Billboard's Top Disney Songs

Post by Sotiris »

The top-performing songs from WDAS movies according to Billboard charts.
Billboard’s Greatest of All-Time Disney songs ranking is based on weekly performance on the Hot 100 (from its inception on Aug. 4, 1958, through Jan. 15, 2022) and comprises songs that appear in theatrically-released films via Walt Disney Animation Studios. Songs are ranked based on an inverse point system, with weeks at No. 1 earning the greatest value and weeks at lower spots earning the least. Due to changes in chart methodology over the years, eras are weighted differently to account for chart turnover rates during various periods. Songs are ranked based on a formula blending performance.

Our listing is led by “Can You Feel the Love Tonight,” Elton John’s recording of the love theme from the 1994 Disney epic The Lion King. The song spent 26 weeks on the Hot 100 and peaked at No. 4, while helping the accompanying soundtrack top the Billboard 200 for 10 weeks and eventually earn a diamond certification from the RIAA. Just below it is another romantic ballad from the ’90s: “A Whole New World (Aladdin’s Theme),” performed by Peabo Bryson and Regina Belle, which became the only song from an animated Disney movie to top the Hot 100 in early 1993.

The biggest Disney song from the 21st century is found at No. 3 on our listing, with Idina Menzel’s rendition of “Let It Go” from Frozen. Menzel’s version of the song hit No. 5 in 2014 — while pop star Demi Lovato’s re-recording of the megaballad also reached the top 40, hitting No. 38. (Lovato’s version of the song ranks at No. 10 on our listing.) Moana, from 2016, also sees its main theme represented by a pair of recordings on our list, with Auli’i Cravalho’s version of “How Far I’ll Go” landing at No. 12 and Alessia Cara’s rendition falling in at No. 16.

Meanwhile, Encanto already appears with four different songs, led of course by “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” at No. 11. “Surface Pressure” appears below it at No. 18, and the top 25 is rounded out by “The Family Madrigal” (Stephanie Beatriz, Olga Merediz & Encanto Cast, new at No. 62 on this week’s Hot 100) at No. 24 and “What Else Can I Do?” (Diane Guerrero & Stephanie Beatriz, a No. 67 debut on this week’s Hot 100) at No. 25.

Soundtracks of animated films that hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart.
The soundtrack to the Walt Disney animated musical film Encanto surges to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart (dated Jan. 15), as the set jumps 7-1 in its sixth week on the list. It’s the first soundtrack to hit No. 1 in more than two years – since Disney’s own Frozen II chilled atop the list for one week, on the chart dated Dec. 14, 2019. Encanto is just the sixth animated film soundtrack to hit No. 1 since the Billboard 200 began regularly publishing on a weekly basis in 1956. Encanto follows Frozen II (one week at No. 1, 2019), Frozen (13 weeks, 2014), Jack Johnson’s Curious George (one, 2006), Pocahontas (one, 1995) and The Lion King (10, 1994-95).

"We Don’t Talk About Bruno" keeps climbing the charts.
“We Don’t Talk About Bruno,” by Carolina Gaitán, Mauro Castillo, Adassa, Rhenzy Feliz, Diane Guerrero, Stephanie Beatriz and the Encanto Cast, ascends 5-4 for a new Hot 100 highpoint. It drew 29 million streams (up 15%) and tops Streaming Songs for a second week and sold 8,000 (up 10%) and pushes 6-3 on Digital Song Sales.

“Bruno,” from the Encanto soundtrack, which ranks at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 a week after becoming just the sixth animated film soundtrack ever to top the ranking, is now tied for the second-highest rank for a song from a Disney animated film, dating to the list’s August 1958 start. It trails only Peabo Bryson and Regina Belle’s “A Whole New World,” from Aladdin (No. 1, one week, March 1993), and matches the No. 4 highs for Elton John’s “Can You Feel the Love Tonight,” from The Lion King (August 1994), and Vanessa Williams’ “Colors of the Wind,” from Pocahontas (August 1995). One other song from a Disney animated film has hit the top five: Idina Menzel’s “Let It Go,” from Frozen (No. 5, April 2014).

“We Don’t Talk About Bruno,” from Disney’s Encanto, makes a magical move to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart. The ensemble song – by Carolina Gaitán, Mauro Castillo, Adassa, Rhenzy Feliz, Diane Guerrero, Stephanie Beatriz and the Encanto Cast – rises from the Hot 100’s runner-up spot and becomes just the second No. 1 ever from a Disney animated film. “Bruno” also marks the first Hot 100 leader for the song’s sole writer, Lin-Manuel Miranda. He and Mike Elizondo co-produced it and earn their first and second trips to No. 1, respectively, in those roles.

“We Don’t Talk About Bruno,” from Disney’s Encanto, casts its spell atop the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart for a second week. The ensemble song – by Carolina Gaitán, Mauro Castillo, Adassa, Rhenzy Feliz, Diane Guerrero, Stephanie Beatriz and the Encanto Cast (all singing as the characters that they voice in the movie) – becomes the first song from a Disney animated film to lead the Hot 100 for multiple weeks. It one-ups the only other such song to have reigned: Peabo Bryson and Regina Belle’s Aladdin theme “A Whole New World,” which spent a week at No. 1 in 1993.

“We Don’t Talk About Bruno,” from Disney’s hit animated film Encanto, rules the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart for a fifth week. The song, by Carolina Gaitán, Mauro Castillo, Adassa, Rhenzy Feliz, Diane Guerrero, Stephanie Beatriz and the Encanto Cast (all singing as the characters that they voice in the movie), extends its mark for the most weeks at No. 1 on the Hot 100 ever for a hit from a Disney movie – and now claims more weeks on top than the other two leaders from Disney movies combined.

While I still have somewhat mixed feelings on the film, it has grown on me a bit. And I’m always happy to see a Disney animated musical perform well. They’re always better than their non-musical features.

I don't think WDTAB has had as much impact as LIG in the scheme of things, but it is a great song, so I'm happy for it. The comedy for me is that Miranda and Disney didn't have any confidence in it. I imagine the next animated film with a Miranda soundtrack is going to be dominated with songs like WDTAB (where a bunch of characters are talking at once). Prepare yourselves.

yeah, just like they made the Lopezes write two LIG's style songs for Elsa to sing solo for Frozen 2. Of course neither of those two songs ever became as popular as the first film's song. You just cant force these things to happen. :milkbuds:

I don’t think "Into the Unknown" or "Show Yourself" are anything like "LIG" other than Idina Menzel is singing them. "LIG" is actually a great deal like "Defying Gravity" as far as being an empowerment anthem; "Show Yourself" and "Into the Unknown" are nothing like "Defying Gravity" either, which makes it more obvious. I think that's more a case of people who don't like Frozen inventing something negative to say than it actually being true.

Moreover, I wasn't referring to Disney forcing Miranda to do anything, so much as Miranda making the choice to do it himself because he wants an Oscar. It would almost be funny if they go all in on another WDTAB-esque song for the Oscars next time only for the "I Want" song to be the better song that time.

I mean the two songs sound like female empowerment songs to me, and both solos are sung by Elsa by herself while she's using her powers. That makes them feel similar enough to me.
I'm not dissing the songs, they're my two favorite songs from Frozen 2.

You made me lol at the "prepare yourselves" line! You're funny! I didn't know Disney had no confidence in "WDTAB" and that's funny too because that was my favorite song in the film and to me, the only half good one.

Encanto songs keep on rising the charts...
“We Don’t Talk About Bruno,” from Encanto, pushes 4-2 on the Hot 100 as the week’s most-streamed and top-selling song. It becomes just the second song from a Disney animated film to have reached the chart’s top two positions. It trails only Peabo Bryson and Regina Belle’s “A Whole New World,” from Aladdin, a No. 1 for one week in March 1993.

Plus, fellow Encanto track “Surface Pressure” by Jessica Darrow hits the Hot 100’s top 10, jumping 14-10 and making the movie the first Disney animated film to have generated multiple top 10s on the chart.

(The Lion King previously came closest to the achievement: Elton John’s “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” roared to No. 4 and follow-up “Circle of Life” reached No. 18 in 1994.)

If radio stations would pick up ‘Bruno’ it has a shot at number 1. The streaming figures are enormous.

WDAS is really solidifying its position as the biggest animation studio in the game. This film is becoming a cultural phenomenon.

It’s far from my favorite but I’m happy for its success!

It's also very far from my favorite Disney songs... but... it finally happened!!

‘We Don’t Talk About Bruno,’ From ‘Encanto,’ Hits No. 1 on Billboard Hot 100

The soundtrack smash is the second Hot 100 leader ever from a Disney animated film, as well as the first for its writer and co-producer, Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Seven Encanto tracks, all written solely by Miranda and produced by Miranda and Elizondo, place on the Feb. 5 Hot 100, and all reach new highs:
No. 1, “We Don’t Talk About Bruno,” Carolina Gaitán, Mauro Castillo, Adassa, Rhenzy Feliz, Diane Guerrero, Stephanie Beatriz & Encanto Cast
No. 9, “Surface Pressure,” Jessica Darrow
No. 20, “The Family Madrigal,” Beatriz, Olga Merediz & Encanto Cast
No. 27, “What Else Can I Do?,” Guerrero & Beatriz
No. 36, “Dos Oruguitas,” Sebastián Yatra (up from No. 44, as the song, shortlisted for a best original song Oscar nomination, brings Yatra to the Hot 100’s top 40 in his first appearance on the chart)
No. 48, “Waiting On a Miracle,” Beatriz
No. 82, “All of You,” Beatriz, Merediz, John Leguizamo, Adassa, Maluma & Encanto Cast

Congrats to all involved in this. A huge hit. Makes you wonder how many weeks at #1 Let it go would have been with billboard’s current chart calculations that favor streaming more than it used to.

Surface Pressure at #9. I think it’s the better song so I’m happy it’s doing great as well.

I haven't seen Encanto yet, but so far I have heard two songs. The first one I don't remember, but it's possible it was the first song since the whole family is presented. Can't say it was my cup of tea.
The other song is Surface Pressure, which was pretty catchy.
