Your favourite CANCELLED Disney animated movie

Post by The Disneynerd »

Hey guys!
What fascinates me the most about Disney (animation) are mostly the things that could have been and discovering more about them over time! So I thought it would be interesting to discuss what cancelled disney movie property (that was confirmed to be in development) was it that you think interested you the most and would still love Disney to release? :P doesnt have to be only Disney animation. Cant wait to read your thoughts and additions :)

I can begin:
I would have LOVED to see My Peoples made! Besides of the Romeo and Juliet side story, it seemed EXTREMELY Unique in both the story (atleast the bit that was revealed of it) and the animation! Even the CG doll characters like Angel and Co looked really good still to this day! Unique Dolls that are posessed by ghosts would have been such a unique concept for a disney animated movie! Could have been maybe a smash hit, guess we will never know :( Disney if u r reading this its not too late to invite Barry Cook back to the studio as director to finish it please (+ Millions of dollars in damages because they cancelled his personal creation in favor of Chicken  )

Also I was a huge sucker for Gigantic of course, not the version shown in D23 but the other one that seemed to be more related to the source material.

And as much as I love Tangled, i would have LOVED to see Rapunzel Unbraided, such a unique concept! (pls ignore that Shrek exists :P ) but i mean the aspect of 2 teens of today getting transported into a fairytale world and their interaction with it. We know how it ends with Claire and Vince falling in love and finding back home to San Francisco but the scenes in the middle of the movie?? I have no idea how it could play out and what the gang does and I would have loved to see it, and THE ANIMATION ARGHHH probably would have been only the most beautiful animated movie to date. I know Enchanted has basically the same concept but still.I love Tangled and Enchanted but I would have maybe preferred this over them... of course Glen Keanes dark version would have been also interesting, but I personally think its basically the same as Tangled only more serious and gloomy so nothing fully new storywise
Songs that slap right now:

4. Get this right! (Frozen 2)
5. Stuck on you (Lionel Richie)
6. Taste (๐–ฒ๐–บ๐–ป๐—‹๐—‚๐—‡๐–บ๐–บ๐–บ๐–บ)
7. Beauty & le bรฉast (๐–ขeline Dion & Peabo Bryson)

Sameeee :D I was so hyped for Gigantic so I was really sad when it got cancelled and My Peoples had a really interesting concept and (in my opinion) was set in the most underrated region in America, Appalachia. It shouldโ€™ve been the first 3d (or maybe 3d/2d) animated movie that the studio made instead of Chicken Little.

Iโ€™m also interested in how King of the Elves and Cosmic 3000 wouldโ€™ve played our since theyโ€™re concepts are very different that usually Disney Animated Movie. King of the Elves, because itโ€™s premise about an old man being mistaken as the elvesโ€™ king is very interesting. The elvesโ€™ character designs are very beautiful and etherial though that varies in the concept art that some artists released. Itโ€™s vibe wouldโ€™ve been similar to The Fox and The Hound wherein the movie starts out as cozy and chill and then during the middle of the movie and the near end, it wouldโ€™ve had a darker tone. Cosmic 3000, because itโ€™s zany and similar to the Pixar-esque movies that the studio made before. The character designs for the aliens are cartoony yet they still fit in the Disney style well and there wouldโ€™ve been a human character that got mixed up in their space racing which wouldโ€™ve made a unique dynamic between the two species. That, and they donโ€™t usually make movies or protagonists that are aliens aside from Lilo and Stich, but that is mostly set in Hawaii.
Favorite Things Right Now:
1. Kpop Demon Hunters (Movie)
2. Superman (Movie)
3. Devil In Disguise by Marino (Song)
4. The Fantastic Four: First Steps (Movie)
5. Monster Hunter Rise (Video Game)

Swan Lake.

Glen Keane's Rapunzel.

The Snow Queen - the original idea which was more faithful to the original tale, with hand drawn animation and Andreas Deja animating the Snow Queen voiced by Bette Midler, and with music by Alan Menken.

Mort.

As an Appalachian, I would have loved to have seen My Peoples brought to fruition.

Mort sounded like it could have been something really special in the canon.

Fraidy Cat was supposed to be a satire of Hitchcock movies by Musker and Clements and oh how I wish that was made!

I have to go with Treasure Planet 2, even though it was a cancelled animated sequel. I would have loved to have seen more of Jim Hawkins. He's one of my favorite male Disney Characters.

All three of these for me too, plus Kingdom of the Sun, Aida, Fantasia World, Who Discovered Roger Rabbit, The Nightingale, Brizzi Brothers' Don Quixote, Puss in Boots, A Princess of Mars, The Odyssey, Marco Polo, Sinbad the Sailor (although I do love DreamWorks' version), Tam Lin, Lafiya, The Song of Sundiata, Which Witch?, Scheherazade, Ramayana, The Scarlet Pimpernel, Pygmalion (before it got turned into Wild Life), King Lear (before it got turned into Brother Bear), Tim Riceโ€™s Dragons, Dale Wasserman's Baba Yaga, A Song of the Sea, Around the World in 80 Days, The Flame of Peace, Selkies, Chris Buck's Jack and the Beanstalk, Sherman Brothers' Wandering Star and probably more I can't recall right now.

This is my favorite topic! It's hard to make a list because I was looking forward to everything (back when there was a lot of info online during production)...or the movies from "before my time" would have been great to have seen (like Chanticleer).

I think Mort could have been super promising. Ken Anderson's Catfish Bend I think could have been good (IIRC the story just wasn't coming together cohesively). I remember both Fraidy Cat & King of the Elves sounding promising; I like the concept art that's online. I'm sure Roger Allers' Tam Lin would have been epic. Including Pixar, I love the concept art released for Newt. Swan Lake- I'm definitely curious as to how that would have turned out.

I love what I've seen for My Peoples; the artwork is spectacular, and the mixing of 2D/3D...sucks they killed the Florida studio.

I am curious about how The Abandoned (about a boy who turned into a cat) would have turned out.

I personally feel like the Purdum reel of B&tB, Kingdom of the Sun, Sweating Bullets, A Day with Wilbur Robinson (before Lasseter came on board), American Dog, The Frog Prince,Rapunzel/Unbraided, Joe Jump, The Snow Queen, etc., are so fascinating, because for years these films were worked on and then retooled; I'm always happy to read tidbits of what could have been.

The Search for Mickey Mouse/In Search of Mickey Mouse sounded epic.

Giants/Gigantic...so many iterations and they just couldn't make it work. It's so interesting.

Andreas Deja, on his blog, has posted artwork from Mistress Masham's Repose; that could have been good...

I mean, everything could have been good...

Oh didnt knew the location was based on Appalachia, sounds neat! :)

Oh totally forgot about that one lol. Totally agree the concept art ive seen for it looks stunning (Aaron Blaises concept art is so beautiful)! There is this animated show from the 2010s called "The woodlies" i watched as a kid and it makes me think a bit of KotE, also its animation reminds me of Wish :P

Mort.
The traditional Snow Queen approach seemed like a classic in the making, normally I dislike it when some would change the plot and message of the original tale, but Im really glad with what weve got with Frozen. And who knows, its big distinction of the original could make it maybe even possible that someday we might get a faithful adaptation out of it, but I dont really mind.
Mort is also really interesting! Death as one of the main cast would have been a big shake and something really fresh, I think Disney tried out this loose idea of an animated grim reaper as the main character in the short "the Race" and I remember really liking it! Makes me really think Death could have been a really charismatic likeable character!

Don Quixote sounds EXTREMELY interseting!!! Disney was really struggeling with this one for decades! And I think their last approach for it would have been really cool, saw the concept art and stuff and the Brizzi Brothers wanted a really mature and dark direction with it, where they even scared the coworkers with their drawings rotfl . And its too dark retelling leading to its cancellation makes me really sad, because I especially love the animated movies who are really authentic and dont play it too save and polished just so they can get toddlers as part of theri audience. I love comedies, but im OBSESSED with dark scary tales :milkbuds:

Completely agree UmbrellaFish! Not one of Musker and Clements Movies failed to impress me, all of their main characters are so likeable and relatable imo (Aladdin and Ariel being in my top 5 favs). Their take on classic thrillers would have been so cool! Loved the concept art ive seen for it. But who knows, if they went along with it, maybe we would have never gotten Princess and the Frog, but still such a pity

Regarding Disney sequels, I would add the original Atlantis 2, it would have been the first real sequel by WDAS i think and they could have extended the worldbuilding and Kida exploring and interacting with the world above. So cool that the directors already had the rough idea of the sequel in mind before even finishing the first one, thats how you know they really wanted to expant the lore and were passionate about it. :D

KotS sounded also great, but It was basically an adaption of Prince and the Pauper, and I LOVE Emperors new groove so its not such a loss for me personally
Sotiris wrote: โ†‘Wed Sep 27, 2023 9:36 pm Pygmalion (before it got turned into Wild Life), King Lear (before it got turned into Brother Bear),
Wow I thought Brother Bear and Wild Life where created from scratch as original ideas. :o But I have to say Wild Lifes adult like humour really fascinated me, but with the storyproblems it suffred it was probably better it got canned.
Sotiris wrote: โ†‘Wed Sep 27, 2023 9:36 pm Chris Buck's Jack and the Beanstalk
This made me think, if Frozen wouldnt have been this huge smash hit, maybe Chris Buck would have supported Nathan Greno in early 2014 or could have stepped in as co director as the movie had story problems when it was later retooled, instead of working on Frozen 2. I think Chris Buck really gets how to craft and adapt classic tales, would have been really interesting to see how his version could have been

I searched for the tale when I found out here that Disney was planning that and its indeed really epic. They could have had such a big climax when Tamlin gets turned into every dangerous animal and Janet having to prove her love to him. Sounded really cool, still noone thought of doing an adaption out of it so Disney could still claim it.
I have to confess maybe Swan Lake was indeed a bit too similar to Little Mermaid so I dont really mind the cancellation and therefore I have my Barbie SwanLake with probably one of the most beautiful costume designs :milkbuds:

Treasure Planet 2. Just because some of the designs were so interesting. Would've wanted more of Jim Hawkins in the world.

Let's see--Kingdom of the Sun (although part of me is glad we have the film as it is, too), Mort (even if it was a weird concept), Glen Keane's Rapunzel. Possibly Gigantic if they were going to use those designs we saw a little while back (the TSitS-esque ones). The version of The Rescuers that would've had Cruella rather than Medusa. A M&C version of Swan Lake--although I'm glad they went with TLM rather than it if we only had to have one water-related fairy tale from them.
