Not a remake- I will take it! I've heard of the musical and I think I've heard a song from it. The cast album might even be in my Amazon wishlist. Definitely interested in this one.

It's interesting that so long after Into the Woods, Disney is back in the business of adapting stage musicals with Once on This Island and now this one.

I'm very interested in seeing how they adapt this. The musical is excellent, one of my favorites, but a lot of the content doesn't seem very Disney. Sure Into the Woods has thematic elements that Disney lets stay, but they still took out Rapunzel's death. The adult elements in Spelling Bee are much more overt, with cursing and an entire song called "My Unfortunate Erection." Disney could surprise me and make a faithful adaptation, but I'm not really banking on it. Would be a disappointment if this was watered down to appeal to pre-teens. Also the casting should be interesting, as the entire hook of the musical cast is watching adults camp it up playing children. I wonder what they'll do about that.

If they're not able to tone down the content, I can see Disney releasing this under 20th Century.

If this were a 20th Century Studios project, the trades would have indicated so like they've done with other films being developed at 20th post-merger. Since this is only referred to as a Disney film, it makes me believe it's being produced by Disney Studios and will be Disney-branded.

Then again, it's not out of the realm of possibility for Disney to switch labels if they deem it necessary, just like them moving Disney+ shows to Hulu (Love, Victor and High Fidelity) and vice versa (Mysterious Benedict Society) and back when Disney films would become Touchstone releases (Dick Tracy, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Who Framed Roger Rabbit).
