Coco 2

Post by Sotiris »

The directors and producer talk about the possibility of a sequel to Coco.
Will there be a Coco sequel? Darla said right now all she is thinking about is this film and they are super focused and no where beyond that right now. She said they havenโ€™t really given it a thought. Lee added that it would really depend on how the movie goes and if people are looking for another story because they donโ€™t want to leave that world. At the end of the day this is a story and if there is another story to be told they will, but they try to make the films stand alone.

Will there be a sequel to Coco? I know many are already wondering, so here is what Lee, Adrian, and Darla had to say. They shared that sequels are created when the fans are connected with the characters and donโ€™t want to leave the world they live in, but in the end, it just depends if there is another story to be told afterward.

I honestly hope not. There isn't really another story to share afterwards and this movie is just too good for another sequel.

But, I would love a prequel with Ernesto, Hector, and Imelda. THAT is a story that needs to be told.

I guess this means no sequel for Coco.

That's not a bad thing.

The original wrapped things up beautifully. So Iโ€™m happy to hear it will stay that way.

Agreed. I know we're talking about Disney / PIXAR here, but not every film needs to become an entire franchise!

I'm sure they said this for Toy Story as well after the third film came out. I wouldn't put it past Pixar to make a sequel for Coco even if it won't be for a decade or so.

I could kind of see a sequel with Miguel being a teenager or where Miguel is very old/near death. The only thing I don't get is how the sequel could be called Coco 2.... (Unless, if you go with the old Miguel idea, one of his descendants is named after Coco--maybe even his daughter?)

Anthony Gonzalez, who voiced young guitar-strummer Miguel in the film, shared his hopes that the story of โ€œCocoโ€ will continue on now that Miguel can openly embrace his musical proclivities โ€” whether that be a stage show, a live-action adaptation, or a sequel.

โ€œIf there was a chance, I would love to. I hope thereโ€™s a sequel even if Iโ€™m not in it. Iโ€™d just love to see more about Miguel โ€” what heโ€™s up to, what heโ€™s doing. I want to know about his relationship with his new baby sister,โ€ Gonzalez said.

But the world of the dead is a big thing of the first film, I can't see a sequel to this without developing that further.

I suppose if Miguel is a teen/young adult, the movie in part could be set at a time when his grandmother dies and reunites with Coco in the afterlife?

Coco 2 reunites the team behind the original film, including director Lee Unkrich (Coco, Toy Story 3) and co-director Adrian Molina (Coco). Oscar-winning producer Mark Nielsen (Toy Story 4, Inside Out 2) will produce.

Isn't it odd that Lee Unkrich is directing the sequel when he was supposed to have retired? I wonder if the Lopezes or any other members of the songwriting team will be coming back too.

Interestingly, Disney initially posted on social media that the film will be released in 2029, but later removed the release year.

PLEASE! out of all Pixar movies, this one is the most obvious one to come. The Box office numbers said it all

From the D23 Expo. They revealed an aged-up Miguel and the return of the villain. Older Miguel looks off to me.

Wow! It looks bad! :D not only does Ernesto come back to get revenge which gives mayor Cheapquel vibes, but Miguel looks so out of character. I get they aged him up a bit but his haircut doesnt match his persona at all, makes him look too try hard or pretentious. A wavy curtain hairstyle would have helped make him look a bit older and still in Character. Hoped they would have aged him up to like 16 or 20 or smth so his og voice actor could still voice him. So far it looks like the story is too close to the first. Maybe a bit too graphic for the mouse empire, but i would have welcomed if Miguels new sister would get terribly ill (cancer idk) and shes about to die like half in the movie, and the parents cant comprehend it, and Miguel would be like their emotional guide assuring them she is not gone as he knows from the other side. Would be a contrast to Mama Coco dying, as there is a different feeling if an elderly person dies compared to a young child, which seems more tragic and unfair. Sounds a bit too much but atleast its something more original ig.

I agree. His hairstyle looks too modern and out of character. Also, his face looks too round and his body too tall and lanky. A round face looks good on a kid; not so much on a teenage character.

Yeah. This is definitely Miguel's awkward rebellion phase. (If they're aging him up, do we know if they're bringing back the original voice actor?)

Bringing back Ernesto feels sloppy narratively, but I'll concede I had no idea whether or not they could have ever actually "killed" him in the first movie given that ... they're already dead.

Him seeing Mama Coco again, though
