Indian Princess Musical In Works At Disney; ‘Bend It Like Beckham’s Gurinder Chadha To Direct & Produce

EXCLUSIVE: We understand that Disney has commissioned an original musical feature from Bend It Like Beckham filmmaker Gurinder Chadha and Paul Mayeda Berges, inspired by a dynamic princess from Indian history.

Both will write the pic, and Chadha also will direct and produce. The plot remains under wraps, but we hear that the project is under the umbrella of Sean Bailey, President of Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Production.

From the thread title, I was hoping this was going to be a WDAS project. I suppose it'll be worth seeing anyway, as a musical, but I would've preferred if it was an animated musical.

“Let me tell you, it’s not easy writing a Disney princess movie,” said Gurinder Chadha about her new original music feature about a dynamic princess from Indian history that is in the works with Disney. “It’s a very hard thing to do because there are certain rules you have to follow and you also don’t want to repeat yourself. I don’t want to make Mulan again for example, I want to do my own thing. But at the same time there are very strong Disney princesses out there so to do something different but still within the genre, it’s an interesting balance to explore as a creator.”

Chadha, who was at the Red Sea International Film Festival this week with a screening of her global sensation Bend It Like Beckham, which is 20 years-old this year told Deadline’s Red Sea Studio that when Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Production President Sean Bailey approached her about the idea for an Indian princess movie, she said, “Hell yeah! That’s me!”

The charismatic writer-director is currently writing the script with her husband and writing partner Paul Mayeda Berges and will produce the project with Lindy Goldstein with Disney’s VP of production Jessica Virtue across the live-action title as well. “Together all of us are really shaping this story which, I hope once we’ve got to a good stage, we’re ready to share.”

Chadha talked at length to delegates about her career thus far [...] as well as her recently announced upcoming feature project from Disney about an Indian princess. She has penned the first draft with Mayeda Berges and producing with Lindy Goldstein and Jessica Virtue. Chadha admits she put herself forward for the latest Snow White movie with Rachel Zegler and while she got down to the last two, she didn’t get the gig. A few months later she got a call from Sean Bailey who said, “The time has come for us to make an Indian princess movie and you’re the person to do it.” They’ve delivered the first draft and while Chadha admits it’s a challenge to make something that fits the four-quadrant Disney brand, she’s happy the story “is not just about the prince anymore – it’s about the princess.”
