"Blooper" Scene Deleted from "Toy Story 2"
The A.V. Club (via Vice Media) is reporting that in light of the "#MeToo" movement, a "blooper" scene was deleted from the recent home entertainment re-releases of "Toy Story 2."
It involves Stinky Pete suggestively saying to twin Barbie dolls that he could get them parts in "Toy Story 3."

Re: "Blooper" Scene Deleted from "Toy Story 2"
I think somebody posted about this in the TS4 thread. It's a dumb decision to me, but not the worst thing in the world--especially since renowned sexual harasser John Lasseter was a big part of making this film.

Well, I figured that since it did not have anything to do with TS4, it should have its own thread. Thanks for the heads-up, though.

Re: "Blooper" Scene Deleted from "Toy Story 2"
Are Disney and Pixar films living, breathing documents that should reflect the values of today’s society or are they historical artifacts that represent the mores of the culture in which the film was initially released? Clearly, Disney has embraced the first approach and as long as they continue to market these movies as “timeless” then they must play into the lie by making changes like this.

It was an amusing gag, but it's probably best it got cut. Times have changed and in this #metoo era, the casting couch is no longer a joking matter but an uncomfortable and toxic truth.
Considering it's a single bit from the end credit blooper reel [as opposed to cutting like, all the crow scenes completely from Dumbo] i don't see the problem with getting rid of it.

Point well taken and made. Since the offending scene was only in the end credits, not affecting the main body of the film (unlike the scenes cut from Dumbo), the cut is excusable and warranted.
Re: "Blooper" Scene Deleted from "Toy Story 2"
It was a harmless joke, they should've kept it in. If you want to keep that kind of thing out of newer movies, fine, but keep the classics as they were, and yes I include credit sequences in with that.

I think if movies are timeless they are classics that should be kept with the sense of zeitgeist they originally had. I agree with Kyle.

And this is what I like about message boards like this one: it gives us a place to discuss things in a (hopefully) civilized manner. There are times when things get out of control, but it rarely happens here.

I also oppose the removal of the scene. This was not some bonus feature on the DVD. It was during the end credits and the end credits are part of the film. I'm against all forms of censorship and particularly when it comes to art.

Also I am glad Sotiris agrees, too.

Oh for goodness sake ! How ridiculous, just leave things as they are. I wonder who was the person to suggest "oooo we need to take this out ASAP" ?

Re: "Blooper" Scene Deleted from "Toy Story 2"
I recall that Tom & Jerry DVDs have a disclaimer that the cartoons have controversial subjects that were a product of their time but the DVD will not be censoring anything because Warner Bros., while not supportive of racism today, does not want to hide that they had problematic content/attitudes back then.
Maybe Pixar should put a disclaimer in front of Toy Story 2: "This movie has a blooper that some people may find sexist. Viewer discretion is advised."

Or at the very least, have the option to watch the film with the unedited blooper reel via seamless branching.
Re: "Blooper" Scene Deleted from "Toy Story 2"
Good idea. There's no need for something of so little importance to the story to be kept in out of honesty and I feel that there is an obligation to denounce Lasseter's alleged behaviour

Re: "Blooper" Scene Deleted from "Toy Story 2"
The omission may have bothered me more if it weren't for the fact that Pixar itself was directly denounced because of Lasseter's actions. Pixar is lucky that it's emerged relatively unscathed so this is the least it could do.

Re: "Blooper" Scene Deleted from "Toy Story 2"
This is what I thought, too. While I don’t like changes to pre-existing films, something so minor doesn’t really bother me especially considering Lasseter’s own behavior. And I’m not sure I’d call it censorship exactly when Disney is doing it to their own products. Censorship to me would be if an outside source like the government, or a school, or a TV channel edited the film.Rose Dome wrote:Good idea. Re: "Blooper" Scene Deleted from "Toy Story 2"
I'm normally not a fan of this kind of self-censorship- I think it's for the best for this kind of questionable material to be left in tact not just to keep the work as originally intended in tact, but also to show the artists involved's intent at the time, even if it means said artist in question will be caught with their pants down. But at the same time, I can understand why cutting this joke would be a good idea for the time being, and it's not like we're losing anything of value by cutting an end credits gag. If this is only a temporary cut, and it returns to future releases, that could work.
Re: "Blooper" Scene Deleted from "Toy Story 2"
They only brought attention to this scene by removing it, otherwise I don't think anyone realized or cared enough about it.
Honestly I find the censoring in Aladdin and the mistake in Beauty and the Beast to be far more damaging to their films than this. However I never liked these fake bloopers and I've never been a huge fan of Toy Story to begin with.

Re: "Blooper" Scene Deleted from "Toy Story 2"
Do you mean the change in the opening line of Arabian Nights? Because that "censorship" existed from the moment the film was released in theaters so I don't even consider it as such. It's no different from some lines in Savages being changed in Pocahontas although people don't bring that up as much.farerb wrote:They only brought attention to this scene by removing it, otherwise I don't think anyone realized or cared enough about it.

For one of their crown jewels, you would think Disney would be a bit more reverent of BATB but that's clearly not the case.
