How very clever of Disney to mislead us (me, at least). The back cover of MMIB&W states that the set begins with the landmark debut, "Steamboat Willie" and ends with "Mickey's Service Station," the last of his black and white shorts. What they did not say is that there were many B&W shorts in between that were not in the set.
What would this wretched world be like without Disney?

2099net :o I can not believ it!!! You skipped over several that Pete was in. The first 2 that jump out are: The Galloping Gaucho and The Karnival Kid

Sulley I believe that Mickey's Kangaroo was the last black and White Mickey short. Mickey's Service Station is NOT the last! (I have not actually seen this cartoon myself, but from what I have heard, this is the case)

Also, where's Mickey and the Beanstalk on your list.

I've updated the list cross-referencing www.bcdb.com as well as the teemings site.

Does The Karnival Kid feature Pete? I can't remember. Neither site lists a Pete appearance. I'll watch it tonight and update as appropriate.

I didn't list Mickey and the Beanstalk as it's part of "Fun and Fancy Free".

As for the order of the shorts - I got this list from the book "Mickey Mouse: The Evolution, The Legend, The Phenomenon" - but as seen with Steamboat Willie and Plane Crazy production order is not always release order. I honestly don't know the correct order.

It looks like, given the number of Black and White Shorts Mickey Mouse In Black and White Vol II may be a 3 disc set!

Now I've looked up Mellerdrammer (translation: Melodrama) I can't see Disney ever releasing this short. And there's possibly a lot more like it.

What do you guys think? Will we see ALL of the black and white Mickey Mouse cartoon shorts?

(It is right next to the Lowes Cineplex, and I was waiting for Finding Nemo to start) Well I went back 2 days ago and they were completely out  ! I was ready to buy it too :( . This isn't discontinued is it?

Awsome. Thanks for the list. What a great reference. If we can get lists for the other shorts, I smell a new section on the site, with printable, checkable lists!

It would be nice to see them all together.

But it is more of a money earner if they can release them a few at a time, or quite possibly an 'ultimate complete deluxe set' a few years down the track.

I woke up on the cynical side of the bed this morning.

Looks like the possibly upcoming "Mickey Mouse in Living Color 2" (I think it's more or less official) will probably contain the rest of his shorts and featurettes. Since it doesn't look like quite as many as were on the first disc, I hope we might get a really thorough documentary of sorts. That would be amazing. With as few celebrities as possible, y'know...

Well I found the book again today. The last copy, and I read it as I waited in line for my ticket that would allow me to purchase Harry Potter year 5, and I came to the conclusion, that as nice as it is, it wasn't worth me spending $35 that I really didn't have. Though it would make a nice present  hmmmm... must somehow leak this to family member...

I was wondering if anyone knows if the 1953 short, 'The Simple Things' is available on anything?

As the Teemings website points out it was "The last Mickey cartoon made for thirty years until his reincarnation in "Mickey's Christmas Carol" in 1984." I assume this was last Mickey theatrically though?

Very keen to see this now (my new 'questy thing' aka obsession).

Pete in the Karnival Kid is actually a character called "Kat Nipp" - who is thinner than Pete (but does look incredibly like Pete on a few face only shots) and still smokes a cigar.

According to Teemings, Kat Nipp was
Kat Nipp a country bumpkin type who appeared in some early 1931 comics as well as his few animated appearances. Ultimately superseded as main villain by Pete, who was a more interesting character anyway.
* The Opry House
* When the Cat's Away
* The Karnival Kid
but I'm sure Kat Nipp and Pete are releated. Maybe as well as having an "Uncle Pegleg" the current Pete has an "Uncle Kat Nipp"? I'd love to see Pete and Kat Nipp team up in "House of Mouse"!

Yeah, I think that they will. Maltin addressed the racial thing on the first Mickey B&W set, at least I believe it was that one. I think they should have just released them all in chronological order instead of picking ones here and there. Maybe they are saving the more 'contreversial' cartoons for the last volume of the Mickey B&W sets?

Reading the summary for that Mickey Mouse short though, it sounds like the contents could be a lot more "contraversial" than the quick "blackface" gags in the cartoons released on the first set.

Normally I don't care about stuff like this - what is done is done and these examples teach us "our" social history, something I think is important. And I abhor the concept of editing or witholding a film release based on it's content. But I think should I see the cartoon in question, I might find it offensive; or at the very least distasteful. Coming from a white Anglo-Saxon living in the UK, I can only imagine how such a release would go down in America - introduction or not. While I would like to see the cartoons released as a matter of principle, the presentation of the cartoons will be very, very important, and I don't think an introduction alone will be sufficient. I would probably suggest an optional commentary track where the issues could be discussed as they appeared in the cartoon.

"Trader Mickey" also sounds like a cartoon that is unlikely to be released.

They would certainly be more contraversial than Song of the South, and that remains locked in the Disney Vault, seemingly with no sign of release (not even an early release for good behaviour!)

The following are on the first Color Volume

The Band Concert
Mickey's Garden
Mickey's Fire Brigade
Pluto's Judgement Day
On Ice
Mickey's Polo Team
Orphan's Picnic
Mickey's Grand Opera
Thru The Mirror
Mickey's Rival
Moving Day
Alpine Climbers
Mickey's Circus
Mickey's Elephant
The Worm Turns
Magician Mickey
Moose Hunters
Mickey's Amateurs
Hawaiian Holiday
Clock Cleaners
Lonesome Ghosts
Boat Builders
Mickey's Trailer
The Whalers
Mickey's Parrot
The Brave Little Tailor

plus the Easter Egg "Mickey's Surprise Party" - a short sponsored by Nabisco and virtually a commercial for their products.

The second set is expected to include all of the listed shorts from 1939 onwards, including the longer featurettes "Mickey's Christmas Carol" and "The Prince and the Pauper". This is based on a few brief comments made by Maltin at various times. However this is not confirmed.

Several Things...

If they are going to put in A christmas Carol, why not include Sorcerers's Apprentice and Mickey and the Beanstalk? I don't care if they were small parts of other movies, they are individual shorts in "package" films, and could certainly be taken out and included, or atleast, have a "Mickey in the Movies" set, where they include Christmas Carol, Sorcerer's Apprentice, Beanstalk, and any others I can not think of. I personally do NOT want to buy Fun and Fancy free just for that cartoon, and, well I don't actually care about Sorcer's Apprentis, but it should be included all the same. I WANT ALL the Mickey cartoons in ONE place... Now I realize it would be 5 different treasures sets, but they will be next to eack other and it beats rumaging around, in other DVD's to find the Mickey Segments...

As I have stated before, in a thread about song of the south... If you think you will be offended or whatever JUST DON'T SEE IT!!!! There is no reason that any of these cartoons should be permantely vaulted, and I put my faith in Maltin and all the archival people and such that they will deliver all 40 remaining BW shorts, otherwise why let the people know they are out there?

I mean they would release the last 40 BW shorts on one tin right?... :(

Edit - added "NOT"

Image Sorry if I seemed a bit Image in my last post, but I feel the same way about my Mickey  and Donald :donald: cartoons as I do the Sleeping Beauty and eventual Aladdin DVD's. These are all very important to me, and I want to get what I, as a fan, deserve: THE BEST!!!! I don't want to be denied cartoons, because they conflict with what is politically correct today, but may not be tomarrow, or because of whatever else. I want all of these DVD's to be special and include everything possible... I personally wouldn't be opposed to 3 or even 4 disc Platinums and I don't really know where I was going with this, but hopefully you understand :) ... I'm a very passionate person with very strong feelings

...Which may or may not be good thing

What is MICKEY'S KANGAROO? And why would they skip it if they were doing chronological order on the Living Color set?
