What Disney toys did you have (or want) as a child?

Post by UmbrellaFish »

I always say I own more Disney merchandise as an adult than I ever did as a child. And while I think that’s certainly true, I did own a few Disney toys. I’ve been feeling nostalgic lately, and it’s Christmastime so I thought I’d share some things I remember having, and I’d like to see what you had, too!

Hug and Glow Baby Mickey: https://ebay.us/m/AGnTVR

Mickey’s nightcap was long gone by the time I really remember him. My sister was two years younger than me and she had a matching Minnie Mouse, in pink.

Aladar Hatchling toy: https://youtu.be/6wCD3P1o18M?si=_Pr0swSaXsXDuGlL

I’m pretty sure I had this, or something similar. There’s new, much more advanced toys out nowadays that are kinda similar for the Jurassic Park movie series. But even cooler!

And then of course, all the McDonald’s toys… some ones I remember: the Hercules toy plates and cups, the Dinosaur hand puppets!!!, the 100 Years of Magic collectibles.

I’m sure I had more, I’ll have to think on some of these…

I was always into books and records when I was a kid rather than toys. When I was 14, all I wanted was that coffee table book The Art of Walt Disney. It was $99 and I told my parents I would expect nothing else if that’s what they were able to get for me. I really appreciate my parents’ sacrifice to get me that book especially when I looked up that $99 is worth $722 in 2025 dollars.
I still have that book on my library shelf over 50 years later. It’s a beautiful tome.

What a brilliant topic, UmbrellaFish! From what I can remember as a child, I had a Roger Rabbit toy, some Mickey and Donald toys, a Thumper plush and a Baloo plush. I remember wanting a Bambi plush. I remember having a Jafar McDonalds-figure that I gave away to an acquaintance and from 101 Dalmatians, I had some McDonalds toys. From The Lion King and Pocahontas, I owned the collectible figures and the McDonalds, but I remember that I wanted the plushes of The Lion King and the dolls from Pocahontas (and the plushes of Meeko and Percy). From Toy Story, I had the McDonalds toys. From Hunchback, I owned the collectible toys, the dolls and the McDonald figures. But I remember that I wanted the Once Upon a Time Playsets of various Disney movies, too.

I love this topic. When I was a kid, I had of course the Mattel Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, and Little Mermaid lines of dolls. Cinderella in all her outfits, the Prince, and Lady Tremaine and Fairy Godmother heads with costumes you could put on any doll. You could Velcro rip the pink dress into the pink rags. Even had a "bubble ballroom" that was part of the line, that came with a pink wand and tiara. You could turn the floor around to make Cinderella and the Prince dance, and I guess it blew bubbles out of one part, for some reason lol. It wasn't the "Sing Sweet Nightingale" scene! I always wanted a coach to go with everything, but alas, nothing but a generic non-Disney pink coach was I able to find to go with my dolls. Sleeping Beauty's eyes would sleep with cold water and wake with warm, and she had pink and blue versions of her princess dress if you turned the skirt inside out and put on the other bodice. I think I had Phillip, but don't know about Maleficent's head with costume... No fairies. Had Ariel but no Ursula. Well, except...

I had the Mattel Ursula and Maleficent Signature dolls, meaning collector dolls. As an adult, I got Cinderella's Signature doll as well.

As a kid I also had the Once Upon a Time playsets for Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, and Pinocchio. I had a Cinderella and Prince and Sleeping Beauty and Phillip dancing figures (you just turned the bottom they were standing on to make them dance, similar to the bubble ballroom).

I also had the Cinderella tiny collection castle and chateau. The castle was awesome, so many details and ways to play with it (including, again, a floor that turned so they danced!), and I loved how it looked, not realizing till later it was based on La Chateau de la Belle au Bois Dormant in Disneyland Paris instead of Cinderella's movie castle.

I also had a Pinocchio plush my dad and brother surprised me with and I took to bed nightly to cuddle with.

As a teen, when Cinderella came to DVD, I kind of wanted her twinkle lights doll and carriage that came out that year. I had never had a true Disney Cinderella carriage. But I thought I was too old for it.

As an adult, I have since gotten the transforming pumpkin carriage and swirling lights doll in this commercial: Cinderella Pumpkin Carriage and Swirling Lights doll. So it's like the pumpkin really turns into the coach, and like Cinderella's dress transformation on a doll! I also have a slightly different Disney Cinderella transforming pumpkin carriage where you just turn a piece of a pumpkin shell around the carriage to transform it to a coach and back.

I also had a Cinderella plastic figure as a kid that when you unlocked the bottom of it with a little key, it had fake jewelry inside.

I had another Sleeping Beauty doll as a kid, the Sparkle Eyes one.

I also had as a kid an Ariel singing necklace, where it sings Ariel's "Ah ah ah", in pink. I wanted a gold Ursula necklace but it was the closest I could get. Now they have a gold, glowing(!) singing necklace that looks more like it(click here!), plus the live-action version (click here!). I bought both as an adult!

I think that covers it. That is all I can remember!

I wanted that Aurora "water makes her eyes close" doll, and the similar Barbie one, but I never got them. I wanted the Pocahontas doll that had Meeko braiding her hair, but I never got that either.

I had many Disney toys growing up. I had the Ariel and Eric "Barbie-style" dolls, Aladdin and Jasmine "Barbie-style" dolls ("Water Jewel Magic"), little plastic toys (Bambi, Goofy holding a bowling ball from Burger King, human and mermaid Ariel; Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin movie figurine playsets), I'm pretty sure I had a Donald Duck plush, Winnie the Pooh plush, Burger King puppets (Rex, Quasimodo, Esmeralda), art sets (The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King), trading cards, so many books (especially the book plus red cassette tape combos), a record set with music from Silly Symphonies through I think Pete's Dragon; I still have the accompanying book).

Hi! The art sets:
TLM:

This may have been the TLK one:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/326005589385?c ... 47c6d56d2c

I thought I had a B&tB one, but I can't think of what kind it was.

I totally had more Happy Meal and Burger King toys that I forgot to mention! I remember the Snow White ones.

The TLM art set link didn’t work for me, but The Lion King one did. So it was like painting or coloring pictures?

I wished I had the transforming Evil Queen to Witch toy from McDonald’s when I was a kid.

Our house has a lot of stuffed characters, plus some plastic figures. Many of these are now played with by our family's next generation.

I remember growing up we had the CD-rom game companion for The Little Mermaid: Return to the Sea. I had to dive a bit into the world of Google before I was sure I found it, but as far as I can tell it was this one.

I remember also my grandma had Ariel's Story Studio on her PC, and for a good two years, trips to grandmas were always marked by getting to run through the entire sequence.

I wish I still had more toys from when I was a kid; I had the Queen toy.

PatchofBlue, that's cool that The Little Mermaid was an important part of your home and Grandma's house! We had the THoND/TLK "sampler" CD ROM growing up. Good times.

It's actually funny because this is the grandma who hates Ariel, for all the reasons why grandmas tend to hate someone like Ariel, but she absolutely indulged her grandson's little "crush" on the mermaid, and did all through my time growing up.
