Q: After The Good Dinosaur, what else does Pixar have in the pipeline?

Jim Morris: We have a bunch of confirmed titles. There’s Finding Dory later this year. We’re working on The Incredibles 2, Cars 3 and Toy Story 4. Dan Scanlon, who did Monsters University is working on an original film.

Scanlon's movie is tentatively called "The Untitled Pixar Film That Takes You to a Suburban Fantasy World". Why can't Pixar just give their projects real working titles instead of doing this long-winded mess?

then again I also was excited about Good Dinosaur b/c I love prehistoric creatures and, well I wasnt all that crazy about how that film turned out.

Maybe there will be a return to the land of the dead as in Coco, but only a short visit rather than a whole movie (and obvious a very different version of it).

It does make me think of Steven Spielberg's A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001). But that's assuming the brothers end up doing what they have set out to do.

I doubt it'll have anything to do with Coco. Both are two very different mythologies which won't mix. The film sounds intriguing though.

Oh sorry, I misread your post and thought you were saying that the film would feature the world of the dead from Coco. I definitely can see what you really meant though.

When the project was announced at the last D23 Expo, I also thought it had some similarities with Coco (which of course hadn't yet premiered by then, but we already knew some details about the story). But I think in this film the two brothers will probably bring their father back from the dead by casting some magic spell instead of going to a land of the dead. The magical world where the film is set also reminded me of Prince Caspian, the second Narnia book/movie. There there's also a fantasy world whose inhabitants have forgotten about magic. But it's still an original and interesting concept. I'm really looking forward to this movie and I hope it won't get cancelled like Gigantic.

According to Scanlon, this is a modern fantasy world where, once upon a time, there was real magic. But learning magic is hard and, eventually, technological innovation became easier. Soon magic was replaced almost entirely with modern technology. Concept art showed a mystical, face-having tree looming over a parking lot full of ordinary looking sedans. There are no humans in this world; the residents are elves, trolls, and sprites. Scanlon joked that unicorns are so rampant they’re “practically rodents” as he flashed concept art of cute horned horses digging through an over-turned trash bin. Based on Scanlon’s own childhood dream to connect with a father who died before they could make any memories together, this new Pixar film promises all the imagination and emotional gut punches we’ve come to expect from the studio.

"The story is based on a very personal story of mine," Scanlon began. He then went on to tell the story of how he was only a year old when his father died. His older brother was only three. While they watched home movies of him and saw photographs, they had never heard him speak. When the boys were teenagers a relative came forward with an audio recording of their father. Scanlon played the recording to the sea of people, who sat in rapt attention. You can only hear his father say two words: "Hi" and "bye." In true Pixar fashion, they had found the absolutely quickest and most effective way to get people to tear up.

"I have always wondered who my father was," Scanlon said. "And that question became the blueprint for this movie."

The filmmaker then went on to detail the project: it takes place in a fantasy world but, he was quick to point out, a "modern fantasy world." The premise is, as Scanlon put it, magic was "hard to do and complicated to learn and eventually they created machines that did everything magic could do." He went on to describe the world, which is a combination of "the fantastic and everyday" – mushroom houses have satellite dishes sticking out of them, etc. There are no human characters, they're all fantastical creatures ("anything that would be painted on the side of a van in the '70s" Scanlon joked). Also, unicorns are everywhere. They flashed an image of unicorns that had tipped over a trashcan, like glittery raccoons.

The logo is quite similar to that of Pocahontas. Does "Onward" have a Native-American aspect to it? It didn't seem so from the info revealed at the D23 Expo.

I can see that. I think it's a mix of Pocahontas and Frozen's logos.
