While not wholly admitting that the threequel will be entering production, Pixar's Chief Creative Officer, Pete Docter, has been considering the next steps. In an interview with Fandango after D23, Docter admitted that they are still planning where the franchise might go in the next movie.

"We're in the same place we were after [Inside Out]. We're just like, 'Okay, well if we were going to do something, what would it be?' And we're kind of just thinking of ideas. Who knows? I would love for it to feel as though out of this vast world we only saw like three percent and the rest of it is still out there. So, there's a lot to explore, a lot of things that we played with in the first movie or the second movie that didn't work for story reasons — [they] didn't fit thematically — so we have a lot to play with."

I'm sure they're thinking through different stories for Inside Out 4 and 5, too. This franchise was always going to go long, just like Toy Story. I don't think they'll jump ahead through Riley's life too fast for that reason; I expect it'll be sort of disappointing like Incredibles 2 in that way. At least, I had hoped they would jump to Violet in college / Dash in high school or something like that, and instead it picks up almost two seconds where the first ended. Especially here, they'll need to keep Riley relatively young for the stories to work, they're not exactly going to set a future film with her as middle-aged or getting married / having children or in a nursing home.

Whether that means an Inside Out 3 will be on the cards remains to be seen – but given the reception to the second film, there’s certainly an appetite. “People are pretty open. They’re open to doing another film,” Mann says. “They want to make sure that we do it justice. But people are excited for seeing Riley’s life — her whole life. They want to see Riley grow up.” As of yet, though, “we haven’t had any talks. Mainly because the movie came out, and I took a break,” Mann laughs. “But there are so many great ideas that we weren’t able to get into this film, or the original. I really hope those ideas have a home one day.”
