a long time. I don't think it's a question of if, but of when. That's why I haven't bought it yet.Ciaobelli wrote:As a kid that pink elephant scene freaked me out. Is it the one where those pink elephants skate and all that? Is Dumbo gonna get a decent release?
I haven't seen Dumbo since June of '03, and even then it was on VHS. I had been in the WDW parks all day, and it was about 1 am, so we came back and I fell asleep. Before that, it had been a long time. From what I remember, though, I liked it, but it wasn't one of my favorites. "Baby Mine" is an incredibly touching, song, though. "When I See An Elephant Fly" has some great wordplay, too.
I used to have this giant Dumbo face that went over my showerhead when I was little, and the water came out of his trunk, and the soap and shampoo sat in his ears. Did anyone else have one of these?

That raises an excellent question. Can we look forward to "B-releases" (I say that loosely... last year's B was superior to the A) to accompany the spring Platinums too? I hope so!

Dumbo - The Crying Scene
Hi
I have a big request from many German Disney fans, maybe somebody can help.
In Dumbo there is a scene that doesn't exist in the German version, well the reason for this is about censorship and selling the movie to younger consumers ... I cannot explain that exactly in English .. anyway
In this scene one of the Elephants hits the ground and starts crying after the pyramid of elephants had lost the balance.
Although the scene is only 4 seconds long, it would be very interesting to see that scene. Maybe somebody could make some still shots from that scene ... I'm so curious about it.

DUMBO censored worldwide on current DVD/video versions ??
It is said that the original version of Disneys DUMBO had a scene, which is cut at least in European DVD/video versions of the film today.
Originally, when the elephant tower crashs down, you can see one of the elephant cows hitting on her trunk towards the ground, distorting her face and tears dropping out of her eye. This scene shall have a total 4 seconds.
Now I heard, that this scene is even misssing in current region 1 DVD releases. Allegedly it was still present in the US video release from the 80s. Can anybody confirm or disprove ? So what's about this scene - worldwide censorship or just a rumour, as it seems to be nobody wrote exactly about it on the internet so far ?
Has anybody ever seen this scene and/or could provide screenshots ? Thanks for your help !
