Freaks and Geeks worth it?
I never watched the show but people keep telling me to buy the DVDs. You know how it goes, " it's great you'll love it blah blah". Is this series worth my earth monies?
Let's get digital!
Well, it's a question of taste, naturally. My copy isn't going to arrive until Monday. But from having seen the show, I think it's very good and it deserved more than what it got, which wasn't even an entire season on the air.
Furthermore, knowing the story of the show's makers trying to get it to DVD in spite of all those music clearance costs, it's one of those things that I'm encouraged to purchase on principle, too.
But in any event, it sounds to be a first-rate presentation that shows the same kind of love for the show that the creators put into it and the website they run for it.
What you might consider doing, having not seen the show, is buying the Preview disc from <a href="http://www.qksrv.net/click-1190473-9254939" target="_top" >ebay.com</a><img src="http://www.qksrv.net/image-1190473-9254939" width="1" height="1" border="0">. It has 3 episodes of the show and sells for like $10. Though I'd recommend the series anyway.
Hopefully its strong sales will encourage Fox to try and clear music for The Wonder Years season sets on DVD.

I have also been hearing a lot of praise for "Freaks and Geeks" and have been considdering buying it, even though I have never seen it. A lot of shows that I fall in love with get cancelled. Is this series a sitcom or a drama? And somebody told me that the DVD sold in stores isn't complete, and that there is a complete one available online. Does anybody have more info and hopefully a link?
I'm currently watching and reviewing every Disney film in chronological order. You can follow along at my blog, The Disney Films, and also follow me on Twitter.
The show is both a comedy and drama, and it is able to successfully weave back and forth between the two. The episodes are hour-long; about 45 minutes after commercials.
The one that is in stores and online contains all 18 episodes with 29 audio commentaries and some bonus features. It's 6 discs altogether and can be had for around $45-$50 online. It's $48.99 at <a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/ ... Amazon.com.
<img src="http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0001 ... UMBZZZ.jpg" border="0"></a>
Then there's an 8-disc set that has two additional discs of bonus features and comes with a high school yearbook type book. That is $120 + $5 shipping and only available at http://www.freaksandgeeks.com. Well and eBay, too. Even if the bonus discs and book sound very, very cool, it's more than double the price for just two bonus discs, and there are other shows I love more. So I went with the 6-disc set which sounds very, very cool, itself.

Wow! I am definatley buying "Freaks and Geeks" after reading this article. http://www.usatoday.com/life/columnist/ ... andy_x.htm It seems that the creator of F&G has directed some episodes of one of my favorite shows, "Arrested Development," which is about to have the same injustice done unto it the F&G had. I have been begging people on the forum to give it a chance, but a lot of people won't listen. It is a very smart and funny show, but takes some getting used to. Anyway, as soon as I have the extra money to burn, I will buy "Freaks and Geeks."

Re: Freaks and Geeks worth it?
It really depends upon when you were in high school. The show is set in 1981 -- a time that I was in high school. I relate to nearly EVERY character and song on the show. For me, it's a very cool trip down memory lane, and the 8-disc "Yearbook" edition is worth every penny that I paid for it! I just relived the first two episodes tonight -- EXCELLENT!Invader ZIM wrote:I never watched the show but people keep telling me to buy the DVDs. I highly recommend the 8 disc Yearbook Edition. I've had mine for a little over a week & have relived all 18 episodes & watched all of the bonus features except listening to the 29 feature commentaries. Best packaging for one of the best tv shows ever made. Cast is as close to perfect as you'll get and though I graduated hs in 72 I still see the exact same cliques that strolled the halls of my hs. They put their hearts & souls into the show & the dvd presentation. The yearbook is worth the price alone. After taking a little break I'll go back & listen to all of the 29 commentaries (don't want to burn out on everything in 2 weeks). I just wish I lived in LA because they are having a signing tomorrow with at least a dozen F&G cast members & I'd love to get it signed. There is talk of a NY autograph signing to come too but alas none in Florida. NBC really screwed up by changing nights & pulling it for sweeps so that you never knew if & when it was on. It could have been in its 5th season now but perhaps it was a blessing that it got just the one since eventually all shows jump the shark & end poorly. Only a few go out on top. This was like a great miniseries. It lends itself to many repeat viewings. ****

"Freaks and Geeks" is my favorite television show of all time! I received my yearbook edition three weeks ago yesterday, and it is without a doubt my fave box set ever. I have watched the episodes all the way through 6 times already. I love it so much, and I just can't get enough. I have listened to all 29 commentaires and watched all the special features, and they are all fantastic. This show is hard to describe because it sounds so much like countless other shows, but it is not. It is so unique. Every episode is great, and every castmember is awesome. I got my sisters, borhter-in-law, and parents all hooked over the Easter weekend, and my mom, who insisted when the show was on the air that she wouldn't like it watched the entire series in two days.
