20,000 Leagues DVD

Post by mitch_evers »

Hello I'm new to Ultimate Disney, this is my first post, how do you do.

Just wondered if anybody else had any trouble with the '20,000 Leagues Under the Sea' DVD. I've tried three copies and each one plays only half the movie before the picture starts breaking up. Here in region 2 world the movie is released tomorrow but is so cheap (roughly a tenner on the net) I expect it is only one disc. I am really tempted to try another region 1 copy if only for the magnificent extras.

I know doing the multi-region thing is frowned upon, but if Disney had half way decent Region 2 releases I wouldn't need to!

Yours frustratedly,

Mike.

That's a bummer, Mike - I haven't had any trouble at all but I'm firmly in Region 1. Seems to me like that might be your leading candidate, what are the odds that 3 consecutive copies would be bad, huh?

Don't let the cheap price fool you though - might be cheap to push initial sales, they do that over here too. Instead of getting cheaper later, it's the opposite - they get more expensive later in some cases, especially Disney DVDs, the only time they get cheaper again is when it's an older edition that's about to have a Special/Platinum edition come out like "Alice" last year. Good luck!!

No the UK is single disc, and does contain some of the supplements, but nothing like all of them:
Jules Verne & Walt Disney: Explorers Of The Imagination
Monsters Of The Deep
The Humbolt Squid: A Real Sea Monster
Lost Treasures: The Sunset Squid
Tour of the Nautilus
Most of the other vault/special edition titles are single disc with no supplements - even the Witch Mountain films which were single discs in America.
Most of my Blu-ray collection some of my UK discs aren't on their database

Hey Mitch, welcome to the forum!

Sorry to hear about those problems. I'd have to agree with ohmahaaha that it's probably a player incompatibility issue. A number of Disney discs have caused conflicts for various different players. Though something like this would appear to be widespread depending on what kind of player you have, I haven't heard of any other complaints. Still 3 bad copies in a row just seems highly unlikely.

Have you tried like going to a future chapter ahead of where it breaks up and seeing if it plays well again? That'd be an annoyance, for sure, but you wouldn't be missing out on the extras disc.

I don't have this DVD, so I can't offer much help, but I would like to say welcome aboard :D.

My 20,000 Leagues works fine on my player, but I wouldn't be surprised if it is a incompatibility problem.

I have had so many discs not work properly due to incompatibility problems (in fact, with Beauty and Beast I went through 2 local copies, and the R1 copy with the exact same problem before getting a new player, sans problems. The R1 New Groove had issues, as did the local Atlantis). Disney are notorious when it comes to crook discs.

i imported the region 1 disc to play on a region 2 player which had been hacked and it works fine.
Is your dvd player a good quality one? because on the back on the dvd case there is a warning that says some dvd players may not be able to play some of the features?

although perhaps you just keep getting discs from a faulty batch!

Thanks for all your advice. I think it probably is my player as it seems incredibly sensative to certain discs. The only other R1 disc that I've had real problems with is 'Mickey Mouse in Black and White' my two copies of which have refused to play 'Mickey's Gala Premier'. 'Davy Crockett' was also a bit glitchy on one episode.

Its a shame because the Disney release schedule here in the UK is so unpredictable. It is improving with a lot of back catalouge titles being released here over the coming weeks. Still, the choices seem strange. A virtualy unknown film such as 'The Castaway Cowboy' is due to be released soon, yet a title as popular the original 'Parent Trap' has never been available in the UK save a very limited rental release in 1987!

To make matters worse, these releases have no publicity. I work in a high street DVD retail chain and we are not even stocking '20,000 Leagues'. I'm sure the majority of the public is unaware that it is even available on DVD. I think Disney really under estimate the popularity of their films in this country.

My player is a Hitachi DV-P305. I've had it for about 4 years which I guess in DVD terms makes it fairly old. Wanting to play other region dvds wasn't really an issue when I bought it. It was only when Disney began releasing the 'Treasures' series, and the chance of them releasing them in the UK seemed slim, that I decide to hack my machine.

My experience with '20,000 Leagues' did put me off of buying any more of the 'Vault' titles, especially after reading the 'may not play on all machines' blurb on the back. That said, I have just gone ahead and purchased a R1 'Parent Trap' which I hope will play okay.

If nobody else has had any problems then I guess it must either be incompatable with my machine or a disc from a bad batch.

Once again, thanks for all your suggestions,

Mike.

Mitch,

I bought a great JVC XA-602 code-free progressive scan player from this webiste last year: http://www.220-electronics.com

It's able to transfer from PAL-NTSC flawlessly with an internal multisystem converter and the quality is great. It plays back from any region coded source DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, VCD, SVCD, CD, CD-R/W, MP3, MPEG CD, Etc...

It's got great resolution and comes with full lifetime warranty and technical support.

If you're experiencing compatibility problems, you might want to check out what 220-electronics has to offer. From my experience, they've got the best overall prices on high-end products and are extremely reliable!

I've never had a single compatibility issue on any DVD to date with the exception of a bootleg concert video that I bought off Ebay and most probably wasn't properly recorded/mastered.

Anyways, you might want to check it out.

Good luck.

Hi StashOne!

No offence but multi-region players are a dime a dozen over here; check out Amazon.co.uk's listings! Multi-region players, from cheap asian imports to modded or straight-out-of-the-box players from repuatable companies. I can't recommend anyone from the UK importing a player from America.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000DC3MW/ (£29.99 - cheap!)
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000X5LII/
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000AM9G5/
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000094SBX/
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000095S3V/
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000ZGZGI/

and that's just a handful!

Personally I'd recommend a Pioneer player. We've had no incompatible discs at all, and it's also good at playing scratched discs.

Wow, those are amazing prices!

Do you need a converter in order to playback NTSC formatted discs on your tv's though?

Not to rain on your parade here, but generally speaking the lower-end units such as Malatas, Akai, Daewoo, etc don't offer the same quality playback performance as say the JVC, Philips, Sony, etc.

I've heard of many issues from people with these region-free players.

If Mitch is even considering going this route, I'd strongly suggest he shell out the extra dough, especially if he's working with a home theatre set-up and quality is a factor...

Well, it depends. Most modern TVs in the UK (certainly those with the required connections to get the best out of a DVD player) are multi-format. I would say 90%+ of all TV's sold in the UK in the last 10 years can play PAL, PAL-60 and NTSC without any problems.

Some DVD players over here can convert output formats though if this is needed. You just need to shop around (there's about 80 multi-region players listed on Amazon.co.uk alone)

I wasn't suggesting it was cheap, but when I was researching code-free players before deciding upon purchasing my unit I had read tons of reviews and spoken to over a dozen people concerning which player to go with and generally, those with HDTV or home theatre set-ups have had some issues with the Malata's and Akai's, etc. On a smaller set the playback might not be as noticeable but if quality is a big issue than I have to recommend the "higher end" hacked players as opposed to those which are produced specifically for region-free encoding. I'm sure your player's great though!
