Hey guys,
I asked in this forum a while back about official Disney instrumental CDs. The only ones I knew of were The Lion King and Pocahontas, which had (seemingly rare now) releases with proper instrumental versions of some songs, not "karaoke" remakes.
Recently I've had I'll Make a Man Out of You stuck in my head, and thought I'd see if an instrumental was out there.
I came across this:

There are a couple other videos on YouTube with that same exact audio. It sounds like the proper, original instruments from the song, but with some sort of low woodwind instrument (really, it sounds MIDI-like) playing what would have been the singer.
Does anyone know where that would have come from? I've been searching around, and I don't see even the "Disney Karaoke" series released for Mulan. Reflection is on some Disney Princess Karaoke CD, but that's obviously not what I'm looking for.
I tried remaking it from the DVD, since for some movies it was easy enough - on the 5.1 track, you can usually simply mute the center channel, which has the vocals. But for Mulan, it seems the movie was mixed differently than the earlier ones, and the center track has a lot of instrumentation too, not just the vocals. Muting it leaves the song sounding horrible. I tried the Spanish and French tracks too, which are mixed exactly the same - both from the 2000 "Limited Issue" DVD and the "Special Edition" that had two discs. The Blu-ray also has a 5.1 (rather than 7.1 upmixed as some other movies do) so I assume it's the same.
Any ideas where else an instrumental of the song could have come from? Or is that just a really really good remake?
Edit: The "Music" featurette on disc 2 of the special edition has an instrumental of the song with the filmmakers talking over it. Darn it Disney, stop taunting me! I know you have one!

I have the complete Mulan score, if you're interested. It has several instrumental versions of the songs.

Heck yeah I'm interested.
What's your source on those?
The Beauty and the Beast "complete score" I found and downloaded sounds super bootleggish and fanmade, probably by muting the center channel like I mentioned.

Re: Mulan Instrumentals?
OK, so I talked to somebody outside this site and got some answers.
I'm almost 100% positive the audio used in that video I linked is from "Disney Karaoke, Volume 3" from 2001. He said it even has that horn track playing the singer's part, like in the video.
Not sure why that didn't come up when googling "disney karaoke" and mulan in the same search, but whatever. It seems to be on there.
Now, as far as that "complete score" goes... I downloaded the Beauty and the Beast one a couple years back, and some of it was good, other parts sounded entirely fan-made. Like they muted the center channel from the 5.1 track as I described.
I did manage to find a Mulan complete score on another site I shall not name here. But it makes me question its authenticy, it's likely a bootleg/fan-made like the BatB one.
The official OST has a catalog number listed as "60631-7" which checks out. But the complete score does not. There's also a "For your consideration" Academy sampler, that one is likely legit though.
I ran into this same issue looking for the score to Michael Bay's Transformers movie. We got a 20-track CD released here, but it was in no means "complete", it was seriously lacking and had under an hour of movie for a 2.5 hour movie. And to boot, it was severely under-produced and people were selling second-hand copies for $75 or more.
I had seen some floating around on eBay labeled as "expanded score" and even "complete score". So out of curiosity I bought one of each. Ripped the CDs and you can tell they were made from lossy mp3 files - not sure where or how the people who made the CDs got those tracks from, but they had bootleg written all over them. One of them even had severely pixelated artwork, which was amusing.
So the fact it was on a CD at some point doesn't mean it was ever actually released by Disney or anyone else. Could just be some guy in his basement burning CD-Rs and someone else buys one, rips it, and now there's a copy going around the 'net.
I might check it out anyway, to see if the quality is any good. But I don't see any track titles that would indicate they're the backing music to I'll Make a Man Out of You.

The Beauty and the Beast score I have is sourced from the Blu-ray, and it sounds great. I worked on some of them, that didn't sound so good. Right now, I'm working on The Hunchback of Notre-Dame.drfsupercenter wrote:Heck yeah I'm interested.

Yes, I do, along with The Little Mermaid, Snow White and Roger Rabbit.DisneyFan09 wrote:Didn't you have the compelte Beauty and the Beast score as well?Sicoe Vlad wrote:I have the complete Mulan score, if you're interested. It has several instrumental versions of the songs.
Hey Marcey, it's not an official soundtrack, but it sounds pretty good, since it's sourced from the Blu-ray of the movie. I found the song instrumentals online, and I worked on some of the score bits myself. Long and hard work, but it was worth it.Marce82 wrote:Hey Teppy!

So, if anyone wants any of these scores, please PM me, and I will send them via WeTransfer. Be sure to mention which ones you want, and I will take care of the rest.

The thing is that for some reason my PM-account on this board has been locked and the administrators has done nothing about it. But I guess it's not allowed to cite e-mail adresses around here?Sicoe Vlad wrote:So, if anyone wants any of these scores, please PM me, and I will send them via WeTransfer. You need to contact Luke, the administrator, and have him enable it for you. You can reach him via email at tsdvd@yahoo.com or on Facebook or Twitter.DisneyFan09 wrote:The thing is that for some reason my PM-account on this board has been locked and the administrators has done nothing about it.
You can post your email address here if you want, there's no rule against it. It's just not very safe doing so on a public forum. Someone could use your email to send spam or malware etc. It's up to you though.DisneyFan09 wrote:But I guess it's not allowed to cite e-mail addresses around here?

I've written to him through that e-mail address, but he's never responded. But I could always give it another shot.Sotiris wrote:You need to contact Luke, the administrator, and have him enable it for you. You can reach him via email at tsdvd@yahoo.com or on Facebook or Twitter.
Oh, I could? OK. But I could always edit the post and delete it afterwardsSotiris wrote:You can post your email address here if you want, there's no rule against it. It's just not very safe doing so on a public forum. Someone could use your email to send spam or malware etc. It's up to you though.
So Sicoe Vlad, could you send the instrumentals to my e-mail address?
