I know. I wondered the same thing. The article says Reitman only had to get permissions from Norman Lear (who controls the rights, apparently?), the estate of William Goldman, and the composer of the original movie. And I guess Reiner as a courtesy?

Looking up the original film on Wikipedia, it says the movie was only distributed by Fox— the production companies are listed as Act III Communications (Lear), Buttercup Films, and The Princess Bride Ltd. So I guess it’s like how Disney got control of the Star Wars sequels after buying Lucasfilm, despite the movie series long being associated with and distributed by Fox?

I guess when Disney/Fox is exploring new ventures based on The Princess Bride, like the stage adaptation, they are still licensing the rights from Lear?

I know it’s for charity, but I can’t help thinking Katzenberg is loving a chance to stick it to his old rival again.

The original film is technically owned by MGM and they had a deal with Fox, allowing them rights to the film in North America. However, the MGM-Fox deal expired this month, so now others might get a deal with MGM, or the ones who own this film.

Edit:
Looked it up and the deal expires in June 30th. The rights are for distribution only, nothing about remakes and such, so Disney doesn't really have a say on the matter.

My mom was obsessed with this film when I was little, but I've only ever seen it in parts... Will Quibi have the whole thing in 10-or-less minute increments since that's their thing?

I've actually never seen the original film. It was on Netflix for a while and I started it but I found the movie too corny after 20 minutes in. I thought I'd like it more since I love Stardust and everybody said Stardust was a lot like The Princess Bride.

I’ve never like The Princess Bride, either. But I have a problem with... I guess “genre comedies” like this one and Mel Brooks movies, too. I guess I get confused as to when these movies are being sincere and when they’re taking the piss. Just not my cup of tea.

My best friend fell in love with The Princess Bride when she first saw it as a young adult, and then she showed it to me and yeah, it seemed corny, cheasy, cheap...I told her "the synthesized music is really bad!" But you know, it had a really nice ending, and knowing it's such a classic, I just can't help but hold the film in high eteem. Next time I see it, I think I will like it more. But I also would love a remake!

The Princess Bride is one of those movies that I've know about for my whole life. Loads of friends have told me to watch it because according to them I would probably really like it. However, while I have seen scenes and snippets, I have yet to sit down and properly watch it. It does seem like one of those nostalgic movies that probably never should be remake though. Not that that would stop Hollywood...
